I was thinking mabey 200-300 yards is ok?? thanks for the tip.

Just don't get too close...you don't want to take a chance spooking them. I would go the extra distance to make sure I didn't spook them.

I like to scout from a Good distance 300-400yds away with the truck should be alright.
Get out andwalk a little,Take along your binoc's,But if you know the bird's are in there walkin early before roosting and sit down and listen.
Then the next day use the binoc's to locate them on the Roost.
As long as you keep a good distance,You should not have a problem with spooking them.
I wish you Luck

Better a 100 yds to far than one foot too close!

It's a little different in every situation, but I like to play it safe and be a little further than may be needed.

I like to park and walk the logging trails or roads to scout for Tracks, Feathers and Droppings. When I find heavy activity in one direction, that's the direction I try to find their roosting area.

Sometimes you will find feathers under trees, but check to see if the droppings are fairly fresh, if not keep on scouting walking in a quiet, but moderate pace. I always carry Binoc's with me in case I hear them at a distanceand I don't want to proceed any more in their direction and spook them. That's when I start using the Binoc's.

If you hear this real close and have not been spotted, do not proceed any further, you have located them.

FLY DOWN CACKLE
The cackle is generally associated with movement. It can be heard when a bird is flying up or down from a roost, flying off a ridge, or flying across a creek. A cackle usually consist of three to 10 irregularly spaced notes. It's a movement call, so use it sparingly.
