A good coyote gun for not a lot of $$$$$

Buckhunter, I have a little .223 H&R that I just bought. I sighted in at 100 and moved it up 1 1/2 inches. I can shoot 5 shot groups under an inch from a bench at 100 yards. Better than 3" that you want.

I looked at their website but it said that the 710 only came in the 3006 and the 270. Is the 243 a newer caliber they came out with for that model. thanks.

The singel 223 is a good price. Just something to remember. The barrels are interchangeable. So that one rifle can be many with a barrel change. Just thought I'd add. I bought my savage 223 scope an all for 350.00 and love it. Good luck with your choice

pabuckhunter, yes, the M-16 uses the .223 or as we call it the 5.56mm NATO. As far as shooting it 400 yards, that is not a coyote sized target, and it has lost most of its energy by then. When shooting an enemy, we don't care if we make a clean kill or not, we just want them down. As far as the .243 being used on M1 tanks, nope. The .243 Win is an off-shoot of the .308 Win, which was a military cartridge used in the M1A1 and M14 rifles. The 243 has never been used by the U.S. military, at least on the books. I wish we would go to it instead of the 223.

I would agree with the majority of the guys. I use a ruger .223 (m77) With a good scope and a bi-pod I'm sighted in 2" above bulls @ 100yds. and can smoke half inch groups @ 200yds. & have taken critters @ 300yds. with no problem. maybe it's the shells I'm using but I had little if any bullet drop at 300yds. It's a great gun and ammo is cheap, cheap, cheap!!!!!!
My buddie just bought a savage .243 bolt for a pretty reasonable price and it shoots nice and flat also. I don't know how he is at 200+ but I do know that he had 1/2" groups at 100yds using a bench.
Now my brother uses a 25-06 with a tacticle scope (nice!). I think I might pick a scope up like it. I think he paid $140 for the scope but, it has a range finder built in and a bullet drop compensator that you dial in according to the distance. Pretty slick! It has diff. dial rings for a whole list of ammos depending on what you use.
Many, many choices!
Good Luck!!!

Don't buy a 710 i know 2 people that already have sold theirs. And my local gunshop owner has a couple used ones on his shelf. I looked at them when they came out, and I think Remington goofed on this one. There are much better rifles in the same price range. Savage, Win. Black Shadow, ect.....

I would have to agree with .223 as a good choice of caliber. I have a remington model 788 in .223 that I just love.

buckhunter12,
If you're still in the market for a gun, check out the savage package guns at walmart. If you get lucky, like I did, you may be able to find "last year's model" on clearance for around $300. It's the exact same gun as "this year's model" except they knocked 60 bucks off to get it out of inventory.
Outside of the single shot guns, you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal than a Savage for an accurate new gun.
Check out www.savagearms.com for more info.
