RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

I'll be in Stony Plain by noon on Sunday, I'm pumped.:DHope I can deal with the frigid temps[:@] for 12hrs a day. I like the snow aspect of things
because there wasn't any when I was up there last year. Seeing them better should be a big plus and seeing where they have been traveling.;)
I think next week should be about prime time, or at least I'm hoping it will be!:)I'll let you guys know how things went when I get back.

JD and Early in, good luck (probably to late but better late then never);).

dieter, the weather is real cold right now -32 with the wind this morning and same tomorrow, however that is suppose to break and be norm or slightly below. Good dump of snow from saskatoon north. Was hunting mulies today and the whitetails were really moving. Lots of yearling groups and bucks, also so quite a few scrapes so the rut is approaching. You should be sitting pretty good on your trip, best of luck.

So strike mulies off my list, tag filled! After tromping all over hells acre today and not seeing a decent buck I made a snap decision and it turn out to be not the best one I have made. Making my way back to the truckI spotted a group of does with 2 bucks in distance tow, the bucks appeared worth a try so I made beeline for where I expecting them to be. I was a little slow and cut off the does in some crub they busted straight north and the bucks peeled straight west. On a full out run away he looked alright so I said screw it, they stopped the leica told my the bigger one was 407 yards. 1/4away shot dropped him in his trackthe walk to him was ok the walk back to the truck not so. By the time I dumped the rifle, grabbed the sleigh/camera and field dressed just about dark then the task of dragging him all the way back out[:@]. UM well not what I had in my dreams but I am now onto whitetails and really looking forward to it...DID I MENTION I HATE MULE DEER!! LOL

I am off tomorrow for the fringe and maybe even head into the forest, we'll see how I am feeling in the am may just head up for midday to try some rattling vs getting up at 5.

Good Luck to all.

Anybody know where this bambi's mom is I'd like to let her knowjr. is running a little late....:D

Nice deer Skeeter, whats he score 170-175ish??

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Bambi? [8D]

I missed one smaller than him tonight! Again, stalked upto a deer, shot up him thinking he was around 30 yards, was 45, so I clearly undershot him. When I went to look for the arrow, I did smell him in the air though - means theyre startin to rut.

I hit a couple other spots i know the does bed, but no bucks with them. REALLY weird imho. Furthermore, this buck was trailing some does, yet there is no way hes the dominant one around. Anyone have any theories?

Great deer skeeter, I hope to get one his size this year with tha bow!

So I lied...1 or 2more posts:)I had to come to work today to finish off some stuff.

Skeeter, congrats man! He's a fine looking deer, but I can feel your pain about the drag back by yourself. Not easy with those big bodied deer. At least you can concentrate on the "harder" deer now:D. Shoot a big one man!

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Congrats Skeeter, good looking mulie you got there! How far was the drag out?
Good luck chasing your whitetails. They're running around alll over the place up here, I'm just about at the point where I'm going to lock myself in the house until the 25th just to save myself the torture.:D

Good luck guys. I can't wait to see pictures of everybodys bucks.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Thanks, though still a bit x'd with myself but thats hunting.

JPF I haven't taped him, 170 area is about right. Looks like the south boys have gotten a few nice ones...thanks for sharing.
How about your bro?

Saskabush, the drag was not fun mile of up and down, more than 1 time I thought about splitin' him but figured just a few 100 more yards. I sure wish I would have loaded the bike that morning[&:]!!

I had a tough test withnot pulling the trigger this weekend in the fringe. Friday a passed up a wide, good height 4 but lacked good mass, after the previous day I was making sure!! Saturday morning I snuck into a funnel area that is about100 yards off a large alfalfa field, witha good1/2 hour till legal all I could do is watcha boonie 5x5 at less than 30 yards move off into the cover. Good deer I saw were outside of legal times in the headlights of the truck and this one. The rut is not on yet but the little guys are giving it a go chasing anything that doesn't have horns but to no avail. Saw lots of deer and 7 moose as well. Could have filled my anterless tag many times over but you know how the mind thinks "if I do what will I miss?". I did manage to get some shooting in on yotes as they were roaming all over the place, 6 didn't make but 3 others managed to escape with just some ruffled fur. Lots of BS going on up that way, talked to one of the landowners and he mentioned several deer shot and left since season opened monday...BOO[:@]. Never even saw a CO patrolling but I am sure they are busy all over the place.

Hope to head back next weekend for saturday and may stay on for a day or 2 depending on how they are moving. I also plan to devote some time to the ML zone and maybe even head elsewhere for a day trip with the rifle. Well see how the season rolls along and when I can get out, but with 4 weeks still remaining I ain't pannicked yet!

oh, was invited today to help on depravation effort.Mostly mule deer but the tags are for whitetail or mulies. There aresomeeither sex tags and the majority are for anterless. Haven't decieded yet, it depends when, who, etc.

That is it from my corner. GOOD LUCK

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Good Luck barett:)!

The snow keeps coming a foot on my lawn.Did a sit this evening, was pretty brisk in the blind in the ML zone but the bucks were moving.Mostlythe up and comers but my 5x made another appearence this evening but this time with more light and with the snow back drop I got a much better look at him. He still has room to grow due to his markings and very tight belly with no real saddle showing, so not prime yet but looks to be wearing 150". A deer to watch for the future, hopefully he'll get the chance to spread his genes this year. Weird part was only saw 2 does and 3 fawns, usually they make up the majority of the sightings but for whatever reason they weren't moving tonight. Oh well was a good evening.

