Default Mouth Reed Call

My mother gave me a DVD with a free mouth reed included with it. Haha, what a gift for christmas! So I watched it and I was impressed that I got sound. My problem is, I wonder whether or not the reed is defective or if its just me? I tried it, and when it makes sound, it sounds like a new years eve noise maker! It does'nt have that turkey characteristic. Does anyone know whats going on?

Yep, I know whats up.

You need two different notes to make the yelp
The start is a High note
andthe end is a low note.
To get both of these you need to take a little presure off the reed to drop the pitch. When you get the two notes then speed them up togeather to get a Yelp.

Don't get to discouraged dude... Learning how to call well with the mouth call takes some time!!!

I would suggest getting a few instructional DVD's on learning the mouth call and rent a few turkey hunting DVD's and watch those also...

And when it comes to practic. Practic often... I really dont think there is any such thing as to much practic when it comes to the mouth Diaphram!!!

For me it took me about 3 spring turkey season before I felt as thoe my calling sounded like I new what I was doing

Ok heres whats up. Start by fitting it to the roof of your mouth. But be careful cause some of the calls are made with plastic. If its plastic it wont form to your roof of your mouth. Hopefully it will bend to fit the roof of your mouth. You may need to trim off some of the extra material so you wont gag. Then begin blowing and try to say the word chick. Get a good rythum down. Then you can move on to a cluck and then try to cut. Then move on to the purr.

Don't give up. It sounds like the call is working fine. It does take practice and will get frustrating. If your just getting into turkey hunting, maybe try to start with an easier call just to learn the turkey laungage. Maybe a box call or push button. After being more familiar with the sounds, you will have a better idea in how to move your mouth/lips/tongue to mimic the call.

You will spend a lot of time getting the call to sound right.
Do not blow the air, instead huff it over the reeds.Use the air from your lungs by squeezing your stomach muscles and forcing the air out. Vary the tongue pressure and you will get different sounds. Constrict the air over the call by closing down your throat and increase it by opening it up. This will also create different sounds. A higher pitch and a lower pitch.
Put all this together at the same time and you will sound as good as Adrian in no time!!!LOL

Very sound advice!!!Alot of helpful tools out there to help the new caller along and Mr.Longbeard makes a good point in steering you in that direction.I would also suggest taking a hard look at the paticular call you have recieved.Any gift from mom is a good one but trust me when I say some manufactured calls can be difficult to operate even for the novice caller.A double reed is imho a great beginner call....keep trying, keep working on the mechanics of operating a diaphragm call and than dont be afraid to experiment with other makes and models of the diaphragm call....Bob
