High Country Archery...Pioneers or just crazy?
So there's been some discussion on High Country lately. What's their deal anyway? Are they trying to be pioneers with the "new improved" system of measuring arrow speed or is this just a bunch of "if I can't win by your rules, I'm makin' my own" shock value advertising crap?
Do they have the product that you can shoot less than 5 grains per pound and NEVER have to worry about it?? I heard some say the bow at the show blew and some said it was a different bow...what's the REAL story there?
I did notice the Hunters Friend website pulled them with this explanation...<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
HIGH COUNTRY ARCHERY: We have made every effort to include as many manufacturers as possible in our listing. However, we have elected NOT to include bows from High Country Archery in this year's comparison charts. For 2003, High Country Archery has made some rather creative changes in how their bow's speed specifications are achieved. Since this comparison guide is intended to allow "apples-to-apples" comparisons, such specifications achieved outside normal IBO Standards are not valid for the purposes of our spec-by-spec comparison charts. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Kinda curious on what everyone's thoughts are on this.

All they had to do is point out that High Country's advertised speeds are achieved shooting arrows at 3 grains per pound of draw weight instead of 5. But I accept their reasoning for not listing HC bows. If they really wanted to keep everything on the up and up though, they'd also list the bows with their AMO speeds.
Even though the bow manufacturers like to act like there is such a thing as an 'IBO Standard', there is no such thing. It's nothing but a cobbled together rating system going by what someone can get away with under IBO rules. They could even go 80 pounds with a 34" draw if they wanted to and still call it an IBO rating, because it's IBO legal for competition. A whole bunch of mfrs have been fudging their IBO ratings anyway, something they could not do if they actually went by their true industry standard, ASTM 1544-99.
I heard about the blow up too, but what I heard was the bow was being demo'ed in a dry fire machine when it went to pieces.
Anyway, my opinion.... In view of all the product liability lawyers getting rich these days, I think High Country is being extremely stupid by doing that 3 grains per pound stuff.

The arrow they were shooting weighed 225 gr. Of what use would that arrow be? I hunt with a relatively light arrow. But I'd never even consider 225 gr. It wouldn't be legal at an IBO shoot. So what's the point? I guess to say we can shoot very fast, and very foolish. Or, if to prove durability, that didn't fly either.

Yes, the bow that blew up was a dry fire demo. I have nothing against high country personally, i think there great bows and put together well and most anyone would be happy shooting one. Allthough, i want a bow i can feel. My Mathews Legacy weighs around 7 pounds, and i definatly know its there. But, when i was on the 3D range last year, all these guys were shooting high country in a group ahead, and yea, there arrows were zingin down there, but, it sounded like they were using there Remington 700s. Ill ad a little weight and take a little speed away for somethin i can shoot. It doesnt matter how fast the arrow goes past the deer.

To get all the up to date news on their products, including specs and options, go to their website:
http://www.highcountryarchery.com/
I think you'll agree that their brand new 2001 lineup looks pretty sweet!
