Finding bowmaking instruction

I just cut down a large Ironwood tree fro a friend. and would really love to make a bow or two out of the wood. Never made one before. Where can I get the best, most detailed instruction for free, or...

Try this (from field and stream):

Larry Brown’s Squirrel, Biscuits, and Gravy (Serves four)
The late Larry Brown, the author of Joe, Billy Ray’s Farm, and seven other classics of...

RE: worst tasting meat

I am not sure if there is a way to backtrack to find out what species of critter it came from, but if I remember correctly, the worst tasting meet could reliably be found in my school cafeteria....

RE: elk in tx

Thanks, Jud. I probably would let it pass as well. Would be awfully tempting, though.

RE: Marlin Cowboy .30 .30 for Hogs?

A single action revolver is the best gun for the first six shots. Ain't nothin' more reliable.

RE: elk in tx

I believe Elk are considered exotics here in Texas (non-native). If that is so, there should be no closed season, no bag limit. Unless, of course, you weren't sure exactly who's land you were on....

RE: what kind of gun do you use for small game

Mossberg Maverick 88, and Winchester 9422 with iron sights. I want to get more into Black Powder squirrel hunting. I just have to figure out a way to make some extra money to pay for the gun(s).

RE: Texas Hog Hunts...??

Don't know anything about either of these operations, Scott. Sorry. But, in these areas, I would be surprised if you didn't see a bunch of hogs. Moch more open country than the big thicket and...

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons

I feel the same, Rebel. My way isn't right for everyone. But it is for me. At least right now. I used to hunt hogs at night, alone, with a bow, and no back-up weapon. Several other hunters had...

RE: First Black Powder Squirell

I haven't used black powder for squirrel since the '60's. Somehow it adds to the experience. Squirrel in gravy is sooo good!! As is squirrel stew, and my dad's favorite, squirrel spaghetti sauce....

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons

I see you are from my neck of the woods, Jeff. Do you hunt WMA's or private? I would LOVE to find a private day-lease for hogs where the action was fairly steady. Just have to be a good rate for me...

RE: Fur Prices??

I LOVE that magazine. I have spent many a blizzard sitting near the woodstove, reading a copy of Hardings magazine (FFG), and daydreaming of what I would do inbetter weather. Only things in print...

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons

You know, I am told that all the time. And, I agree for the most part. I was raised on a hog farm (600 hogs, plus dairy and beef cattle, chickens, sheep, goats, 30 horses, ducks, geese, rabbits,...

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons

Archery stalk at night is definately the best way to go. But, the rifleI now use is the Marlin Cowboy in 45/70 pushing a 405 gr. Idaho Territory hardcast at 1900 fps. Really drops 'em. Backup is, of...

RE: StillHunting, stalking gun

Never fired the New England rifle in .270, but I wouldguess the recoil should be quite managable. Of course, that is subjective. My first choice would be the Winchester model '94 Trapper. Fast...

RE: Texas public land hunting

I have been hunting the WMA's in Texas for like 15 years now. I used to hunt an unnamed WMA (had a number, like 207) near Maydell TX for years. Great place, crawling with deer, feral hogs, and...

RE: 45-70 ?

I bought a Marlin 1895 Cowboy in 45/70 a few years back. I reload to 1900 FPS, 405 gr. hardcast lead bullet. Knocks the snot out of big feral hogs. I love the gun. 10 roundsin the Cowboy, plus 6 more...

Your son definately sounds like a boy that deserves bragging about, Maine. And, you sound like a dad a boy could justifibly brag on, as well. Very good hunting ethics you are teaching the boy. It is...

RE: low coon prices?

It's a damned shame that fur prices are so depressed. As a poor farmboy in the '60's, I came away with many a slick new toy (guns, bows, dirt bikes, saddles, boats) from money earned trapping and...

RE: Good used recurve for $100 or less

I learned traditional bowhunting from my dad as a young boy. Started on rabbits, squirrels, grouse, ringnecks, etc.. When I was allowed to hunt deer with a bowwas when I could shoot a 55 lb recurve...
