[8D]Saskbush:D
Dang that is one heck of a buck,I'd guess him at 180 + BTR,if you have a local BTR scorer ,get him to score it for you as you'll lose nothing for a score as they give the deer full credit for everything. They also can score him green as that is how it works,no need for the normal 60 days drying time,it's called the full credit scoring system and now they actully have added the inside spread too.;)He may not be to wide on the outside spread 22 max but he will make up in his circumference measurements and also the 3rd beam. Anyhows it's a great buck and did I see you say you got him in Alberta??? LOL Good luck with the rest of the season. The pre rut is just starting here in the Bow Zone ,fresh scrapes showing up all over and now with the 5 inches of snow, us ole geezers can see that much better. I'm in the middle of painting the guest room for my hunter coming in on the 11th till the 25 of hopefully some great action.Best of luck 2 all of you great Canucks:eek: Rocky |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey Rocky, I've heard it's real cold with some snow in Edmonton. That sounds like good news considering last year it hit 70F one daywhen I was there![:@] I was hoping it wouldn't be frigid when I come up but I'll take what ever happens.I hope with all this cold the rut doesn't kick intoo soon.:)The 15 day extended forcast says continued very cold with snow off and on so we'll see what happens.
I got a doe for the freezerso far this season here in Pa, our rut will be jumping off next week and I have 3 days to hunt (dark to dark), ;)the 6th, 7th and 8thso I'm hoping to get a shot at abuck. I got pics of 6 differant bucks with my trail cam. Only 2 of them are shooters though. I'll stay in touch and I have your number. I'm more psyched than last year since I'm somewhat familure with some of the spots I've already hunted!!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JPF, how far were you from Lake Dief? Been a growing herd in that area for some time, in fact they have been able to be hunted via draw. I saw a couple of HUGE bulls 2 years ago while ml hunting on the east side of the lake, it was 30 plus herd out in the middle of nothing but BA prairie. Also seen a couple of big bull moose that same day. Just opened a season for them this year via the draw as well. Any way great pics. That 190 typical is a hoss, even with the rt side rear fork undeveloped. As far as typicals go them big G2's/ 3's and carrying massout is what it'sall about! Score on big typical is a tough one here. Congrats to them both.
AG, I ain't going to say anything about shooting to far I have been known to launch a few myself;)! I ain't much of a bowhunter anymore, bummed shouldermakes it difficult to practice or be as effecient as I once was. You'll get em next time. YF, curious what is BTR? Good report, as that is surely headed smack into our province. Best of luck in the coming weeks. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
early in 3, what happened to 1 and 2:D:D:D! Yeah she is shaping up nice the forecast here is changing hourly was suppose to be a short burst then warming no it looks to be cold, cool and cold again with snow showing up in a number of the days
. Good luck in Canada and PA, keep us posted. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Awesome critters in the photos guys. Saska...wow now that is some true character there. Very cool buck, congrats again.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I knew our luck would be changing after that wierd week last week.
Skeeter, I'd say don't adjust another thing on that gun...that is tight!! Sask,:eek::eek:can you say PIG?? WOW way to go buddy!! And think we all got the pics and story before BIG BUCK mag. did:DSeriously though, that buck is worthy for it's pages. Real nice work on him. He definately is a buck of a lifetime and you should hang him proudly on your wall with a shoulder mount. Can you imaging if he had a couple more years on him. He wouldn't be able to hold up his head. I'd say the Tacoma was broken in real well now!! JPF, nice pics man...looks like I'm not the only one seeing stuff in the wrong place[:-] Well boys, I'm on pheasants for another 2 weeks then I'm off to the great white north for Sask's deer's dad. Keep up the posts & pics! I'm loving every minute of it! Here's to a good game this weekend between the stamps & the riders!!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Good luck on them tasty little runners JD and also when you head north for white's. I am sure we'll be treated to more great pics. BTW, what type of camera do you use?
