bigcountry I hear you loud and clear, and I also state again I am no rifle expert or reloading expert. I have understood that at my speed I better not expect more that 1000 rounds before groups realy go to crap. But my gun is factory with a standard 26" tube. I want a custom barrel maybe 27.5" to 29" long. I don't know what is the best length for custom is though? How long is your barrel? Also if I shoot a 200 Gr. bullet at around 3200 to 3250 f/s which is still fast for a 200 gr. bullet will that burn out a barrel just as quick as a 180 at 3400 f/s?

I don't know if there is a solid answer for this. You are trading bearing surface for speed. Pressure remains the same, but your powder load is lower with the 200. And pressure and heat is what craps the throat out. I bet it would be a toss up. Good question. Maybe someone else knows the true answer.

I got a 26.5" barrel. 30" would be my limit. After that I don't think you would be able to get much more velocity.

Your right, when I had this 2nd 300RUM factory gun, I didn't mind burning it out either cause I couldn't wait to get a match barrel. The factory barrel copper fouled real bad. And it drove me nuts. So I understand where you are coming from. Good luck either way.

Pressure and heat determine the rate of throat erosion and the pressures would be the same with maximum loads. The 200 gr would burn slightly less powder but it would be in the barrel slightly longer so I doubt that there would be much difference if any.

hey bigcountry, what do you think a 180 accubond would do in our 300 rums for those hogs this spring? Id take mine except for the problem Im having with chambering my second shot!! My smith is working on it right now, but he said he cant guarantee that it will ever be as fast as and 06 or 308 casing I guess ill just stick with my 760 and take the 870 too.

Hey, If I had a low power scope mounted I would consider 300RUM for those hogs. Just for fun. Hey, I might do that.
