Default RE: striker wood...

thanx guys...ill be looking for more woods to play with

untried talent....goto www.customsawing.com they sell EVERYTHING to make slate type calls....and also your own box calls...some take a little work like the box calls require saws i think..but you can order pots for slate type calls...and diffrent surfaces....as well as stuff to make strikers.....to start off...i kinda recomend buying atleasta few calls to get familiar with...you can pick up a mouth call cheap..3-5 bucks...slate type calls from 10-20....and box calls 10-20...all can be found at walmart if your local walmart sells turkey hunting gear..or most sporting good stores that sell hunting gear...that way you can learn how to call...and the calls are pretty much ready to go....then you can play around from there....

when i made my slate and glass calls i made the pots on a wood lathe in shop class in highschool....im trying to take it in college just to make calls! lol....i bought the surfaces from that website...its all pretty cheap...and you can put sound boards under the surface for diffrent sounds...my glass call i have a picture of my first turkey on the soundboard and you can see it through the glass...i need a new piece of glass for that call though....that company was very good..i liked their service...

the way i make my strikers is with a knife....i made a few on the lathe in shop class...but the teacher would only let me go down to a certain width(didnt want them to fly out...i liked him and respected his wishes...so they dont work because they are too big..) but now i split seasoned logs....using the center "heart wood" and made a mini wedge to split it down farther into a 1-1.5x1-1.5x8-12inch piece...and whittle the strikers down from there...mine are round..a tad bigger then a pencil at the bottom..and sanded round at the bottom skinny end...and the tops are probably 4 inches long...and about a inch thick..i make mine one piece mostly...buti have made 2 piece ones that worked well...a simple way to make strikes if find a farmer or corn field...collect some corn cobs...buy dowel rods cut them to legnth and slide it into the center of the corn cob...i cutmy cobs into pieces...4-5 inches or so...can do the same thing with carbon hunting arrows...good luck...although its not hard...i still say buy some calls and learn on those..then you have something to go by when you want to start making calls down the line..like i said...making cerain calls isnt too hard...and if you have wood working tools its easier...but bought calls already make the right sounds and you can learn to use those and make more later..when it comes to strikers on slate type calls diffrent woods and designs make a diffrent sound call....as well as diffrent types of woods on box calls....

a good simple to use call that can be bought cheap and takes practically no learning time is a "push button" type call.....you can find all kinds of them..wooden ones and plastic ones...ive played with one knight and hale i think it was..it was green..round plastic...and it sounded DANG good...push the "button" and it makes a yelp..keep pushing it and you got the basic hen yelp...
