2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
As skeeter mentioned in a post form out last years thread, why not start this one here? I know ill have some questions in regard to location for your mid.western Canadians as I am planning another Sask. hunt, but up north this year instead.
For starters, here is my prep: just finished these two stands yesterday. |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thats a good lookin hunting spot there
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Here is a spot I would like to be sitting Nov. 1, 2006. I found it last year and got some buck pics on my trail cam in the area. There was two side by side scrapes under the big spruce tree.
Here my daughter Darcy is sitting in a foulding chair one afternoon when we watched it a couple hours then rattled in a small white-tail buck, we didn't shoot. ![]() Unfortunately I will be in Australia in Nov. and not hunting at all in Alberta till Jan. 07. Robin down under |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I cant wait to be sitting here come Nov 1 waiting for that big buck to walk out.

Are you gonna make it back from the "down under" for the season this year? |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Wow, looks like Heaven! Good luck to you and your family this year.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Fella's...looking GOOD! Must admit this year in terms of whitetails I am lagging a bit, being drawn for a mulie tag I have invested more time to scouting in my draw zone. My hope is to get one of a couple mule deer I am watching prior to the end of ML season (oct).I am also eagerly looking forward to sept 18th which is our rifle elk season, was and still holding some hope of getting out for attempts with the pointy sticks for both elk and mulie's.So not much to show in prep for 06' whitetails, well at this point at least!;)
A couple of set up's I will be using in 06' for whitetails and the ML. #1 - Box blind (dig that camo pattern!!!) |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
#2 overlooking a meadow transition area that leads from bedding(N) to feeding.
Sorry but all I have on this computer at the moment. I'll add as the season goes on! Best of luck to all!!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter, is #2 looking out your shooting window from inside the box in #1? Nice view!!
Robin down under |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Duffy, no they are 2 blinds (3.5 miles for #2) or spots I hunt in the same ML area. #1 is a bottleneck/meadow, that leads the deer from 3 different bedding areas to the surrounding sources. It is one of those spots that the wind needs to be dead right. Although not a great picture of the view (persay) here is a picI snapped last Nov., rubline is in SW corner of the bottleneck 100 yards from my box blind.
These are both goodspots.ThoughI have few honey holes;) that I can't find pictures of for the life of me[:@]. Elk camp and mycabin for example. The cabin is my whitetail haven but with other species, family, etc getting out as much as I would like has been a problem so i have searched for closer places toscratch my itch. PS I think this is a cool adlib to the post, nice to keep in touch and see some different scenery/setups...good ider'! ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I sure like sitting at a location where I can see a good rub or two and or a scrape. You KNOW that a buck has been there and I can daydream and visualize him walking along sniffing the air and looking over his shoulder and approaching the scrape or rub. It makes it easier for me to remain on stand with confidence for longer periods of time. Nothing like daydreaming away and all of a sudden there is a real buck walking down the trail to bring you back to reality with a bang.
One second there is nothing there and then there he is. ![]() This buck has a couple or three years to grow up. He was going to run off when he first saw me sitting in his living room but I did a few grunt calls and he got way more curious than frightened and hung around. Have a good season all! RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey all,
From everyones pictures, I think us Canadians are going to have a great year. I am off this upcoming Thursday to a hike in camp in Midwestern BC for a draw me and three buddies all got for mt Goat. The area hasnt been hunted in 6 years (guide outfitter of the area doesnt takes his clientel in) so I think it will be good. TOns of mulies and moose in the area as well as an odd California Big Horn. I am hoping to tag my goat, and a 160+ mulie while im up there. Will post pics of the trip asap when I get back. Good luck to those with opening seasons in the next couple weeks! |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD
In your first Nov. pic is the frozen river the Battle river? All you pick look "deery". Have a good year. Robin down under |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Here is a pick of my deer hotspot. Tight spot overlooking a tiny clearing. I have a 16' homemade ladder stand on it. This ridge is just criss-crossed w/ trails. I've been hunting this spot for 3yrs now and every year it gets better...... I've even found better spots for stands but only put portables on them. The last picis of the view that the deer get of my stand

As you can see they are through photobucket. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey Skeeter, where are you planning on elk hunting. This will be my first time elk hunting, i'll be heading up to the greenwater, chelan, mistatim area with a couple buddies. Like I said , I've never hunted elk, any tips, pointers??
Justin |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Duffy, it's not the Battle...actually it's just a little creek on the property we hunt. I've seen many deer slip & slide on it. Funny to watch!

