Strip as much as you can off. Taking it down to the shaft is not necessary. Close is good. Remove the nock. Get a can of acetone. About five bucks. Stick the shaft in the can and let sit for a couple or as long as it takes to drink a bee
r. Remove and scrape off excess which will be an easy job and you shouldn't in any way damage the shaft.
The acetone evaporates very quickly and will clean it. Works great when stripping vanes put on with super glue. It will not harm the shafts. Read the precautions on the can.
