Well it's about time[:o]Now we can see that great Stony Plain area you hunt in. Congrats on the buck again and what is that camo you have on? Is it the new Skyline Camo? If it is I'm lookingat getting some new camo causemine is getting old and worn, but still warm that's the pattern I have.

Yes Rocky it is Skylines Horizon pattern and I LOVE it! It blends in perfectly with the snow which we don't get much of here in Pa anymore.[&o]But honestly, it's also good when in a tree stand after leaf drop as well.;)I did get it primarily for Alberta though. It's pricy, $450 but it's warm as hell and water "proof"! You usually get what you pay for.;)

Nice pics early, congrats again on the buck. I do not have any snow camo of anykind but should look into some for this year. I was thinking of pickin up some light stuff a few sizes to big so i can slip it over some other clothes and my scent lock suit rather than a one peice insulated camo snow suit. I like layers and i am cheap.:)

Never pegged youto be thescent lok suit type[8D].

My snow camois an old set of yukon fleece whites, it actually looks cream coloured so dull after years of use/wash. I wouldn't wear itduring a big game rifle season with snow on the ground its that bad but has worked well for snow goose hunting and yotes.

I have chemical warfare suits from Quinn The Eskimo. It is carbon lined like the scent lock suits, comes in a good camo pattern, is 80 dollars for the pants and jacket so how can one guy go wrong. Heck i can't find plain camo that cheap. Need to pick up a new set cause their ain't much carbon left in my one suit. The american style is a bit heavier but not as good of a pattern in my opinon. The british style is lighter and has a better pattern. Goin to start buyin some of that stuff online i think because quinn in saskatoon often does not have my sizes. I checked out armysurpluscanada. Seems a but picked over as well but a guy can still get the chem suits and some pretty nice hunting packs.

----- I found out that armysurpluscanada is only for retailers, they sent me to globalarmysurplus.com, same stuff but anyone can purchase.
You guys gotta check this stuff out.

I found the british stlye on here for 40 bucks (whole suit) can't go wrong with that. Have a look at it. Bad thing is they only have a large and medium. I will fit a large but anyone bigger than me will be sol. They do have just a plain suit with no camo up to xxl. Possible to pick this up then put your favorite camo over top, more versatile this way anyways although could be hot at times. This one is pretty light weight so its a go to for august when the temps are high. As the season goes on i switch to the american style, a lil heavier. I see this model has a zipper and pants. My old british set is a solid pull over and bib stlye pants with suspenders.

http://www.globalarmysurplus.com/produits_details.php?pid=362&cid=56&cat_ma in=1

some of the packs on this site are cheap too. I found a huge camo pack for 60 bones. Great if you got a ton of gear and going to be at it all day or longer. Heck i spent 100 on a pack at wholesale and the zipper blew on me within a year.

Early and Sprocket, nice pics guys. Keep'em coming:) Good job getting the young lad out for some sheds Sprocket!

Anybody else finding any? I picked up my first two of the year today. I walked about three miles in the bush with no luck so I went to glass some fields that were getting hit before the last big snow. First fields had two mulie bucks in it. One had shed, the other was still packing. I glassed from the road for a while and spotted one of his 4pt sheds laying right on top of the snow so I snuck out and got it without spooking the buggers. Found the second about an hour later at a grain pile that has been getting hit hard. I think with the crusty snow this year bale stacks and grain piles will be even better than usual. I flew a moose survey down in G.P. last week and the only place we saw deer were right in the bale stacks and bins. They have double the snow we do and every farm that had bales was getting hit. The biggest count was 300+ deer on one quarter (but that guy was feeding deliberately). Other than that, 20-50 seemed about average, then there was the elk[:-]We counted 198 on one quarter. The poor farmer had nothing left.[&:] I'll post some pics in a bit.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

As promised, here are some pics of my finds from saturday.

Also here's a pleasant surprise from yesterday. I was out walking a new area with the dog and came up empty. However, the drive home produced my first ever moose shed. I spotted it laying about 15yards from the road as i came barreling down into a river valley. earlier in the day I had seen a bull moose that had recently shed his left antler (still bright red with blood). I'm pretty sure this is his right side as it wasn't far from where I saw him. I'll go back this weekend and look for the match.

Great pic sask, nice finds there. I seem to have better luck finding moose sheds than i do deer.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Thanks Hia. Do you find most of your moose sheds in the same areas as the deer sheds?I really haven't had much luck with them the last few years. I might just be focusing on the wrong places.

Hiawatha 01-23-2007 10:52 AM

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

I seriously do have a horseshoe up my arse when it comes to moose sheds. I loveit too cause i find them far more intersting than deer sheds. 99.9% of the moose sheds i find are near water sources weather that be a slough, river pond etc. I had a pretty good run this past year. I found a nice shed early in the spring near a sloughthen found a 50 inch bull that had been killed back deep in the park next to the river.Skull, and paddles were all bleached but i tied it to my back and hauled er out. Then while poking around by the river back in the park this summer i found a reeeealllly nice set of brown 40 inchers laying right on my trail. and finally while home over christams i found a little paddle while waking the edge of a slough. I don't think it is the water its the young red willows and grub that hangs around the watery areas that hold the moose there.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Sounds like a good problem to have! The one thing my time in the helicopter last week taught me was that those buggers can be anywhere and they're rarely more than 2 or three on the same quarter. However, I think you're right about the browse being betterin the wet areas, same goes for cutblocks I guess.
I find them more interesting too, probably because they're so hard to find (at least for me).

