Thom2's .17hmr
I own this rifle with a Sweet-17 BSA 6-18 x 40 mm scope
Ruger: Model 77/17VMBBZ Varmint rifle. This model features a black/grey laminated hardwood stock and a stainless steel barreled action finished in Ruger's low-glare, corrosion-resistant, Target Grey. The heavy contour barrel is 24" long. The rifle is 43.25" long and weighs 7.5-7.75 pounds.
I love it - very accurate. You just have to be aware of wind since the .17 is a very lite bullet. The velocity of 2550 takes down small game very quickly. I shot a coyote at 225 yard. He him in the neck. He went down and didn't even quiver.
This link will tell you more than you need to know about the .17 HMR.

if thats the distances you're looking at the I'd go for the 17 hmr. it'll do what ever you want at that distance. you may check out places like dicks sporting goods. Alot of the time you can get the target model savage with a 3-9 power scope for $299

the 597 only has a few hundred round through it , and it has been stripped and cleaned last "off" season , these 597 hang easily..the bolt assembly on these is quite heavy for a 22 , and if the ammo is not strong enough it doesn't eject the cartridge fast enough and and get's hung between the bolt and the eject port. i think it's just a issue with the 22 ammo not having enough power to cycle the heavy bolt. and eject the spend cartridge.
Float the barrel while you're at it and you'll have a reliable, accurate bunny thumper again. The part can be had at Midway for $19.99 and the install takes a few minutes. You can then pick up one of the other rifles recommended in this thread and have the best of both worlds.

if you wanna kill stuff, 17HMR for sure. the higher velocity will do good. a 17 is the same as a 22WM but a smaller bullet. the 17 will give you more range and will be worth your money for killing small game. but if you wanna shoot more cans than coons, 22WM

Cant beat a .22LR for alot of shooting. Why are you shooting coons 75+ yards away? you can easily get less than 50 yards to coons and be fine. If you do hunt withing 50 yards get a good bolt action or semi auto .22LR, if not get a .22 Mag. If distances 75+ yards away for small small game like squirrels, coons, and even coyotes get a .22Mag. The reason why? Cuz a .22Mag can shoot 2,550 FPS with a 30 Gr. which is fast enough, will NOT be thrown by the wind like any .17, and you can also pick 30-50 Gr. for different applications. Take down coyotes with the 50 grain bullet, take down squirrels from long distance with the flatter shooting 30 grain bullets, or shoot the 40 grains ones for mid range coons. Case closed!
