Default ? ON ROOSTING

A couple of years ago a friend told me that he had roosted birds in the evening on top of a ridge.A storm came through during the night and in the morning the birds were roosted down lower in the valley.I have never seen this myself. Will turkeys switch trees during the night?

Ive bumped roosting bird's lot's of times, and they have no qualms about flying at night.Kind of makes you wonder how they see to land, and how many get messed up trying to re-roost in pitch dark.Im guessing the birds that you speak of moved because of something that spooked them, like mabey falling limb's.

Two weeks ago while bowhunting I had an entire rafter of turkeys fly up at dark. Went back the next morning(in the dark) and they had moved about 200 yards or so. Clear night, no inclement weather- for reason unbeknownst to me- they moved.

>>>> My experience is that it takes some sort of "event" to make birds move after dark. I often "spook" hens off the roost in order to have the gobbler to myself the next morning. They'll pick up and move if they are scared enough......

Turkeys can do just about anything they choose to. I have seen birds fly up just at dark from deer stands and listened to them move from tree to tree after it was dark. They seem to be just about like a dog turning in cirlcles trying to get situated, trying to find that perfect limb to roost on. I have also bumped more birds between me and the gobbling bird I was headed to than I care to recall, mostly back in the timber. They had no choice but to land in another tree in the dark. It stands to reason that if a bird started high on a ridge and the wind picked up drastically, he would likely choose to move down off the ridge even if it were dark. I would think this might be the perfect set up since the birds may have become disoriented from the other birds exact locations.
