Neil used primarly soft woods, Butternut was definately one of his favorites. I've seen several Butternut Boat Paddles lidded in Cherry also. Alaskan Yellow Cedar was also a wood that he preffered butfound itdifficult to get his hands on. Both are great sounding woods. Butternut will generaly have a more mature hen sound and can be lidded with just about anthing. Here's a look at a few that I've built.
