I am thinking of buying a new boxcall what is everybodys favorite wood combos? also does anyone know what Neil Cost's favorite woods were i read somewhere it was butternut and something else cannot recall

Hard to beat the sound of butternut.I have one of Jim Smith's butternut calls.Really has a great sound.

Neil used Butternut for the box with a Red Cedar lid alot of the time. Combanations of those are good. I make my own calls and like Sumac with a Cedar lid, makes a nice soft sound. If your looking for something a little raspy and higher piched look at walnut or the harder woods. Tribute Custom Calls.

Neil used primarly soft woods, Butternut was definately one of his favorites. I've seen several Butternut Boat Paddles lidded in Cherry also. Alaskan Yellow Cedar was also a wood that he preffered butfound itdifficult to get his hands on. Both are great sounding woods. Butternut will generaly have a more mature hen sound and can be lidded with just about anthing. Here's a look at a few that I've built.

I have a paddle box that is simply awesome! The box is mahogany and thelid is red cedar. I don't go to the turkey woods without it anymore!

Mahogany also makes a fine call and can be lidded with just about anything.

Picked up a new "long box" by TPhunter. He callsithis "Burrieville Bomber", and I first heard this call in the spring woods this year by another fellow who bought one. Completely fooled my ears as to thinking a real hen was near the deeks. Here's a pic of that call.
