Guys I have a question, how do you age your birds? Is there any sure way to know or do you just have to take into account the size weight, spur length, and terrain in which he was shot, and make an educated guess?

only way to guess age is spur legnth.
bumps are a jake(1st season bird)
1/2-3/4 is a 2yo
1+is a 3yo
higher than 1.5 or so it gets tricky..
thats how i usually go...some guys say 1inchers are 2yo..i dont think so. atleast not in PA from what i have seen....i can almost tell by how they act sometimes..

where i hunt its pretty close to what mauser said
jakes have bumps
2 year olds have 3/4
3 year olds have 1 inch to 1 1/4
anything older its hard there spurs start to curl.

Thanks. I was just wonderin because two years ago I shota nice bird and later guessed his age at around 3 or 4 years. He had 1 inch spurs. He had a 10" beard that was pretty frayed at the end, and he wieghed 22#s. His fan was also pretty beat up. Would you guys guess hes around 3-4 years of age? I had always been told that northern birds had shorter spurs than southern birds because they were always wearing them down on rocks and what not. Is this true?
Im headin out toa new areathis weekend. Hopefully I can put one down or at least hear some gobblin. Its been a pretty slow year for me so far.

bowhunter...probably a 3yo. beard legnth really means nothing when if comes to aging birds. they wear and break off and rot etc...
spurs DO wear and break off...but your in the same state i am. our birds dont wear much from what ive seen. usually REALLY rocky places like out west etc i believe will have wear from the rocks etc...but not PA...atleast that ive seen and ive seen a good pile of birds.
good luck gettin another one...i didnt buy a second tag..my spring hunting time is limited after the first 2 weeks...wanted to take a buddy tomarrow but im beat. 45hrs of landscape labor this week...its rough! lol...he will still most likely hunt alone...i was just going to play guide..maybe next saturday i'll get out 1 last time with him...

Your score is 15.5 + 7.5 + 7.5 + 16.75 = 47.25
Setup under the roost, actually kicked a tom off a tree. 3 hens still in tree when this bugger flew down, strutted around for a while came around 45-50 yards out...3.5" Supreme did the job. Really light bird at 15.5lbs...one more tag left.

well guys I didnt get a chance to put a bird down, but I did have a great time listenin to one gobble!
The only problem was that the area I had permission to hunt was an extreamly thick 1 acre area surrounded by posted land.It was 6:00 whenwe got set up, and the bird was already on the ground. I sat and called but he never came my way. Instead, he quite gobblin for about 1/2 hour and by the time he gobbled again, he was about 100 yards farther out. He hung around out there for about an hour untill he moved off out of hearing distance. Since all the other land was posted, there was no way I could go after him.
He wasnt exactly answering my calls, but seemed to gobble at random. My guess is that he either wasnt very hot or he was on his way to a struting area or cornfield. Unfortunatly,Im not gonna have a chance to get back there before the season ends, so Ill have to realy onmy other turkey locations that havnt been doing so well to produce something this week.
