Do you agree or disagree ? Shotpatterns
Guy's , I'm going to ruffle feathers here, but this is the way I see it ( just My opinion) There are lots of different chokes out there and Turkey shells, Talking penitration and the Knock down power of a shell, A lot of hunters have over looked the logical way of patterning there Shotguns. An average Turkey gun shooting out to 35 yards at a target will hit the target. Now that gun shooting #4 turkey loads is only going to put so many pellets in the Target. The same gun at the same target with #6 is going to almost double the hits because the #6 has almost twice the pellets in the load then #4. The thing is at the 35yard distance the #4 is going to have more pounds per energy then the #6's. Most guns will pattern the #4's but the hunter tends to lean to the #6's because of the amount of pellets in the target and forgetting that it only takes a couple to Kill the bird. My opinion #6's should be kept at a 30 yard range, because of the hitting power of the shot.Maybe turkey hunters should be patterning there guns with #4-#5 and forget the #6's because there always going to out shoot the other two loads. What do you think ?...BT

I know when I shot my #6's at forty yards into a phone book that the penetration difference was about three pages from the #4's and it was extremely deep. I believe a head shot turkey with number #6's from a decent gun has more than enough energy to kill a bird probably twice.

BT, that was always my argument as well, and why I shoot #5's excluively now, more energy than #6's and better pattern than #4's. The "perfect compromise"!!

Guys, guys...do you think it really makes a difference between 5 and 6?? IMO not really. When aiming for such a small kill zone i'd personally would rather stick with quantity over KE any day. It doesn't take much to crack a gobblers skull or shatter one of the pencil thin vertabrea. I have read threads where guys swear by the 7& 1/2 for turkeys and have killed birds out past 30 yards with them.
Ok, i will give you this, if i were to throw a hail marry shot at a gobbler at a questionable range i would rather do it with a 4 than a 5. However, i don't find myself taking those shots so for me, i'll stick with the 6's. Besides, i have a butt load left over from last year when the Sports Authority put them on sale. Along with my employee discount i think i got them for around $2 a box. If i do my part, they will do theirs.

I'll be sticking with #6 shot againthis spring. I really like to shot #5 shot but my gun/choke combo doesn't like it as well. Reallity is I wouldn't shoot at one over 35 yards unless I've already hit it anyways. Last spring a freind I was hunting with shot a big tom at 35 yards with 3 1/3" 4 shot and the bird went down. He(the tom) jumped up and started to run off. I anchored him at 37 yards #6 shot. Flipped him right over. I agree that 35 yards is the edge for #6 shot. But it works into my hunting style and patterns in my gun.

Not trying to get into a pissn' contest here, but I would love to shoot nothing but #4's period!! But my guns don't pattern that size shot worth a hoot, so I tried #6's and have found that #5's shot the best from my .665 sized choke tube. For the optimum pattern when using #6's, I feel that you should go to a little tighter choke tube than a .665, and since I already have a .665 turkey choke, #5's it is!! I didn't want to spend the money on another choke tube just to shoot #6's out of it. That's another thing to ponder before buying a custom turkey choke, make sure that you buy the correct size restriction that best shoots the size shot that you will be using. I know a lot of guys that shoot #6's, and I bet that they all have selected the best size choke that shoots that size shot out of their guns!!

Now you're killing me here!!!! I'm a #4 shooter and you're doing a good job of presenting reasons for me to go to #6s. I guess I'll have to try a few #6 loads out on the range this late winter.

I use #4's. They work good for me, and having 3 1/2" shells it does descent in patterning at good distances. Even thought the #6's do pattern better, I'm still gonna stay with the harder hitter, and better long range shot(IMO).
