"roosting" birds
 

who roosts turkeys the night before??? what time of the evening/night do you go about doing it??? does it help success?? how is it done?? my thoughts were always go out and do a fly up and sneak out of there when they goto sleep...

but i dont know...how do you guys do it? what series of call do you use?? fly up with a hat like i do for a fly down?? is it worth the time and effort or no?? thanx guys

When I go out and roost birds, I get to a location where I cant be seen but heard. I keep my distance from the roost trees. I will use my mouth call and yelp and cutt real loud. This has always worked for me. Fly up times depend on the weather. Clear out means they will go to roost a bit later. Cloudy and they can go to roost earlier.

I to,keep some distancefrom known roost trees, but i listen only, unless i owl hoot to try and get one to sound off which it seems like only works 20% of the time :DThis season i had the birds pattern down to a nat's but [8D]I knew exactly where they were roosting and exactly where they flew down (from 100 yards in the woods over water and pitching down into the fields) knowing this gave me 1000 yard walk instead of a couple hundred yards, the easy way in. They were roosting next to a lane that cuts through the woods for field access, so i did not dare try and sneak in under and beside thee roost. I usually go in 1 hr. before sunset and wait em out to listen and have an alt. escape route planed just in case. In my opinion, yes it helps sucess. Its comforting knowing exactly where they are in case they are silent that morning, and i know i just to have patience versus moving.

I try to roost in the evening whenever possible in the A.M. I know I will be on birds for sure.In the P.M. I will watch birds with binos until they flyup.I will listen for birds yelping and or gobbling at flyup time.I also try to shock Gobble them.When I know they are roosted I will try and sneak in and figure out what tree they are in amd formulate a plan for the A.M.I will always lokk at my watch and determine when flyup and flydown time is.

i have most luck at sunset with an owl call. Couple hoots the "laugh" real loud then hoot again, they can't resist.

crow calls work great.really loud and birds from far away will answer at roosting time.ive had 'real' owls come in and hoot and had nothing happen then a few minutes later tried the crow call and the hills echoed with gobbles.great locator call.

At sunset, I have used a box call and just yelped really loud. Once I get one gobble that I stop and "mark" the position it came from. Next mourning, go out and get as close as possible...just don't spook them. I noramlly try to get out there about an hour before first light.

Im in wisconsin,and i find that early morning an owl hoot works great,sunset to dark a peacock call doing the piliated woodpecker cadence makes em talk when nothing else will.

i usually roost them the evening before.....i get there fairly early, at least 2-3 hours, i sit and i watch .....i do this prior to season as well, then the next morning i will try to get me a location on them, after awhile, i can get some kind idea of all of the roosting areas they like...during the hunts, i basically do the same, the night before i see them go in, i know where approximately where they will be if they don't gobble.......i haven't been able to get a gobble out of an evening bird but maybe one time, not from the lack of trying...they just dont like gobblin in the evening for me i guess, lol.....maybe thats why i spend so much time in the woods, if i could go in , hear a gobble that evening, i'd be set.....but that never happens to me....