Here's to a good game this weekend between the stamps & the riders!!! Heard the Stamps will not allow "Gainer"(Rider's mascot who is a rowdy little gopher, FYI)in thestadium Sunday. They stated unruly fan implications.:D Had to laugh, if it was b/c 1/2 the stadium will most likely be dawning the green/white vs red/white! Home field advantage may be a toss up in this contest. The Stamps have the QB, gut tells me they will go on to play the Lions. You can bet I still be cheering forHank to falter and the Riders to stop under achieving as a Rider fan but reality tells me to woo my party plans;)! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thanks guys,
awesome Mulie buck JPF and cool elk pics. AG, tough luck on the mulies and frozen feet. I've done the same only with cactus thorns instead of snow and ice. JD, he will be going on the wall. I am scared to think what he would have looked like next year. he likely would havefallen ass over tit since his body can't weigh more than 150 pounds dressed. Where are you heading for whitetails. PM me if you'll be in the Peace River area as I have some landowner contacts I can give you. Thanks again guys. I'll post some better pics as soon as they are sent to me. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter, I use a canon digital elph (4.0 MPI think) Got it from air miles last year and has been great. Small enough to stick in my pocket when I'm out hunting so I can get those field shots. Quality is fantastic as you can see. I did some research before hand and found out Canon uses pretty much the best lenses in the industry. LOL I heard about that this morning and couldn't believe it. Maybe they are trying to keep all the gophers out of the province. Pretty stupid if you ask me. I agree,it'll be 50/50 in the stands, let's hope it's not a blowout but entertaining.
p.s what type of 7mm you shooting? Sask, thanks for the offer but I'm headed up around Lac La Biche area. Been doing that trek for a few years now...but I might take you up on that offer in the future. Always good to see new places and meet other good guy's. I'd love to see the mount when it's doe...post a pic. Did you get any field pics or too dark? |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD, I picked mine as aprize for sales contest (3/4 years ago)it also is a Canon but 3.2 (A70 I think..). It's pretty small as well but find it to be very finnicky with steady hands( something maybe I need to work on or figure out)and with higher digital zoom becomes grainy, as my picture of the yearlings shows. Have been thinking about upgrading have a lot of Aeroplan miles to use before next year so have to see what they have listed and do some comparing. Thanks for the info!!
700 BDL LH'er wood comb stock, detachable mag, chambered in a 7mm rem mag with Zeiss 3.5x10x44 held on by Leupold DD rings/bases. Has got the usual tweaks bedded, pillars, aftermarket grind to fit recoil pad(Sims now)and trigger dropped to 3lb crisp/clean break. Aren't you shooting a 7mm rem mag..can't recall make [&:](browning comes to mind). I agree re: the match up, all we ask is it is enjoyable and comes down to the final plays. Blow is no fun on either side of the cheer coin when it comes to playoff action IMO. Saskabush, do you have an idea who you may get to mount your deer? If not let me know. Owen Arthur inWarmen works with Tundra(Steve/owner/founder lives in Weyburn)does very nice work. Here is a pic of my partners whitetail mountfrom a few years ago, which Owen did for him.Owen also does the Hansen replica's, include Milos display deer. Very good guy and awesome artist, his house is worth the trip alone to check out hiswork. ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Good luck in La Biche JD, I've always heard it an awesome area for whitetails.
Skeeter, I have not decided yet who to take him to. I would appreciate any suggestions or contacts you may have. I'm open to taking him to someone around S'toon as I head that way fairly frequently anyways. Above all I want quality over convenience and it looks like the guy you mentioned does nice work. I dug out a tape measure at lunch and came up with 171 gross, net 159 non-typical. That said, I really don't know what i'm doing (just what the B+C websitecould tell me) so there would likely be some changes if I were to get it done by a real measurer. The gross typical frame (outside beam on the right antler) was 138 net 125. all the extras added up to around 32 inches. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskabush,
Check out the following Brian Dobson Artistic Taxidermy in Edmonton does absolutely amazing work but be prepared to wait a while. http://www.artistic-taxidermy.com/ I love Owen's work what more can I say. While Dobson is the creme ela creme Owen does a top shelf job as well. His wait time will be upto a year in most cases. I can't seem to find his number quickly but you can email Tundra. I'll keep looking and send ityour waywhenI find[:@]. Should really get him on speed dial as I hope to hand him a couple deer this year;)!! Or is that putting the cart before the horse? Wives are a tricky bunch, well at least mine[:o]. http://www.teamtundra.ca/ Both attention to detail is spectacular IMHO, especially the eyes/shading/posturing/characteristics. JD would be another guy to chime in as well to infoon alberta taxi's. Good stuff, the score really doesn't do him justice. He's very cool and a trophy in my books. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Aye, score is nadda, its the memory of the deer/hunt that counts.
