RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Congrats on the doe Skeeter, and I am sure youll find work. Best of luck!
Not a whole hell of a lot here in BC - been tending my bow area withno luck yet. Am trying to do a spot and stalk with the bow, so it prob wont be easy. Havent tried rattling yet - I too think I am going to this weekend. Last night sat for three hours for whities - not ONE. Maybe thats why I like to hunt mulies more? lol. Did have around 30-40 turkeys all around me though gobbling away. Man are they big! haha anyhow, good luck on mules/whites this weekend guys. Ill post if anything great happens. Like was said above skeet: the bad luck will bring something good - hopfully it comes as a booner! Too bad on the truck too JD [:'(] |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I took instrumentation in school and now I work at a medium voltage cable manufacturing plant (General Cable) in Moose Jaw. I live in a small town about 25mins south of Moose Jaw. Not a big fan of living in the city thats why I commute to work, and right now im less than a minute away from hunting, coyotes , deer, upland, migratory.... I had 8 muleys eating off my apple tree the other night.
I'm on here all the time reading your posts, but don't post alot myself. Now you know a bit about me, and i'll try and keeps you guys up to date on my season aswell. So far this year, I've been playing with the bow a little, looking for a mulie, been well within range of lots of does and some average bucks. I use the meat if I have it but I don't need it ( as I still have mulie doe and whitetail tag) so I let the little ones walk and will try for them when there bigger. As of late I've been out with the muzzle loader trying to find a good whitetail, seen some descent bucks (150ish) but nothing worth pulling the trigger over yet. Also been calling coyotes and hunting upland. This last week of muzzle loader my time will be spent with my little bro trying to find him a goodmulie buck (he was drawn in 19). On that note, has anyone ever rattled or called in mulies? I've never tried before and was wondering if anyone else has ever tried there luck |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Well right now I'm a dad, husband, brother (in law), uncle...and I guesson paid leave. I have spent the majority of my real jobs working in Sales and Marketingwith aBusiness Admin degree. Before my realjobs (aka getting hitched)I was aguidefor fishing and hunting. My current position for the past couple years (use that term lightly) Strategic Accounts Manager, baiscallyI worked with the localsales rep.at finding ways to implement new technology to hospital's other then via a capital expenditures.
Thanks fellas for the words of encouragement. JPF, weren't you heading out for elk this year? If so how did you guys make out? Sounds like a nice setup best of luck this season. As to rattling mulies to be honestI haven't had a lot of success, however the different terrain in which they inhabit and nature of them running in groups might have a lot to due with success rates. I had some luck in the more wooded areas with spar rattling, basically nothing more than a curiosity response. Where abouts are you hunting in Zone 19? Did some hunting with the Ward's(went toUniversity with Art)from chaplin area, mostly lopes but did a few mulie hunts as well. That is some wide open country, we did a lot of glassing with spot and stalk the prodominant method used. Any way good luck to you and your bro. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
AG...trade yeah:) I am really starting to hatedonkey eareddeer. Whitetails aremore enjoyable to meit just takes every 4 or so year to be reminded of that fact.
Forgot best of luck |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JPF...I've had some success rattling in mulies, wierd thing is I wasrattling for whitetails! Funny how when you don't have a tag they come sauntering in. Any time I've actually tried to rattle in a mulie, it's been about 1/100 times it's worked. Just once[:@]but he came bolting in ready to fight...never gave me a good shot with the bow. I'll see if I can build up my stats this Friday & Sat.
Skeeter...why did you stop guiding? I debate doing it some days but I've talked to a few guy's who said don't turn your hoby into a job, you'll end up hating it. I can see their point, but I sure would love to be in the field alot more than just a few weekends a year. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD, thought maybe doing something with my life/degree, being around and something a little more steady was a good thing( with a wife, eventually start a family, etc). An opportunity arose, I took it and the rest is history. It was draining and hard to put your own hunts on hold, as time is very limited but I enjoyed it emensely and met some great people along the way.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Forgot to post about me!
