All my turkey hunting, only about 8 years, life I've heard how a tom can pinpoint a call so well that he'd come from 2 miles to the exact place the call was coming from even if you dug a hole 20 feet deep and got down in it to call.
Here's my question. How come they go to the decoy instead of the call? I place my dekes about 20 yards out and they always concentrate on them, not the call.

They can pinpoint an area. Moreover... turkeys (real ones) don't stand still for half an hour while a gobbler moseys over from where ever he was. So he goes to the area he knows the bird was.... and he sees the decoys... Once he has seen it, he knows exactly where it is.... wouldn't you do the same thing if you were looking for someone?

According to Ben Lee they can pinpoint sound. Iheard this fromlistening to one of his tapes.I disagree withhim though. I think once the bird sees the deeke all his focus is on it, unless of course something dramatic happens.

with decoys out they will focus on it thinking the hen moved or something id imagine...ive had turkeys pinpoint my calls and look directly at me...
once i had a jake look right at my face for about a minute..i swear it was because i was using a mouth call.
last week i had a hen come in...after i moved 20yds...she looked at the tree i was sitting at for a couple minutes....
dad fell asleep after calling off and on one mid morning...he woke up to a gobbler about to step on his boot looking right at him...i got to witness it all as i was awake and 30-40yds away lol....dad screamed...bird flew...end of the hunt lol...
they seem to pinpoint well at times...others they come into the area just looking it seems...

you aint kiddin! lol...i tease dad about it all the time. we were 30-40 yds apart on a point both calling off and on trying to catch one coming back mid morning....dad always worked alot and most likely worked 3-11 the night before and got up at 3am to drive me up there...couldnt blame him for napping...and the warm spring sun puts me to sleep like a baby still...i noticed he quit calling...i was 14 or maybe 15...i was allowed to call but only when he told me i could and what calls to make(i was in "training" lol) im sitting there enjoying the spring woods and pretty comfy in a old blowdown and about to nap myself when i hear dad scream "AHHHH!!!" i look up and theres a longbeard honestly inches from his boots. i see the gun come up bird starts running...heard the saftey click off but it was flying but then...dad never fired. he said he woke up and the bird was inches from his face head bobbing like they do back and forth....i recokon that would make most anyone scream....but i still tease him about "that one time he fell asleep and a turkey scared him so bad he screamed like a little girl"
it was pretty priceless...we laughed the whole 2 mile hike back to the truck and hour and a half ride home...
