I'd like to get into coyote hunting and i'm looking for a factory .308 round that wont do too much damage to the pelt.
Is there anything loaded along the lines of a barnes varmint grenade in .308? I'm thinking about hornady 110gr TAP but im not sure.
I never thought I'd say this but...I'm trying to avoid buying a new gun.

good luck that is a big bullet to try not to blow a whole in a 30 to 40lb dog,I dont know but it sounds like to me you should try to get a solid controlled expansion bullet and try not to hit the shoulder,go for the ribs the only one that I have killed with my 308 wasn't pretty it left a hole about 3" in diameter and lots of stuff coming out of it's rib cage,I was able to use the fur after sewing it up for a wall hang.I beleive that a varmint grenade would be the wrong answer or a ballistic tip due to rapid expansion,I beleive that a regular soft point or something in that line would do a lot less damage and the TAP might work good it is probably one of the lightest bullets without a hyper velocity that you can get in a factory load,if you reload you could load some down to suit your needs.Good luck and good hunting, and if you blow a whole get out the needle and thread!!

Federal makes a 150gr FMJ that should just blow through with a small hole. Anything that expands will make a bigger hole going out. If it fragments could also do the same thing.
You would be better off using a shotgun or something. The 308 is a bitmuch for them.

about the hollow point bullets,I think they are going to pass through a coyote unless he's way out there or it's a frontal shot,my 223 with ballistic tips or rem.45 gr. hollow points usually goes all the way through a broadsidecoyote and sometimes looks pretty bad on the exit side so I think that a soft point is the answer for a factory load, and if you reload just listen to #40 the way he kills coyotes I'm sure he's probably killed several with this caliber, nothing bad meant to you #40 you must have a lot of coyote hunting ground with a lot of coyotes.

WAY TO MUCH GUN! I hunt for the fur and if your goin to then i would try smaller calibers. My favorites for fur would be 17 rem., 204 ruger, 221 fireball, 223 AI, 218 bee, 220 swift, and the 22-250 and 243 arent too bad but id much rather use the other calibers. Dont listen to all the yayhoos about usin rimfires. rimfires are not made for the bigger varmints like yotes, foxes, bobcats, etc. Hell a 12 or 20 guage are good too with #4 buck. And in the last resort if your going to try to use your 308 then stick with the deer bullets. Barnes VG is used for prairie dogs, ground hogs and such...bascially to blow the hell out of stuff. lol...And TAP...haha funny
