Default "Bait" for coyote hunting unsportsmanlike?

This is my first post here on these forums. I am just getting into hunting. I missed the deer tag lotto(*sigh*, I hate AZ), and I think I'm going to try and do some coyote hunting.

A few years back, I was walking back from a friend's house with some hot salmon on a plate. Within 60 seconds I had 3 coyotes following me about 50 feet away. This gives me an idea.

What if I set up a plate of salmon(or other meat with a strong odor) and waited for them to come? Ignoring the fact that other animals will be attracted to the smell as well, is this tactic unfair? Is it unsportsmanlike to do this? We do something similar in fishing, and I was wondering if this was acceptable in hunting.

Thanks!

Depends on what you consider baiting and whether or not its legal.

You can bait fish.

In some places you can bait big game including bears and deer.

You can bait mouse traps.

Most all of these are with the intent to kill the baited.

If you consider that coyotes are for the most part considered non-edible predatory pest animals I guess you would have far less moral or ethical issues with baiting them.

Wouldn't bother me a bit, in fact we often set up near a dead cow or livestock at night for the sole purpose of shooting coyotes.

not a big fan of baiting any animal that can be readilly called in but if its legal than it becomes a matter of what you feel is right

Coyotes eat game. If it's legal and you want to do it, kill every one you can. Armadillos and hogs, too, if they interest you.

Unfair, not hardly. thing is that you're going into this thinking it's going to be so easy and you're going to find out otherwise. Put bait out, and sit and wait, and chances are that you'll not see a thing, so you'll leave the bait out hoping that the coyotes will find it and they eventually will, so you'll put some more out and sit and wiat, and nothing will come, and once again, when you're gone, they'll show up and eat what you left...and eventually you'll figure out that they usually show up at night, while you're snug as a bug in a rug, sleeping...

In short, bait does not gaurantee success......nothing wrong with it and you may find you patience tested to the extreme. good luck!

Here in New York State I will often set up over some sort of bait or lure.I mainly focus on non residential areas in the extreme cold of winter for this tactic.Although I don't always "bait" my setups, baiting could tend to attract predators to communities in which pets and/or people "COULD" become targets.I'm not sure what type of area (residential or non res.)that you hunt, but you may also consider a well placed decoy with some gland lure and a cover scent.I do all of my predator hunting from dusk til' dawn in thick brush-lot edges or woods where I may not see an aproaching animal,so attracting the target to a spot of my choosing sometimes proves beneficial.Good luck!!! Keep at it. They're smart critters!

This is how us trappers attracked our game in the north, but we let our snares do the waiting.lol But as it was said earlier it's not as easy as it sounds..
