I have always shot split fingered and the other day I decided to try 3 fingers under (Not sure why) I found my bow shoots quieter, my groups are tighter and my release is smoother with my glove (shooting 20 yards inside -need to go outside and see if this holds true at longer distances) How many of you shoot 3 fingers under and is this a good way to go? Are there any downfalls to this style?
First shoot of the season is next weekend and I think I will try this method -
Thanks
Mike

If it works for you, I say go for it! Is it possible that your bow was tillered for 3-under? That would explain it being quieter (the only difference I know--bows will shoot quieter if shot for the release they were tillered for).
I' ve tried it a few times--not enough to give it a real chance though. I seem to get a better release/less finger pinch shooting split, and I just hate swapping up.
I don' t know of any disadvantages, other than some tournaments require longbows to be shot split-finger.

I shoot three under with traditional. When I shot compounds I shot split finger, but when I bought a recurve the guy told me to do three under to get the arrow closer to my eye. After getting use to three under, if I draw back split finger it' s almost like I' m not even the one holding the bow. My longbow seems a bit quieter if I shoot it split fingered, but it hurts like all get out and the view of the shot is too weird for me. I' ll stick to three under. However the way to go is whatever works for you. It could be split or three under, or something different. I know a guy who I think drew two fingers split on compounds. The only downfall I can think of to shooting three under is getting so use to being able to see the arrow better that you could never shoot split finger again. That' s not exactly a bad thing though

I shot 3under with my Compound (36" Axle to axle), but split with my Recurve (60" tip to tip). This week I am going to try 3under with my recurve. I want to find a way to shoot both the sameway. That way I am always setting up the same way. I' ll let you know how I do.

I have shot 3 under for the last six years and find it to be more natural. Many traditional archers think of it as a way to compensate for a poor split-fingered release/form. I don' t believe that is the case. More accurately, it is a matter of personal preference and what works for your style/form.
Thats my story and I' m sticking to it!

I have alway shot 3 under seems more comfortable to me . I have friends that were shooting split finger and had problems with pinching the nock to much thus having poor arrow flight. I have been to tournments where the archer draws with split finger and drops the top finger off the string thus having 2 under. Shoot whatever you shoot best and dont worry what everybody else thinks.

I' ve always shot split finger, until I got my present bow. It seems to like 3 under better, It is quieter, I get a cleaner, more crisp release, and I am more accurate. I' ll stick with it. I' ve also found that canting the bow is helping me with accuracy with this bow.

I' ve always shot split on my sticks and compounds with sights and 3-under when I shoot my compound barebow. I' ve been experimenting with shooting 3-under with my longbow and it feels better on my arthritic ol' piddies but, after so many years of shooting split finger, it does seem wierd. Maybe I' ll get used to it.
Like Chad said, 3-under is against the rules at some tournaments, but I' ve got more than enough tournament trophies already.

I shoot both ways. In a treestand in awkard positions, 3-under is often better suited for me. While roving, split finger. Hiding behind a tree, 3-under. Killed ' em both ways though (missed them too!!). My long range accuracy is better with 3-under due to the shaft lining up with the string under my eye.
Also, I shoot differently depending on my bow. For my fast takedown, I shoot 3-under most accurately. With my ' 68 Bear, I shoot split the best.
Go figure.
