Default sierra gamekings

alright guys I used the ct. silvertips in .308 150 gr. 1 dead doe no bucks seen to shoot needed meat. I am thinking of reloading some sierra gamekings next for my .308 my questions are; how do the gamekings compare to basslistic style bullets., most my shot are 200 yrds and under should I go with 150 or 165 gr. in my .308, also what is the difference between the sierra gameking and their flat back soft tip pointed bullet cant remember the name right now.

thanks chris

The Game King line of Sierra bullets have boat tails. The Pro-Hunter line does not. Both bullets kill deer equally well. Have used the 150 grain .30caliber Sierra Game King and Pro-Hunter bullets for about 40 years. Have killed about 200 deer with those bullets. The vast majority of those kills have been bang flops.

I have used Sierra bullets in.30 calfor about 50 years. Before the company decided that they needed fancy names--Pro Hunter and Game King--they wereknown simply as Sierra spitzer and Sierra spitzer boat tail. I still have some of the original packaging. The.30 caliberoriginally came in 150 and 180 grain versions, with the 165 grain weight being added later. All of these versionshave proven to beexcellent for deer size gameand are very accurate bullets, or they would not have survived this long. In my rifles, I have gotten slightly better accuracy with the flat base bullets, but the difference is not great.

I have been using the 165gr gameking for years and years. They fall apart on shoulder shots pretty quick. But they are one bullet that seems to always work no matter what. If your having trouble getting accubonds shooting, or barnes X, and at your wits end. It is my goto bullet for instant gratification.

I only like shooting them velocities below 2800fps. I sure would never consider them in a 300win mag for 100 yard hunting.

I have tried the 150gr prohunters and just can't get the accuracy I do with gamekings. I shoot 46gr of Varget with 165gr gameking in my 308win. A-bolt. And 44gr of Varget with 168gr matchking ina 308 FN SPR.

Bigcountry,
I agree that they are a bit too lightly constructed for magnum velocities. I once loaded some 165 gr in a .30-338 and shot a medium Pa. doe in the ribs. She looked like she had swallowed a grenade. But, in a .30-06, they are not nearly so explosive, but are stillvery accurate sudden death. By the way,I don't know the reason, but on shoulder shotswith my .30-06's, the flat base seemed to hold together better than the boattail.

I shoot the 130gr. handloaded Gamekings in my 270. Only shot 1 little doe so far. Shot her in front of her shoulder from 50 yards at a slight quarter to and the bullet exited just behind the opposite shoulder. Pencil hole in and a nickel hole out. DRT.

I've never personally used the Gamekings but have friends who do with good success. On the flip side i have killed a ton of deer with the Prohunters and they have always performed well in both accuracy and on game performance.

I love the accuracy of the Pro Hunters, but I'll never use them on hogs again. They blow up too fast. I want entrance AND exit holes (double the blood trail).
