.You got a rise out of me to,you can only kill a turkey so dead, and trust i have killed my share at 40 yards, with #6 shot, some with high velosity some with out,so you cant tell me they dont have way enough killing power at 40 yards.....

at the average range of 30-35 yds either or (4's-6's) work fine but myself I shoot 4's my 11-87 patterns them the best i pattern at 45 of my paces which is a solid 40 yds ant the 4's just tear up the pattern board under 35 yds with the choke tubes of today you could probably get by with just about anything but down range energy is very important past 35 yds. my son's 11-87 patterns 5's best he killed a monster gobbler for his first turkey last spring at 48 paces the bird barely flinched when it hit the deck

I have always liked #4 and #5 shots for all kinds of hunting with shotguns. They have always done a great job for me. If you wont a real tight pattern's than go for a 410 guage shotgun.

I shoot a BPS 3" mag.one of the old ones,no tube just full chock.have taken many many gobblers with it,with winchester copper plated #6s.
over my 35 years of trukey hunting my log book now has 74 gobblers in it,a few were taken with my deer rifle while deer hunting. the rest were taken with #6s.
#4s and 5s do not pattern well at all in this gun.
I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest
remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

I went through this last year when I tried a new choke. The new choke shot 6's best, the old choke shot 4's best. I really hoped 5's would pattern best, but they weren't very good with either choke. Ended up sticking with the old choke and #4 shot.
I've heard a few stories from buddies and aquaintances about wounded toms, or clean misses followed by "I don't understand it, my pattern is great and my crosshairs were right on him!" In every case, #6 shot was used. I'll admit that may be a coincidence, and a few "after the fact" stories hardly merit any statistical significance. I've also seen gobblers poleaxed at a pretty good distance by #6 shot.
Maybe I'll print this thread, and show it to my wife as evidence that I need to keep buying choke tubes 'till I get one that patterns good with #5!

BT I agree with ya as well as BB!I'm a # 4 shooter myself, but shot 6's for years until I patterned the 2 loads (my own personal reloads I might add)on paper. My 4's outshot the 6's by an average of about 8%.Really it seems to me we're really parting hairs here as Totoe suggested.Dead is dead no matter if we shoot 4's to 7 1/2's at reasonable distances. My question is how far do we really want to kill a turkey?Everyone always talks about callin them in close is where the thrill is at but they also want a gun that will lay em the grass consistently at longer and longer distances.BB already eluded to 4in 12 guage loads, and I would'nt laugh because we are definately headed that direction with the continued evolution of faster heavier loads coming out evey year,by our major manufacturers.Hell guys the way I see it we keep this up we will all need scopes on our guns pretty soon as our shotguns will really be more like rifles.