Am in fourth year of my Business Admin Degree. General contract single family homes on the side (on my third and fourth at the moment) Been with my girlfriend for four years, no plans of marriage as of yet. Love hunting, and business, and.... well hunting? Travelling is great too. Dont think im missing anything - not used to writing 'personal ads' lmao! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter:I did go elk hunting this year but it was a bust. We were up around Greenwater Park and it rained 7 inches before opening day. We had permission on a good chunk of land north of the park but didnt see any bulls, just cows and calves. We hunt southern part of 19, I live 10 miles away from the 'dirt hills', they have big deep coulees, lotsa trees and bush. Also do some hunting around old wives lake, my buddy has a ranch out there, he always seems to find a big mulie out there, him and his dad both have 190 net typicals on there wall, they drawn this year aswell, and have a 195 gross\ 175 net typical down.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I'm a Biological Technician, primarily doing fisheries work in NW Alberta. I love my job.
I grew up in Saskatoon and moved to Lloydminster/ Vermilion 3 years ago for school. After school, I took a year off to try my hand at guiding spring bear, waterfowl and whitetail. I loved guiding but opted for something a little more stable. This past summer I got married and moved to Peace River with my wife. This is my first year as an Alberta resident hunter which is great only i miss hunting in Sask. Here's a few pictures of "work" ![]() ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JPF, I don't know 19 to well being a rider i do know we spent more time north of #1 as that is where the farm is, etc. Sounds like you got a nice spot for mulie, once again good luck. Coulees, ahthat's what is missing with hunting mulies up here. Yeah it was a wet weekend before elk opened but the rest was good. Anycalling going on over that way when you were there? Tough luck but at least you saw elk, looking on the bright side of things.
Cool pics saskabush, looks like you enjoy your job. Congrats on getting married. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
skeeter: Another crew we knew up there was calling and called in a real nice one, they got him. We tried calling but didnt have no luck, it was me and my friends first attempt at elk, learned lots, hopefully make out better next time
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
They are a different game for sure. I hunted elk off and on till 1997, I have hunted them every year with either bow or rifle since, isn't a year they haven't taught me a lesson ortwo. They get into your blood. Good luck next time
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hia show up yet guys ....with pics of his buck?
Hope everyone up North is enjoying their whitetail and elk hunting..and all the other critters you guys are getting after! Be safe. Troy |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Nah Hia's dissapeared!
Not a whole lot to report here interior of BC. Decent/a little warm weather. Was out last night scouting my bow area - caught as big group of does and a young (3pt) mulie buck followin em and sniffin around. Possibly signs of the rut! Havent run into anything big enough, or legal (4pt +) yet though. Heading out for whitetail the next couple days, will report back if we have any success! Good luck to the rest of yas! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Well i bagged myself a whitey and little did i know it was a fawn (the mom was hiding behind a pile of wood and went running when i shot) and on top of it it was a button buck. I ended up taggin him with my supplemental tag so i didnt waste my general on him thank god. It was my first whitey in 9 years so im glad i finally got one. Earlier in the day i had shot a nice big ole 5x5 buck but searched for hours and couldnt find him.Heading out tomorrow for elk and hopefully ill bag one. Report back with some pics and a story if i do get one.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I just cut and pasted this post from Team 34 (Heavy Horned) official thread, just an encounter, but it happened to me in Canada :
I got out for a couple hours tonight, it was real slow untill I lightly worked the rattle bag. I was watching the woodline (into the wind) for a while then turned to scan the meadow behind me, what a surprise, the big 10pt I posted on the 1st page of this thread was standing there, looking for bucks. He stood dead still looking my direction for 20mins at about 80yrds, I couldn't take it anymore and hit the bag again with my hands hidden behind my backpack - he perked his ears but didn't move. After another 5 mins with no movement I had to try something so I tipped over the can twice, he perked up his ears again but didn't move closer, I rattled again, nothing. I remember that I have a small grunt tube around my neck, I've never used it as a call before, more to stop a deer for a shot, I give it a grunt, ears perk up, but stays put. By now its getting dark, the deer is still 80yrds awayand downwind, I figue if anything is gonna happen it has to be soon so I reach to grab my bow off its hook to be ready in case the impossible happens. Nothing happens, he clearly knows something is out of place and he walks off, my desperate last calls with The Can get his flag up and he leaps back into the far treeline. Long post, I know, and I realize that I could have handled the situation better, but it was still awsome. This buck is not only bigger than my best gun buck, but its the biggest deer that I've ever seen while afield. With only one archery deer under my belt I can't say that I'll hold out and specifically hunt this buck, but getting him would be a dream come true. I took this pic back in August: Attachment (1) |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
tschaef, good luck to you. Rattling is a fun gig, IMO worth the effort just to envoke a response like your story tells.