I'm done tillI head back north this weekend.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Well, I went out yesterday to try to find a calf moose without much luck. We didn't get to our spot as we ended up spending a 1/2 hour trying to get a hold of F&W to come and finish off a cow moose that was lying crippled in the ditch [&:]. When we did finally arrive we saw a nice 40 inch bull but no cows with calves.

Oh well, The highlight of the day was watching a little 120inch 4x4 WT make sweet love to a stubble field:D:D:D He would walk a few feet then do the deed in a manner that reminded me a lot of a dog scooting it's butt across the carpet (only with an added thrusting motion:D) Too funny, I've never seen that before.

Done for the year here. Well i said i wouldn't shoot a borderline buck this year and i never:).In fact i never gota buckrifle hunting:( lol. I got out quite a bit over the last 4 weeks or so and saw tons of bucksbut nothing worth pulling the pin on. Saw mr.big last sunday and spent the rest of my week chasing him around b4 and after school but no dice. So there it is first year since i hunted that i never filled a buck tag but i think i just might be maturing or losing my touch lol.
Congrats on your mule skeeter everyone keep pluggin away, i just wish i could still be out there but had to come back to brandon today. Had to leave just when the big boys were startin to move i figure. Here's my buck i took in october. 5x6 great mass on him i was pretty happy, i think this is the buck i have on videotape from archery elk season.

Hey Guys

Well guys the 1st week wasa bust for myself and buddy from Michagan[:@]. Saw lots of deer and shot a doe and a yote but nothing showing up as of yet with any size. The doe we took was a mature doe and had no hock scent at all and the bucks are just starting to walk with their noses to the ground;)
Week 2 starts in the am and hopefully the big boys start showing up[8D].The weather hasn't been very nice with some good winds and warm temps, the weather is expected to change starting Wednesday with the temps getting back to -20:D.
Talked to Early In on Saturday night and he was pumped when he arrived here in Edmonton. I think or am hoping he has seen and scored as he should be almost home by now.Thought he would call cause we said we'd hook up on Wednesday night for a coffee at his place.[:'(]Never phoned me ,so I'm hoping for the best. Talk to you's later and hopefully with better news.[:o].

Yes Rocky, I'm back from a GREAT Bow Zone hunt. Some how I washed your number off my cell phone and couldn't get back to you during the week. Sorry.I got a decent 8pt on Friday that weighed in at around 300lbs,next to the last day of my hunt! I couldn't believe the size of this buck!Jeff said this buck had one of the biggest rut necks he's ever seen, it was unreal! Ohhhhhhh yeaaaa!:D:D
Rock, I'llPM you later tonight with details.Hope you guys have some luck this week.

Well boy's I too am back but with no good news. I promised myself to hold out for a 140+ and did a good job of it. Come the 3rd day the big boy walked out:eek:. First shot 320yds clean miss (got the fever and didn't compensate for the distance). Second shot 300 yds. was good! But not that good...had a decent blood trail for a bit and4 beds. Let him rest for over an hour before tracking, after the last bed the blood petered out and I couldn't find him[:'(]Made me sick to my stomach. Needless to say never saw another shooter after that (except running at 400yds). Pics to follow[:o][:o]

Hey JD, sorry to hear that. It's always a horrible feeling to lose an animal that you have wounded. I presume you did everything you could so there's not much point in beating yourself up over it.

I experienced a similar situation this morning. A buddy from work had shot a mule doe at last light last night and could not find her after following the blood trail a few hundred yards. I went back with him at first light this morning and we followed blood another 800yards and several beds before it finally petered out. He felt the same way, sick to his stomach. We figure he hit her high above the backbone as the shot knocked her down but she recovered and took off never to be seen again[&:]

Anyhow it's supposed to get real cold this week so you best bring both, but include some orange too.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!

Yeah, it looks like its going to be freezing!

Do you think -20 weather will prohibit deer movement? Typically should increase it for feeding etc right?

I usually wear a blaze toque regardless of laws. Hoping to get a chance at both a mulie and a whitetail - whitetails for sure atleast.

Make a profile at www.photobucket.com and upload your photos there! Post them from there to here with the links provided beloew each picture after you upload it.

How big was that big boy yah missed JD?

I have never had a problem loading pics here and I'm tired of trying to remember all these passwords on different sites. I'm sure things will be fixed soon. As for the cold & movement, depends on wind too...who knows really. I've pretty much figured out there is about 99% luck involved and 1% timing if it's a brand new area. Where are you going again?

Well I tagged out opening day, not at all the big one I was hoping for, Ive been seeing alot bigger deer around, this deer was to far away to really see what he had for a rack, I shouldnt have shot, to early in the season to be done already[:@]. Oh well, still got my mulie doe tag. Still mad that I'm done already, I took the whole second week off work to hunt when the bucks will really be rutting..crap. Anyhow heres a picture of the little bugger, I wish i left him for a year or to more.

Aye nice buck!

Going to be hunting in and around Manyberries, Taber, and Cypress Hills.

Have my host who scouts basically every day, so it shouldnt be as bad as just hitting a brand new area.

Wish me luck - im off in about 5 hours. Kind of crazy to drive Rogers pass at nmidnight, I know, but I want to be in alberta tomorrow to scout.

Best of luck to all who still have tags/hunting season to go at!