Anyone else find that when you start taking 2 hour hunts here and there, you score of those hunts alot of the time? |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter, I'm shooting a Carl Gustaf Custom C/W same scope & rings as you. Never did any bedding or anything else for that matter. Gun has been tight from day 1, but not quite as tight as yours. (The Browning was my cousins). A 1 yr. wait is not bad at all!! The guy who did my pheasants & whitetail (JB Taxidermy) takes alot more. Great guy Joey, but the wait can be a couple of years (even with the quality) too long for me. I have used a local fellow by my house for my last 2 deer and owl. I'm scared because he's extremely fast 3-6 mos. turn around. But I have to admit his quality isn't as good, but still decent. If I shot a brute I'd probably use someone else however. Other than that, I've only heard horror stories of some other locals. Losing animals, using different capes...scary stuff.
ag...anytime I go out unprepared is when I score. Problem is I'm unprepared:D:Dso I always bring everything now. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Congrats Sask, on a real once in a lifetime buck.
![]() That thing has some serious mass, photos and the whole story definately belong in Big Buck mag which I've just gotten a suscription to and have been reading for years!Skeeter, the "early in" 2&3 come from trouble with my PC and the forum making me log in again and give my password which I've since forgotten. I registered 1200 posts ago and my memory isn't that good.[:@] I'm waiting for Christine to get back to me with my password so I can once again become "early in".:D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Funny you guys mention that whole not being prepared thing. Just before leaving the truck I thought to myself "Should I bring the video camera and tripod? Naw, I won't bother." [:@]Oops. To top it off when I ran to the truck after shooting him I realized I had forgot my digital camera at home.[:@]:( Luckily my partner had his and took some pictures. I'm going to phone tonite and ask if he can expedite emailing them to me.
Thanks again for the comments guys. He is a trophy of a lifetime and something as trivial as score will never bother me or convince me otherwise. Here are the only field pics I have at the moment. I'll post a few more when I get them. ![]() ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskabush
Here's the number for the head guy for Saskatchewan for scoreres in your area for BTR. His name is Rod Lehmann and phone number is 204-668-8169. He'll get you hooked up with someone close to your location. Also for Skeeter 's info .BTR scoring system is and was made up by Russ Thornburry who is and was a guide here in Alberta for many of years. He's now executive director for Buckmaster's magazine and also their new magazine called Rack which is sort of like Big Buck. Sask get him scored by the BTR,they'll do him justice. Again good luck. Rocky PS If all else fails and you get to Edmonton I'll score him for you. here's my number in case 1-780-463-3762 |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey all,
If you get a moment, take a peek at this link - its a thread to a forum topic on a BC hunting website, where a group of friends (whom all hunt together) score big mulies every year. Just my two cents to show BC has big deer too! lol. http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=8146 Read the whole thread, take a pic of that beast that is in the pics alive! Also, I know its hard, but score this deer in this small pic for me: ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Great field photos..Saska..I love the character in that buck..Your smile says it all..congrats again
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
YF/Rocky, ThanksI thought that is what BTR was but not 100% sure.
Ag, the picture is way to small to see any detail for a guess on score. BTW we know big deer exist in BC as well...read big buck and the number of BC killed deer has been steadily growing.Should really be keeping that hush..hush though;)! Saskabush, fyi Owens # (306) 933-3075. When your home if interested give him a call and he'll be glad to have drop in to take a boo. I just heard he is doing the Broda BuckReplica's right now as well. If that name doesn't ring a bell it is the World Record Holder for Non-typical Mulie...Alberta beasttoting 355 and 2" of bone!!!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD - in regard to out of province Canadian hunters - we can hunt whitetails with a hunter host, mule deer with an ourfitter - what other species can we (if any) hunt with just a host? Are elk open? Moose?
Thanks |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Ag...gotta be honest, I've never really looked into this since it's not really something that I'd use. Here's a link to the Regs that should explain everything.
http://www.albertaoutdoorsmen.ca/huntingregs/ |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thanks shed33
YF, Thanks for the info. i'll look into that. Skeeter, thanks for his number. I'll give him a shout and see if I can stop in a when i'm there. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter, just thought I'd let you know "early in" is back to his former self!:D:DOnly 10 more days and I'm Alberta (Edmonton Bow Zone) bound!!!! I'm pumped!!!!;)

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
ag, taken from JD's link off Alberta Game Regs:(see below qoute)
Non-residents who hunt with a Hunter Hostmay obtain White-tailed Deer, Antlered Mule Deer, Antlered Moose, Antlered Elk, Black Bear, Supplemental Black Bear, Cougar, and Wolf/Coyote Licences (see table below) from private licence issuers. Some special licences may be obtained through the draw system that will be described in the 2006 Alberta Hunting Draws booklet available in June 2006. I have hunted whitetails(twice) and moose once with a hunter host. All thatI required was a WIN and the applicable licenses. Obviously the hunter host application as well. I am hopeful that in 2007 I may head to alberta and hunt withmy good buddy once again. He comes to Sask every couple years to hunt with me. I am thinking about applying for a non-resident Trophy Sheep the success rate of getting a tag is very low 1% area. My understanding is I need to have a WIN to apply and then hunter host upon being successfully drawn. I need to check more closely but that was my read on it any way. My dream is to hunt sheep bighorns and dall to be specific, so I figure might as well start now. WELCOME BACK early in...missed yeah bud:D:D. Everything packed, right now she is mighty cool so bring them wooly's. Good Luck |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
early...looks like she's going to be cold the next while. Good news!!! Crappy thing one of my hunting partners jammed on out trip up north. Ah well looks like it'll be me & my cousin (just makes the cost a little more). Looking to go check out around Bonneyville too, anyone ever been there?