I'mheading to my ML spot for whitetails tomorrowin the afternoon(place a few blinds, trim, scout, etc) and then do a sitin the evening, just maybe a whitetail will present itself. I have a doe tag as well to fill but if I deceide to fill it will be based on where I sit and time of the opportunity. If the wind is right I may try some spar rattling. Will report back to my adventures. Shed haven't heard boo from hia yet. He did say only internet connection was at school and he'd be limited. Good luckthis weeked all. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Some suprises today but was pretty productive!! Started out on the wrong foot bumped a few does anddecent buck (140 5)when setting up one of my blinds. Man was his neck ever swollen, head on shoulders really!! The deer have totally changed their travel in this location in the past couple weeks, I had to do a lot of trimming as Ihad to revamp where I was going to set up...darn deer are travelling right through my previous spot! Lots ofsmall rubs andfound 2 small starterscrapes. I took my digital camera only to find out dumb/dumb didn't charge the batteries while taking the first pic it went black and never turned on again:eek:! #2 location was very disappointing like #1 they have switched movements and are now going on a beeline for a fall rye field vs through my willow draw. Not one rub foundin mypreviously dubbed "rutting alley". I still dropped the blind just in case.
Weird stuff I got to my other spot, walk in only to find a hunter nearmy blind. I Asked what he was doing?(I was polite..seriously) He stated the obvious "UH HUNTING". I then changed my tone just a little "on posted land???". Brain fart man used the ever popular line "landowner gave me permission". I said; "Really, who are you? I don't recall giving you permission???". StumblePuck says "UHHH this is your land?" No reply was warranted in my mind just a directional pointed lookto where he needed to go and fast[:@]! I deciede heck I have been to all but 1 of my blinds might as well go check it out for a sit. Started with 2 yearling bucks (spike and spike plus a Y), a doe with 3 fawns(she dwarfed the young bucks in body size) andmores does and fawns started to spill out. With about 20 minutes left to go 2 groups of smaller bucks, all 5 werebasket rack holders but nice to see boys frequenting the area. With only minutes left movement in the bush to the N and then appeared peering over the fence. Finally a mature buck I thought. Light wasgetting dim while still being legal but the binos had just enough to reveal a 5x5 with pretty good tine length, beams and spread 18". I could not really tell mass, it wasn't huge by no stretch butassume it was average. When he hoped the fence I noticed his belly was flat across and to me this indicates a younger deer. Gut feeling was 150 area deer but withpoor light andimpression wasyoung, I never really gave it to much thought to switch from binos to scope. I ended up getting stuck in my blind till well after legal for fear I'd educate the deer, dark walk back to the pony let me tell you. Good day though. Man I like whitetails compared to them sage eating/donkey ears/pain my royal arse deer!!:D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
speaking of the royal pain in the arse deer, I was goin to the hills to check my stealth cam and on the way my little bro noticed a nice muley in a hay field ( he was drawn), so we go home get his tag and my muzzle loader. We sneak up within 50 yards, standing shot, but somthing wasnt in our favour and my brother ended up shooting high on the deer, we snuck up on him again and got 150 yards shot, same result. Then my brother realizes his tags fell out of his pocket, as we are looking for is tags one of my buddies sees the deer standing off a road, goes and grabs his brother who was drawn in the same zone, drives out, sneaks up behind a bale and drops the deer, just my luck, i've been walking my @ss of all morning sneaking up on this thing and they drive up walk 50 yards and drop him. Oh well atleast it was one of my buds, we got pictures once I get them ill postem up. ( deer grossed 178 and netted 177 even)
PS- we found my brother tags :) |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JPF, that is some tough love you experienced this weekend!I feel your painwhile not exactly the samehave pushed a fewanimals unknowingly tounexpecting but willing guns...[:@]. Even steven that buck was only lossing an 1"...WOW. So bro is waiting for rifle now or is he goping to make it out the final 2 days of smokepole? In any regards good luck.

