If you have a Dick's sporting goods near you they are running a special on the 535 deer and turkey combo with a red dot for 299. This gun shoots 2 3/3 3 and 3.5 inch shell. I have one and it is a great gun. I will use it this yuear for squirlles and dove. I had to upgrade to an 835.

I think the mossberg 500 is a great gun. I killed my first bird with it. I now shoot an 870 and I don't know why I switched
. I guess I was just trying to something different. For the price I may get another one.

I own nothing but Mossberg Shotguns, and I really like them. For the price you can't beat a gun that shoots great, and you don't have to worry about getting it a little banged up in the field.
My present turkey gun is a older 500 model with a 28" vent ribbed barrell, Mossbergs own XX full turkey choke, and w/ Nitro ammo I get 35 pellets in the head alone at 40yards!

I own a 500 and I think they are fine guns. Like you said they are a little cheaper than the 870s. Check out the 535s before you buy a 500. They are the same gun only you can shoot 3.5inch shells and they aren't that much more. You may not need or want the 3.5 inch chamber now, but down the road you may want the added versatility. Good luck picking out a gun that suits you.
