Just as it is getting dark with an owl hoot for me and I don't like to owl hoot in the morning because they will often not shut up from the roost and that will attract other hunters.

Every year I promise myself that I will but after getting up at 4:00am, traveling to the farm, hitting the field an hour beforesunrise, hiking and hunting hard all day,I always run out of energy. By roosting time I'm already asleep!

I usually get into a known roosting area way before roost time about 2 hours early... That way there is no chance of spooking the birds... Then I just pick a spot about 75 yards away and just sit tight and lisen... I stay in woods until just before dark and then I owl and check to see were the Gobblers are... It's sucks having to walk a 1/2 mile out of the woods in the dark...

guys, from your experience, do birds sometimes roost close to the roads. i was hunting in maryland this weekend, and i got out of my car was walking into the woods and a damn bird was in a tree about 20 yards inside the wood edge. when she saw me she jumped down and flapped her wings. I have never seen a roosted bird (only 2nd year) so im not sure if they would be that close to the road, but i dont see what else it could be lol. a turkey in the tree is a turkey in the tree. if so, will she always roost there? she was by herself (or at least i didnt see any others). so i walked in the woods about 50 yards, set up, and then saw a hen. i heard some gobblers farther in the woods, but couldnt get them to come.