Whitetail Down!!! Whitetail Down!!!
Shot a very cool young non-typ tonite, i have absolutely no idea what it will score. To be honest I don't care, he is by far the coolest deer i've ever seen on the hoof. will post pics and story tommorow I hope. Glad to hear that everyone else is finally getting into some critters. Sask. |

looks like things are looking up here...people shooting, missing, all good to hear:DThe sun has set on my mule deer circus with the bow for another year, but I must admit I think I have a good strategy for next season. Anyhow...way to go boy's! Can't wait to see the pics sask. Snow fell hard last night so I'm thinking rut will be in full swing mighty soon if not already. Pics of my weekend attached!

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Wait a go Saskabush, look forward to the details and pics of your nontypical buck.
JD, pictures "WOW" asper usual. Nice to see you got some birds as well. Moose are funny that way aren't they, live where they can't be hunted:eek:! Happening here for years...well until this year when they opened a draw in previously no tag areas. From whatI have heard or seen they are gettin' smacked pretty good in these virgin zones. I too figured out a strategy for mulies, "don't hunt them":D:D. Well at least in the farmland where they think they are bloody whitetails[&:]. Here it is cool, snow is wanting to fall but nothing but a dusting so far. Saying that may change in the near future and it certainly won't hurt to bring things along in the rut! Seeing ML is all but done except in the ML zone I took the opportunity to check out the 7 mag and which loadsI was going to go with this year for deer. Been humming and hawing wether to go back to old faithful or stick with my elk load. So sinceI have no animals to share, here is some paper I shot instead. 150 NBT"old faithful" was my choice, BTW. ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD, Awesome photos, I'd like to do some pheasant hunting someday. Beautiful birds.
Skeeter, good luck with your whitetail hunting. Should be getting cold up there...suppose to be 17 here this evening... Hia must be MIA... looking forward to hearing from him...and again Saska.cant wait to see your buck photos and hear the story! Troy |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Awesome pics JD, looks like a fun day in the field! Cool moose, I've seen the same thing near Lloyd. Great big bulls in a zone with no season
Skeeter, with the way that gun is shooting I wouldn't want to be the buck that crosses your path at 200yds! Yesterday I got up at 4:00am and headed down to High Prairie to go hunting with the buddy that took me out last year when I was a non-resident. He shot his buck about two weeks ago (nice double beamed 6x4)but has still been seeing plenty of nice bucks in the fields around home. He had one in particular in mind for me to go after. It was an average framed 5x5 (so he thought) with palmated beams and tines. He had estimated it would go somewhere in the 150's. That sounded alright to me so we headed out at first light to try and catch him coming in from the fields. the arearecently received a good dump of snow which seemed to change the deerpatterns a little. We were both a little disappointed to sneak in on what looked to be a completely empty alfalfa field at first light. We decided to hang around sincemy partnerwas confident the deer were in a different field a little further out and would still filter past us. Sure enough a few does showed up followed by a 120ish 4x4 and a nice 145ish 5x5. we tried to get in position for a better look but with daylight gaining on them the bucks got nervous and galloped into the bush before we could get close enough for a good peak at them. The next few minutes provided some entertainment in the form of ayoung (100ish) 5x5 chassing and harrassing his four smaller companions before they all moved off to the bush fo the day. Unfortunatley,my partnergot called to work in the afternoon and was going to miss the evening sit. He instructed me to go to the same spot and see what came out. I arrived the field with about two hours of light left so I hunkered down behind a bale and tried to keep out of the wind. It wasn't long before the 5 young basket racks came out and started feeding and acting likethe bunch of rowdy teenagers that they are. With legal light running out i stood up behind the bale and glassed the field edge in front of me. After checking my watch and seeing just two minutes of light left I looked back to see two deer walking towards me from roughly where the two bucks had entered in the morning. I grabbed my rifle and sprinted 50 yards to the next bale and deciding that I didn't have time to reposition for a broadside I got the bipod ready and waited. the deer were walking straight at me and by now i could tell that one was a good buck. I lined up on him but as I did he passed behing an old row of bales that had been left in