RE: Best caliber
I have to agree with your buddys too. I shoot and like the 22-250, but if I was in the market for a new gun, I would have to look at the .223. The 22lr just isn' t enough and the 22 mag. is on the lower edge of being enough, for coyotes anyways.

i,m going to also agree with your buds, rim fire 22' s are marginal at best on coyotes.i shoot a 243 becouse its all i have, but if some day i decide to buy a rifle for just fox and coyote it will be the either the 22-250 or the 223.most likly the 223 for most shots around new york are under 200 yards.

I' d go with a .223 remington. Preferably in an AR15. With the .223 you have the ability to fairly fast with a light bullet for moderate range shooting 0-300 yards and heavy bullets 60-75gr for shooting beyond 300. Ammo is super cheap and there are a lot of different factory loadings for it. With the AR you can have the best of both worlds, one light short upper with 16-18" barrel and low power scope for close range shooting and another 24" heavy barrel upper with fast twist 1-9/1-8/1-7 for shooting those heavy .224 cal bullets for long range work.

I have taken many different varmints with many different types of guns. I am currently using my new .17hmr to take armadillos and crows. It is extremly accurate and flat shooting. It is a rimfire, but it is more devastating than the .22lr or mag. I have been reading up on the new Remington model 700 .221 fireball. This seems to be a great varmint gun.

If that' s all you have, and that' s what you want to use, keep going with the .22lr or WMR, I' ve taken quite a few yotes with a lr in my day, and have found that the reason people doubt it' s effectiveness on yotes is much similar to why people doubt the effectiveness of .243' s on deer, they' ve never used one and it' s a smaller cartridge than what they' re using, it' s what I like to call " bigboreitus" . Obviously, as you' ve said, the .22rimfires work, a guy just has to treat it for what it is. THAT SAID, since I have one now, I shoot a .22-250, and haven' t used my .22lr on a yote in years, and probably never will again, but only because I can reach out so much farther, but I' d be the last to ever criticize someone for using a .22lr intelligently for coyotes. If you go out and just blast rounds at the first yote you see where-ever he may stand, that' s one thing, but since you said you' ve TAKEN coyotes with it, I' m assuming you' re hunting correctly to fit your arm.
