Your favorite deer rifle that is NOT a 270
Hello,
I know this is probably a tired subject but here I go anyway. I am looking for a deer only rifle and want to make sure I have enough gun if I see a big mule deer without knocking myself out from under my hat. I have been looking at the following rounds: 243, 25-06, 260 Rem, 6.5mmX55 and 7mm-08 with a few others. Have I missed any and which is the right one.
CK
P.S. I have owned 2 270 Wins and I am not totally convinced that it isn't the answer.

Of the choises you listed, i'd grab the 7-08 and run, as it easily has plenty of power for any deer, or blk. bear. I wouldn't be afraid to hunt even bigger game than deer/blk. bear with it, useing Nosler Partitions, and keeping the ranges reasonable. It's a lot of power in a non magnum short action rifle, with low recoil. Hard to beat that combo....
My personal choise is a light weight 7 express Rem. (280 Rem.) that i have, it's been great for the deer, blk. bear, and caribou ect.. i've taken with it.. It's light, easy to shoot, and i'll never part with it!! :>

thats an easy one... T/C Encore with a 375 H&H barrel... 200 gr bullets for plinking and 275's for hunting... enough thump for anything in North America... nothing is marginal... don't need expensive partition bullets... if you can see it you can kill it... if not that I'd be using either a 270 or 280AI...

If I was forced to choose something else as a perfect deer cartridge second to the 270 Win. I would probably go with the 6mm Rem then the 280 Rem.
I just don't there is anything available that kills deer better than the 270 Win. With 130 grain bullets it shoots nearly as flat as any magnum out there with a +-3 inch range of rise and fall to 300+ yards, ammo is available anywhere that ammo is sold, it is inexpensive, you can choose a rifle or a dozen from every single manufacturer.
It's not sexy or glamorous but it does its job at least as well as any other cartridge out there and far better than most.
I guess it would also depend on where I was hunting. If it were thick woods where a 50 yard shot would be considered long I'd probably pick something like a 30-30 or 35 Rem.

I'd go with a 375 Remington Ultra Mag...........just kidding! Have you ever shot a 270 Winchester (I assume your talking about the 270 Win.) I have a 280 Rem. The 270 Win. and the 280 Rem. are as close to one another as any two cartridges we have. I don't think the 280 Rem. kick bad at all. If you haven't shot one I would. If you have shot one and can't handle the recoil I don't think you'll like a something like a 7mm-08 Rem. or a 308 Win either. The 270 Win. does kick more then these two, but its not that much more!

270's are good all around calibers but not my choice as I dont own one and dont really plan on owning one. My favorite caliber over all is the 308 win.
