Default Got Meat Today

Haven't seen a deer yet, but got a big hillbilly (cottontail for you yankees--we have cottontails and swamp rabbits). Missed another, a whopper--bound to have been a swamper--vanished like a puff of smoke when my arrow sailed just over his back (what I get for concentrating on missing a twig instead of my target). Some meat is better than no meat I reckon!

Most all my deer hunts turn into rabbit hunts if I see a bunny first. It's a lot easier to pack out several rabbits than drag a flippin' deer back to the truck. I guess ONE is even easier, huh, Chad?[8D]

With this dang ankle it's a chore to haul my rear in and out period! Honestly I don't know if I could get a deer out by myself or not--but I have friends and family nearby where I hunt.

I woulda' liked to have gotten that other big one--maybe next time. We see a lot of rabbits at that spot--I just haven't been shooting at them (season just opened yesterday anyhow). This was my son's first real hunting experience, and I'm glad he got to see what really happens when broadhead meets animal. He was sad at first--he still had the mentality of animals having family structures, the rabbit that was with this one being sad, etc. We had a long talk though, and he felt a lot better about it. Now he's ready to eat rabbit and go shoot more.

Good shooting Chad, congratulations. Good that your boy was there to be a part of it. So......how big them hillbillies get on your end of the globe? We got some cottontails around these parts and so far, the biggest wabbit I got was 1 1/2#. Seen them bigger, but doubt they'd taste much better.

Chad,
Sorry to hear about your lack of seeing deer. Congrats on the wabbit. So far I've seen 51 deer and 8 turkeys on my property in the last 3 weekends. Missed a doe at 22 yards and an 8 point at 10 yards. I did manage to pick a squirrel off of a branch at 20 yards though. What's wrong with this picture! Dick

Hey Dick--great to see you!

I missed a rabbit again today--probably the same one--right over his back again. Going to blame it on low light this time--was getting late, and cloudy all day. Watched the bugger for 30 minutes waiting on him to get out of the trash for a clear shot. So much for that--lol. Oh well.....maybe next time! With the size of these buggers, won't take a whole lot of them to equal the meat on a deer.

Sounds like your on a hot spot! All I've seen is rabbits and squirrels so far. I know some guys that have already killed at least a couple of deer this season, but my luck hasn't been that great. So much green still in the woods, and acorns dropping, it's hard as the devil to figure out where they are going to be. Looking forward to the first hard frost!

wasn't sure what this thread was about, especially after I saw that most recent post first as my browser opened the page. anyway, you guys shoot at small game while deer hunting? With your broadheads? My next question is have you ever lost an arrow doing this?

Wahya, sorry I missed your question earlier. I haven't weighed one, but I'm guessing the one I got was 3#, maybe more--dang big for a cottontail around here.

I did shoot that one with a broadhead, but I generally take a few Ace blunts with me for small game. I have lost arrows doing this--I lost an arrow and broadhead the day I shot the rabbit when I missed a second one. It hit the ground and bounced up and dissapeared into the woods. We looked for a good while, but no luck. Another great thing about the blunts is they aren't as apt to skip--the second miss was with one of these, and the arrow stopped where it hit. I've lost and broke a lot of arrows over the years rabbit hunting--on hits as well as misses--but that's just part of hunting.