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Cant say I have, what the heck is bonneyville? :D
Anywhoo, chased some does in circles for a couple hours with the bow tonight. Almost to the point where I might bring out a gun again. No bucks with them, which surprised me. Skeeter reason I asked, was because if as a canadian, but non-bc resident you can hunt stones sheep, I know a couple spots that I could take yah, obviously free of charge as Im not a guide, but id havta shoot one too! lol Whatcha huntin up north JD? |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey guys, here is a list of my COLD weather items:
1.Skyline's insulated coat, pants, bib, hand muff & hood (Horizon) 2. Polartech insulated bottoms & top 3. Turtle neck shirts (2) 4.Polarwrap face mask (turns cold air into warm) 5.Northern Outfitters Expedition boots (good to below 0) 6.Mittens 7. A whole box (30) Grabber desposable handwarmers (24+hrs) 8. Polyprope sox (5prs) 9. Wool sox? Can you think of anything I need to add, other than big nads?:D:D:D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD, sorry to hear about your buddy bailing. I've never hunted near bonnyville but I have spent some time in the Elk point area. There's some good chunks of buck for wildlife land southwest of elk point that i've seen some good whitetails in.
Early, sounds like you have a pretty good list. My only advice would be to bring lots of warm socks and layer well. You can always take clothes off if you're too warm. Last I checked the forecast for next week looks frickin' freezing.;) Should be a good week for hunting:D Good luck. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
AG I have no clue what the regs read on Sheep in BC.
Early in, the only thing I didn't see but use is polyproplene glove liners.Thin and work very well to wear in combowith mitts, gloves, etcor on their own on a milder day. They don't hamper me in shooting bow or gun. I use Helly Hensen ones (blue colour), they can be bought in canada at Marks Work Warehouse for10 bucks CDN, if you don't have already or can't find locally. Other than that GTG Best of luck. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
ag...lookin for a booner whitetail. Bonneyville is kinda smack in the middle of big deer country, not far from my regular haunt. So I'm off tomorrow for who knows what??? I'm pretty much bringing all the gear and guns. Don't know what to concentrate on[:@]I think we'll just make it a pheasant day and leave the rifles cased unless we see a brute. Good luck to everyone headed out this weekend.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
WHAT A BUCK sask congrats man. That is an awesome unique deer. Hope your mounting goes well :D Wellll been busy busy here lost out in football to Aberdeen last weekend so i am done with that now, free up some after school time. Keep the good stories coming interesting reads to say the least. Ain't been out hunting in quite some time, thinkin bout buying a moose tag tonight and going out tomorrow for the day. It will be the last day but i have spent 30 dollars dumber ways. Seen my first booney of November this morning. Was driving to school this morning and the pig popped out of the ditch. I sat there and drooled on the steering wheel while he trotted into the bluff along the ditch and stared at me. Seems to be always deer close to that lil bush every morning so opening day i figure a guy is just goin to have to chase it. No film developed yet off my first deer waitin to fill up my film on my next deer then i will develop, sorry i am behind in the times. Good luck guys gotta run.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Just because its been brought up a couple times (maybe by myself) about what is open to Canadian residents, in BC:
Basically the out of province hunter must have a hunter host in BC, and then is able to purchase tags for, and hunt, and OPEN species only. No draws are able to go to out of province hunters - but that doesnt matter because depending upon the travel time, all species are open in different management units throughout our province. hope that helps incase anyone was interested or has contacts here in BC! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thanks Hia, can't wait to see pics of yours. Good luck getting that boonie. Boy I'm missing the second either sex tag right about now:DI guess I'll just have to wait till the last week of the month.
