I prefer a reel style with a jug that the line goes into, the spools that you wind the line onto work ok and they are less expensive, i agree you may need a little heavier draw

I would have waited a minimum of 12 hours to track him. Even if he didn't lay down he very well could have and you could have pushed him too deep and far to recover. I think he may survive, big bucks...
