In my opinion the rut is the rut. It is controled by length of day precieved by the does. Hormons in the bucks and does get them into their breeding time. Every year about the same time.
Now what us hunters see is the day time activity of that breeding season. If we see a lot od deer in daylight hours and we see bucks with or after does we say "the rut is on". Day light activity is affected by cold and other weather factors and moon phases. The bucks have been looking for does since early Nov. and will continue till late Nov. as usual. Whether they are active and highly visible in daylight or not.
Thats the way I see it.

Oh yeah she is in full swing now!!! Went out weds morning with the rifle and saw 4 bucks running does, nothing I wanted to shoot but was a great few hours. Then this morning I slipped out for another quick am hunt with the smokepole in the prim. zone close to s'toon and saw 3 bucks running does hard, including one I have never seen before and he was very tempting! However being first thing I was hoping I may catch the bruiser I have been oogling but no such luck. I haven't seen hide nor hair of him since the first of November. I talked with a buddy who also hunts the area and live's on a acreage close by he as well hasn't seen him even at dark like usual heading to the fall rye..so not sure if he is dead or just moved off. With only tomorrow left I can't decide if I should go back to the ML zone or take the big stick...decisions! I have all but resolved myself it may be next year country for mio with regards to a big buck but you never know...THAT'S HUNTING!!! Any luck I will be caping a good deer tomorrow but seeing I seem to be 30 sec behind every good deer this fall, it may be a jerky deer or nothing at all...either way as always she's been a interesting ride and will have me searching for more next year. God you gotta love this sport!!!!
Best of luck to all those still searching and to those who are tagged our...congrats!

Just came back from a 4 day trip up north and let me tell you....it was brutal[:@] Between 4 of us we saw about 5 bucks total! and only a handful of does in which not one was being followed by any bucks. 4 guys-4 days=1 deer(spiker), and I got him the last 5 minutes of shooting time as we were heading out. It was very warm and there was 1/4" of freesh snow on the ground so we couldn't pattern if we tried. The only buck I had a chance out came out directly to my left as I had my gun pointed down a cutline. He walked within 10 yd's of me and I couldn't turn the little bit to squeeze off a shot[:@][:@] It was so frustrating but exciting, as soon as he caught my scent he took off and I tried the running shot at 15yds but missed! Man what a year, passed up so many w.t.'s early with the bow, only to not see any during "prime time". Like ya said skeeter it's been an interesting ride this year. Oh well at least the little one I got will taste good but there sure isn't much meat this year[
