Default Penetration

In a 44Mag, what is the best penetration bullet out there? I am not a cast/mold guy, but would like to understand it. I shoot Laser-cast bullets out of my 44mag, but not sure if they are hard enough to push them with 24gr of H110. Maybe foul too much, maybe they are not designed for 1500fps. I am curious what you guys think who test for hardness, and maybe know the limitations of pushing a cast bullet.

I mean, I know an XTP isn't designed to be an extreme penetration bullet, but to mushroom. Will a cast bullet penetrate much better than say a XTP?

All other factors being equal, the harder the bullet, the more it will penetrate. I would think there are cast bullets that will out-penentrate the XTPs.

I hear people casting thier own, and setting the recipe that will out penetrate. But I couldn't get Laser-cast to explain their hardness. I have always used laser-cast for plinking with 10gr of unique. But was thinking about coming up with a load that makes a good backup for a variety of things. I don't think the XTP would be a good backup for say bear. I have shot deer with it and not penetrated very far. And on bear I would say less.

"In general" a "cast" bullet out of a 44 mag. will have more velocity than a "jacketed" bullet of the same weight with the "same load". Heavier bullets will out penetrate lighter ones. AND, if you cast the bullets "too hard", they will break up when they hit bone!

So, you have to decide what the bullet will be used for, and then pick the bullet for "that" job.

I use "Ballistic Advantage BOAR-SLAMMER Premium Hunting Bullets" (915-529-3363) they are LBT style bullets. I also have used "Cast Preformance Bullets" they are also LBT style bullets. I have never killed anything with them, but my cousin killed a cow elk with "BOAR-SLAMMER Bullets, and a friend has killed a mule deer with "Cast Preformance Bullets". Good luck.
