hey bud I would suggest a female ive had better luck with females more than males. also think about feeding them Eukanuba food. what color are you gonna get?but flea and tick meds are like 10-15$. so i would say about 40 amonth on food if your dog eats like mine!!! and about 10 on meds. so about 50-60 bucks amonth.

wow, i hadnt check on here in a couple days.

Thank yall so much for your input!

My deposite ensured that i had first pick of the FEMALES in the litter so i am getting a female. She will be a vey light colored yellow, almost white lab.

Also, my job is extremly flexible and has already told me that while the dog is under a year i can come home during the day to work for a hour.( I have a full use company truck :-) )

go get yourself a pheasant wing.
take each female to a room with just you and her away from others.
lay wing down and see which one shows interest in wing.
listen close for one that you can hear nose sniffing or tail wagging.
if she picks wing up, even better.

do this to every female you have a pick of,you will find 1 that will stand out from others on NOSE.

Will a duck wing work? lol

I never heard of that technique, people told me to take a tennis ball and roll it and see which ones chases it and brings it back, but i deff. like your idea.
Do you think the breeder will be fine with that?

7 week old lab will not fit tennis ball in his month.
you can buy the pheasant wings at LION COUNTRY SUPPLY,if you cant find one local.i guess duck wing would be fine if ITS NOT TO HEAVY OR BIG,you want something real light and small.

breeder should have no problem with wing or taking pupanother room.

i did it and i believe it helped.
only do this at 7 weeks as its to hard when they are 5/6 weeks old to tell anything.

you are not trying to get lab to bring it to you, thats great if she does, you main thing is NOSE.if she sniffs and shows interest, trying to pick it up or tear it apart, that dog to get.

if she shows no interest,i would pass on that one.

I got my Lab(male)out of a litter of 7.I pick the one that wasnt jumping on me,when I got him home I set him by me out side and the 1st thing he did was point(kinda) over at the bushes and made his way over there and in a couple min came out with a dead bird,he brought it right to me.he was a day short of 7 weeks old and hehas some kelloge in him.....He is AKC Reg....
The one things Labs need are alot of attention.if you dont have the time Labs arnt the dog to get if you want a huntin dog....My lab is 5yrs old and still full of spit and vinager, they say around 7 yrs they settle down abit...All he want to do is run and retreve wether its Duck or Ring Neck decoys.
FORGOT...when he was about 3 months old I had him sit by me as I let off around of 12gauge.I was very happy when he just looked up at me.....some people have had there dogs run for cover and if this happens you might have problems down the road with the dog being gun shy.....

1 dog in each litter will stand out from rest on their NOSE.
it could be male or female.
a dog trainer can pick that dog out in minute.

NOSE is what you look for,if puppy looks like its nose is stuck to floor, good chance that will be one.

i saw about 8 litters of american labs pups.
in about everyone,1 or 2 pups would fly around room with nose going,SNIFF,SNIFF, SNIFF,i mean really moving with nose stuck to floor.

others would walk around, sniff, look, run with head up.

this is not perfect way to pick pup for hunting as each pup has bad day, tired etc ..

BUT if you can get a look at pups at 6 weeks, then again at 7 weeks, you can get idea of one that uses nose the most..

our breeders put little tag on ears of pups at 6 weeks so when you come back at 7 weeks, you know which one you looked at.

my 2 cents on this only........

I am very suprized that they sold at 7 weeks old, here it is illegal to sell a puppy at under 8 weeks of age.. AKC or not doesn't make any difference when it comes to selling puppies...

I will pullthe papers and look, but Iam surehe was shy of 7 weeks, all the pups were wiend(spl).3 had numbers in there ears from being picked out earlier,2 were chocolate and the other black.to me it didnt matter.A good breed is just that dosnt matter the color.its what the bitch and sire have that counts. This was her 2nd litter.
When I look at his paper I will post the sire and Bitc(moms) parents.Maybe someone wil know the line,I beleave there was National and Grand National ln there,I want to say Neb,but will have to look.Time to dig in the file pile.....