Awesome thread guys - I've been silently following along this one for a while. Nice pictures, and lots of experienced whitetail knowledge flying around on here. I just read the whole thing again - you all owe my employer $50 in lost time. LOL

One of these years I'll be allowed to get out to play and get my sorry arseup to Canada and chase the whities around with you h0nkeys.[8D] For now, stuck in this office buried behind a wall of files.

Nice find Sask...looks like the snow is still pretty deep up there! Were almost dry in Cowtown...I'm hoping to get out soon and look for some bone in my spots.

Quicksilver...that's classic!! I'm sure I owe my employer too but when you take into account the "good mood" it puts me in after reading the thread. I'm sure it makes up in work tenfold:D

Yes this is a bit addicting probably lowered each of my grades by 10 percent but who wants to be a keener anyways.

Sask i agree they are spread out alot more than say elk or deer. Especially around my farm we have very very few although they are making a slow come back. North of me about 15 miles there has been an explosion of them again which is great to see. No season open on them yet in the farmland which does not hurt my feelings any. I would like to see the population rise a bit more before they consider opening the season back up again. Looks like we have yet another wet spring coming which is great for the moose pops, back for the farmers. They are not a crop damage issue other than they walk through my potato patch on occasion lol. I just love seeing the critters around.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Nice finds sask. I have only found a few moose and elk sheds in my life as well. I wouldn't mind hooking up on some of those southern big boys lost horns around herebut getting access is next to impossible.

Hia they still have a draw season for moose though, the way it should be done just need to adjust the tag allotment based on the population. Of course that would actually take field research and proper management strategies to be put in place. aka time, feet and resources something SERM is always in need of and never getting[:@]!

As usual I am sucking hind end in the shedding this year a few small ones and thats it. The snow and weather hasn't helped me any. Hopefully it will remain warm here and I'll be able tohave something worth posting.

QS, welcome and join rightin.

Hia I haven't even put gas through theJiffy yet[:o]. I did change the plug though;).

Tisk Tisk. Might as well use the stuff i mixed up at home, i won't be back to use it again. Have to see what the fishin scene is like in swan river. Yes there is a draw in the park for moose, not sure bout the farmland though. North of hwy23 there seems to be quite a few but to the south very few still. I hope they do not open it up in my area anytime soon, too many local and non local people that cannot see the larger picture of management.

Great pics ts. congrats. Yes we have wild turkey but again that will lead me to wrestling college chicks in the ditch after an inch of rain.

Hia, I can't recall if your in 49 or 48 like us?? In any regard draws for moose all around GWP - WMZ's 40, 42, 43, 48 and 49.

They use to nail them in 48 with huge pushing crews, just like you said they could care less about anything but putting as many moose on the ground as possible. Not at all what I consider moose hunting[&:].

Haha still cracks me up wrestling a chick in a muddy ditch, over a hat!!:D:D

QS, welcome and please feel free to join in more. I owe my employer far more than $50 for the lost time:D but i make it up by not taking coffee breaks

JD, ya still lots of snow but that'll change starting thursday +8 [:'(]. Goodluck on your search:)

Hia, good to hear the moose pop'n is on the rebound in the park, the ticks must have left them alone for a few winters.

Tsheaf, nice looking critters. Congratulations.:D Alberta has a limited entry draw for Merriam's turkeys down south but I think it's a long wait for a tag.

Skeet, sorry to hear about the tough sheddin' Are you guys still up to your armpits in snow? As for SERM, I have never seen a bio or tech position advertised. You could probably count all the provincial bios on one hand. It's too bad that a province with the wildlife and fisheries resource that you have isn't managed to maximize the potential. Could you imagine what hunting there could be like if there was the same funding as Alberta (which still isn't a lot).

BTW, thanks for all the comments on the pictures. Just in case you not all sick of them yet here's a few more. I played hookie from work this afternoon and went out looking in the same area as I found the whitetail shed the other day. Apparently that b*st*rd buck didn't get the memo that sheds are usually within 300 yards of each other. It took all afternoon to find the bugger, but it was worth it. I was just about to head back when the dog stopped to sniff something on the trail ahead. Sure enough, she found it. It was 1.33Km from where he dropped the right side. Intrestingly enough, that was the only shed I found which leads me to believe that most are still packing both sides. I even saw two young bucks fighting over their spot at the bale on the drive home:D. Anyway, i'll head out again on the weekend. Here's the pics, the droptine on the left antler is just over 6inches and together the set grosses about 136 with a conservative 16 inch spread. Proof in my mind that score isn't everything.

Been to busy cross country skiing trying to get my ankle back in shape from my fall.Still some sorness in it a bit, am able to do most things again. Sask I love the drop on the one you found I got one in my area withsort of thesame drop.Gotta love those non- typicalls.Hopefully I'll have some pics to post after the weekend.

Hia, i'm not sure what it is but i'm not complaining. I think i'll have to try and weed out the non-typ genetics again this fall:)

Skeet, sounds like you are having a similar winter to the Grande Prairie area. I imagine the bale yards near Spring Creek station would be a hot ticket this year. If you're still looking for places try the farmer about a mile north and 1/2 mile eastof where we met on the road that day. He was having problems already and it was only December. Good luck.
