Minimum acceptable for 300lbs @ 300 Yards

What do you think the minimum caliber is for a 300 lbs thin skinned animal at 300 yards.

300 yards is about the limit (if not further) than I would feel confortable taking a shot in the right...

I know this is probably a tired subject but here I go anyway. I am looking for a deer only rifle and want to make sure I have enough gun if I see a big mule deer without knocking...

308 for a younger shooter?

Does anyone have an opinion about a .308 for a kid? Some of the recoil info I have seen puts about the same (or slightly less) as a .270 win.

I have an older 300 H&H and am looking for a smaller deer rifle. Seeing as the 300 H&H ammo is hard to find I was wondering if the 308 uses the same bullet. If so, I can set myself up to reload...
