RE: Winter Over Weight
Three miles seems a bit much to start a over weight dog out on. Just like humans the dog needs to start out short to go long. Why since the dog is inactive are you feeding a high energy food? The only time to feed a premium food is when the dog is in working season. Other than that go to a maintance feeding program.

I have a good friend who has a B.S. & M.S. in Molecular Biology. and last year, he received his PhD in Canine Nutrition.
He advises to put a dog on ONE food and ONE FOOD only and leave them on it year around -- he also advises to merely change the amount of food being fed depending on the calorie expenditure of the dog.

Sometimes a change is necessary. I personelly asked my VET yesterday, He advises change in food to owners all the time when it is medically necessary,Overweight, allergies,Lifestages ect....)
We are talking about over weight dog beeing fed high energy sporting dog mix. By switching(ONE TIME) to better formulated food his dog will be healthier in the long run.
This is just common sense.

My lab really put on the pound's since I've had him fixed, and not working him much all winter. I started this week taking the 4 wheeler out and roding him every evening. We go about 1 1/2 mile's up the mountian, then another 1/12 down the mountian. He get's 3 cup's of Diamond High Energy a day...The wife was giving him table scrap's every evening, but I told her "No More"....is there anything else I sould be doing, and am I running him to much...should I only run him every other day..??

Wayne1,my friends and I have conditioned many Hog dogs in the
off season on Tred Mills.Just install plywood on both sides of Tred Mill.
It toughens thier pads also.Just 15 or 20 minutes a day, don't over do it.
Check fat contents on Feed Bag's or Can's.
Try to feed high on carb's and proteins.
Plus, take to the VET once a year.
I had 2 Trail dogs, 2 Bay dogs and 2 Catch dogs, all CALAHOULAS.
KEEP ON ROOTING!!!

RE: Winter Over Weight
It is the same as if we were dieting. You can eat the same foods, just a smaller amount and you still get the nutrients, but not all of the calories. It is what your dr would recommend for you. I do agree with Doc that you should keep a dog on the same food. We did switch food with our dog, but she is still on it. It has a lower caloric value, but has extra vitamins and minerals that she needs. We will switch her back, but it will be gradually.
