RE: Taking children to observe deer hunting

Taking your kids out hunting with you is a great idea.I started bringing my boys with me when they were around 7 or 8 years old. I didn't take them out on opening day, but I always planned ahead when...

We had mixed luck in WI this year. My oldest son shot his first buck, my brother shot a nice, bigdoe, my sister-in-law shot 2 fawn s(she was sure they were adults when she saw them walking).

My...

RE: 239 pounds 16 point

Fantastic deer!Being gone at the taxidermists so long reminds me of the story about the Jim Jordan buck. Make sure you get him back! Jordan didn't get recognized as the killer of his deer until after...

RE: Trouble with my Savage 30-06!!!

RE: yes im a sissy

My 12-year old is shooting my 30-06 this year using the reduced recoil ammo from Remington. We went out to the range and he shot a whole box of it without any problems, and he is only 85-90 pounds. I...

RE: Any good things to eat while in the stand?

For opening day, when I know I'm going to stay in my stand all day, I pack a few turky or ham sandwiches in ziploc bags. Bottled water to drink. Sometimes I'll bring a thermos of hot chocolate, but...

RE: Whatta you guys think about the 243?

I was looking into a .243 for my son. Then I heard about the 7mm-08. Both are based on the .308 cartridge, but the 7mm-08 seems to be the hands-down winner for me.

I'll be the first one to admit...

RE: Thank you service men and women!

Great story. Great Deer. A big thanks to you for giving a veteran such a great experience. And an even bigger thanks to all of the veterans out there who have given moreto us than we can imagine.

RE: For those with Children

There has been a lot of good advice given so far... If he is afraid of heights, then let him hunt from the ground. However, if it is that he doesn't want to kill something, maybe he could spend some...

RE: What is your favorite time in the woods?

I love the early morning - about an hour before shooting light. A few years back we had a meteor showerthat was peaking over the opening weekend in WI. There is nothing like sitting in a standwith...

RE: Sons first deer, MONSTER... missed

Sorry to hear that he missed such a nice deer, but you and your son have shared something that is becoming less and less common - a hunting experience together that you both will always remember.

RE: Scopes in the rain

Scopes still work well in the rain. Still, one of the best investments I've made is a set of scope caps that pop open silently with the touch of a finger. They make it easier to carry the rifle...

RE: best 1st deer rifle

For a 12-year old, I would consider calibers with a relatively moderate recoil (as others have stated). Look at the 260 Remington or the 7mm-08 - they are almost identical in performance and have...

RE: shot placement questions

I've taken the neck shot a couple of times before - each time I droppedthe deer right whereit was standing.

I've also taken a spine shot before - although I have to admit it wasn't on purpose......

RE: ballistics

I've always had the best luck starting at 25 yards. Get your rifle boresighted, then get it so it is dead-on at 25 yards. Then move up to 100 yards and you should at the very least be on thepaper.

RE: opening day gun season - 1st ever deer

Congratulations!

I have to agree with the comment about getting it mounted. At the very least, get the antlers mounted (a full head mount isn't cheap). I get to look at my wall every day to see...

RE: Wow. Best stand ever.

Sounds nice, but be careful. I shot out of a nice tree stand with tongue and groove cedar siding for walls and a shingled roof (opensides,no closeable windows) and thought I would be deaf for the...
