Sounds like you have solved the problem per your second post. I experienced the same thing the first time I loaded .30-06. An experienced guy sorted it out for me. The crimp shoulder on the die was the culprit in terms of crushing the case as I attempted to seat the bullet. The Speer manual has a very good set of instructions concerning this - I simply failed to study the print sufficiently.
What it says to do is run the press up to the top of the stroke (handle all the way down) with the case in the shell holder, then screw down the die until it touches the case neck. It then says to back off the die a couple turns. This will allow the bullet to be seated without interference from the crimping shoulder on the die.

This appears to have been your problem. I seat the bullet a wee bit at a time until I get the desired overall cartridge length.

I crono'd a few factory Remington 32-20's out of my revolver.. duplicated that load with sToOPid Midway brass that is actually shorter than SAAMI trim-to length by a few thousandths... seated an XTP on the cannelure... about 30 fps faster than the factory stuff with no pressure signs... I'll play with them in the revolver untill I get the rifle, then I'll do exactly that... play with seating depth, slower powders, heavier bullets, etc.

That Remington ammo is pretty wuss in this cartridge, because it has to be a "lowest common denominator" load... otherwise some poor schmuck is gonna orbit the receiver of his vintage Stevens rifle... in fact, the factory stuff barely met starting loads published by Lyman...

Plus, you hafta remember, it's not a 65,000 c.u.p. belted magnum we're talking here.. it's an 8,500 c.u.p. 32-20... about the only way you could destroy it would be to brim the case with HP38... and as dumb as I am, I'm not about to do something that stupid..

except squerzil hunt with a .32-20 revolver... aim for the nose, you either miss or hit 'em in the head... yeah, you waste a few more rounds that way, but putting a .22LR up their nose with my K77-22 got to be a little boring... the Brunswick Stew was tasty, though...
