I've a 12 month old EP. She rides great on short trips but on a long 2 hour plus she gets car sick. I've tried stopping often to give her a walk. She's only given food the night before. She's fine on the trip home after a hunt. But not on the trip there. Thanks

You are trying to defy nature. An English Pointer needs to be in the back of a truck in a dogbox or Vari-Kennel. It's a pointer thing. Let your poodle ride in the front in your lap.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
In all seriousness the dog is probably getting anxious about the hunt and how long it is taking to get there. Dogs can exhibit anxious behavior like humans. The anticipation of having to wait knowing that "I'm in the car I know I'm going after some birds" and it taking so long could be the cause. If it doesn't happen on the way home when the trip is as long( for me the trip home is longer because I drive a little slower when I have that after hunt glow going) it would indicate that it's not the length of the trip that's the problem.
Ask your vet next time your in for a visit.

I have a 13 y/o aussie/springer mix who has gotten car sick on all long car trips. It does happen to dogs too, lol! He loves to go places, but absolutely hates the car rides because of the fact they make him sick. My vet told us years ago to give him Drammamine(sp), and it works like a charm. Just follow the directions on the box (I think you have to give it to him an hour or two before the trip). We have taken him on 8 hour plus rides and he is fine as long as he has the drammamine. You can get it just about anywhere as it is the same stuff that you give to people who get motion sickness.

Dramamine works great. For an average-sized English Pointer, you can give one 50mg tablet about a hour before you travel. Dramamine, which is also used to treat human motion sickness, can be bought over the counter at any drug store.