the field. PANIC! Without time left to move I waited and hoped he would pass by one of the openings between two bales. No sooner had i found the lowest opening than he stepped into it and put his head down to feed. He turned his head just enough that I could tell he was the palmated buck that my buddy had seen. That was all I needed to make up my mind. He was quartering towards me offering onlythe base of his neck and near shoulder. He dropped instantlyas the shot from my .280 passed through his spine and down into his lungs exiting through the ribs just in front of his diaphram. It was only after I ran up to him that I realised he had all the extra points and double main beam. Final tally is 10x10 scorable points. I'm not sure what he'll score as his typical frame is only about 120. He is a very small bodied deer and looks young. I can only imagine what he would have looked like in like in ayear or two. Here are some pics I took this morning. I'll post field pics when they are sent to me. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Great story and helluva buck, saskabush!!!!! Unreal character and like you said who cares what he scores. That is a once in a lifetimer(many lifetimes more like it!). Is it me or is he a 3 beamer? Sure looks like a extra beam on the right side. If so you know the drill with regards to B&C and 3 beams. Again who cares, a realTrophy. Will be interesting how they score that rt side though.
Any plans forhonoring this fella? Shoulder mount or other Congrats man that is exactly what the doctor ordered to get the fellas (oops any ladies viewing as well) revvvvvvvvved up!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME STUFF I sure hope a buck crosses my path allowingthe 7 mag to bark.:) |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thanks Skeeter, I definately appreciate the rarity of deer like that one. I won't be holding my breath on ever seeing another like it in the wild let alone shooting one.
As for score, i'm not even concerned about it. He does have a second mainbeam on the one side which to me makes him even more of a trophy. I'm leaning towards shoulder mount. Even my wife seems to think that's a good idea (I still can't believe my ears). At the very least he'll be a euro mount. I'm not sure if i'd prefer seeing the shoulder mount or the freedom of being able to hold it in my hands and look at it from all angles. I know that sounds weird. I've been told I have a problem;). I should also add a note of appreciation to my partner for sharing his hunting spot with me (again). I definately owe him a few. On a side note, of the five guys he regularly hunts with, all of us have tagged deer better than 150( i think mine should gross high enough) and it's not even november yet. Talk about an awesome area he has. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thats a great buck Saskabush. Like you and Skeeter previously mentioned, regardless of what he scores its awesome. I have yet to ever even see a non-typical, so congrats.
As for me not much has been happening. Havent spent a whole ton of time out in the bush - spooked a few 4pt baskets outta their beds (whitetail) while lookin for my cousins first deer, but no go. Tonight I headed out for a quick peek around my bow area, saw a decent to small four point so I thought id put on a stalk. Ended up only being able to get within about 65 yards from him - I know I know WAY too far for a first bow shot, but I took it anyhow. Missed, the arrow hit about 5 yards too low. I followed them in my socks (really cold on frozen ground btw) and got within 25yards of him, but only his does were out in the open and he was in a little patch of approx 100 lodgepole pines - again no clear shot. He moved horizontally quartering away from me, so I persued him over a hill but I suppose they got wind of me because all I saw were their rear ends running down the hill a couple yards away. I figured Id leave them for the day, probably been spooked enough. As an interesting side note, following the above noted incident, I walked down towards where they ran, and ran into a young 3 point I have seen a number of times earlier in the season. Has anyone ever seen this? One of his horns has been COMPLETLY knocked off at the base. Ouch thatd hurt? anyways I thought it was cool. Going to begin my pursuit of whitetails soon - anyone ever use decoys with scents at the same time? Itll be my first time. |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Strange day hunting today, very snowy and windy. Me and a couple buddies were out with the muzzleloaders, I was looking for a whitetail and he has a draw muley tag. Seen some nice ones of each but nothing to massive, but we did see some elk, maybe that doesnt sound exciting but I've never seen elk in this zone, I've only started hearing of people seeing the odd elk around here a year or two ago. Anyways I thought it was pretty neat to see down here, heres a couple pics.