ORIGINAL: JPF Hey Skeeter, where are you planning on elk hunting. This will be my first time elk hunting, i'll be heading up to the greenwater, chelan, mistatim area with a couple buddies. Like I said , I've never hunted elk, any tips, pointers?? Justin As far as tips, cow call, get into your position early, know the wind at all times and be ready. If the elk are responding to calling and your in the bush, work in tandems have the shooter setup min 100 yards in front of the caller and work them this way. I suggest getting a couple of cow calls and make cow/calf talk to represent a herd vs the same note all the time. If your crew is on its first elk trip, find some instructional CD's or videos so you can hear the sounds and get an idea what the different calls mean. Unlike whitetails where we are use to hearing grunts, alarm and maybe bleat/fawn bawls, elk are very vocal and hunters can hear many different sounds from them. Ie: barks, grunts, growl, bugles, mews and chuckles can all come from a bull. Cows basically bark and mew but the variations of the mews are fairly expansive. So getting an idea what those sounds are and what they mean will help in your hunt. Don't try to learn or use all the calls, stick to the easy and effective cow/calf as the baseline. If your wanting to bull call location bugle and spike squeals would be a good mix. If you find yourself getting the hang of calling the next call I'd suggest is the chuckle. When calling if you hit a sour note don't stop, follow through with the call. I have heard aweful actual elk and way to go humans...point is they don't all sound like a record. Don't over call, especially the bugle. I cow call every 15-20 minutes, where asI may only bugleonce during an hour. If they are talking I pick up my calls asI see fit. I assume your hunting with the rifle, so make sure he has at least spikes before squeezing!!!![8D] Carry a few sharp knives and enjoy the heck out of the experience. Some of my most memorable times aren't when I got to notch the tag but playing/chasing and being with elkwhere no shot firedor arrow was let go. Buy a whitetail tag, just never know what you'll see during elk season. If at all an interest a black bear tag is a cheap investment and very real possibility when chasing elk. PS Hair standing up on end is a natural occurance when you hear elk talking.;) When are you going? Hope it helps some and best of luck to your crew. |

thanks for the tips and advice Skeeter, we'll be heading up there for the opening week. I had planned on buying a whitetail tag, because like you say, you never know what you'll run into, I never thought of a bear tag thou, I should get one of those.
thanks again Justin |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey skeeter Good luck up there, We hunted Elk in the porcupine forest last year and didn't see anything, but then later in the year we went back for deer after elk season closed and guess what, yes you guessed it elk everywhere. We seen a ton of deer all day and we tagged out in one day easy. I like living only 90mins from the forest.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskbushman, thank you. I can't wait thewife is sick of hearing the elk calls coming from my domain(the basement).....only 13 more sleeps till we leave.
BTW best of luck with the smokepole this season and whatever else you may be hunting. How is your load coming? JD, no beer involved on that trip:eek:! Enjoy |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
lol...skeeter, I'm off beer! need to lose some weight and swore off it a while back. Still have a vodkan now and then though. Funny how when I'm golfing I see as many deer as I do when I'm hunting. I was 5 yds. rfom a mulie doe and a fawn...very cool! Now to do the same with my bow in hand instead of my 9 iron:)

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
lol...skeeter, I'm off beer! need to lose some weight and swore off it a while back. ![]() I hear yeah, last week I had "the"Mulie within bow range(prior to season)and I never saw him this weekend. Monday evening I passed a nice 4x4 that was with him last week in hopes he'd show his face closer to sunset but no dice. That looks to be it until Oct/ML for the mulies as I am leaving for elk next friday. Season just started and the wife is already rolling her eyes... ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
LOL!!! Good luck to ya on the elk...why can't mule deer be aseasy after Sept. 1[:o]
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Ive got some other pics of the deer I saw during the trip, but ill post a couple I have on me at the moment. Ill do a more thorough write up later as well, lets just say we hunted hard for 6 days inn 30 degree heat, saw tons of game, a silver tip grizzly included, and I had my first bear kill-steal, as well as my first elk calling experience. Was an AWESOME trip and I nailed this little guy (one of three types of legal bulls in BC). Im the young guy.
Me and the Moose: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y258/agaucher/SFAug.jpg One of the hundreds of swamps we glassed and found him in: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y258/agaucher/SFAug-1.jpg More to come! |
