RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey fellas, when would you say the chasing phase of the rut occurs in Alberta and do you think this is a better time to be able to get a shot at a MONSTER as he won't be laying with a "hot" doe and not on the move?[:@]
I'm hunting from Nov 13th-18th thisseason,so I'm committed. Do you think next year I should hunt a week sooner or lateror am I good?Only aboutthree and a half weeks to go, I'm PHYCHED!!!!:D:D Oh yea, don't tell me what I want to hear, just the truth!;) |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I dont live in Alberta, but I would say your good. MAYBE a couple days earlier could be good, but your earliest point of hunting should still lie in the chase phase. Never know tho, ive been known to be wrong :D

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
shed...it's actually a little rag horn bull. Look closer (but it's hard to see his spikes).
ag...there has been much debate on this subject (for years) and on other websites. Really I think it's like saying if I go to the casino on Saturdays, will I be more likely to hit a jackpot? Seriously, you can take all the scientific data about daylight, combine it with the moon phases and correlate it to the rut and come out with an approximate date of the rut. Throw in the weather and who knows??? I only say this because I have hunted here my whole life and have yet to see a specific time that they are consistantly the same (especially in what area). Some times I've seen them rutting down south the first part of the month and up north they haven't even started to rub/scrape. Really I'd say it's about 98% luck that the big guy will be where you will be at the same time. 2% is you (or the equipment in Skeeters case:D). I switch it every year hoping to hit it right one of these times. Funny enough, I picked the same date as you for this year. We were about 2 weeks late last year (from what the locals told us) and 1 week early. This is how it works...plan your trip according to what your outfitter tells you (he knows best in his area if you trust him). Pray to the Gods that they send a decent buck down your trail (with or without a doe). Shoot and be happy! Last year I was driving home from work on the last day of the season (in the City) only to have a big mule deer run right in front of me chasing a doe! Prior to that I saw very little rutting activity as I was hunting, remember Nov was extremely warm. That just goes to show you how it's very difficult to pick & choose. Even for those of us who live here it's really a crap shoot! Good luck and doin't second guess yourself, just have a blast!!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Yes sir JD...I see the rackagenow..hes a baby-bull among "slow elk" :D:D:D then!
Thats what we call moocows in these parts anyway.. Was he in feeding or something??? Great photo nevertheless. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
No, I pushed him out of the bush and he ran to safety in the herd. Here's a better pic of his "horns". Too bad there is no season in this area. I think he's the only elk in 100 miles.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD nice pics. That is the smallest spike I have ever seen(horn wise)! Love that pic of the beavers handy work and the bow! JD, I swear if I didn't have bad luckI would have any[8D].
early in, can't help you with timeframe for your hunt. Like mentioned your outfitter would be the best source. I personally believe that rut happens around the same time every year, the only difference in seeing and not seeing this activity is in the weather! It is also my opinion "Rut" is feast or famine, so I don't let be the end all/be all to harvesting a whitetail buck. InsteadI look at ways to be more productive based on the cards I am dealt. In warm weather I get back into transition, preferably in some travel corridor near the bedding areas that leads to food. During the chase phase is where I have most of my success with rattling/calling mature bucks in and concentrate mid day hour doing so. Low lighttime is either spent on food sources orin staging area near them. I mentioned in a earlier post that Nov 15th is my most productive day, this just happens to be the hard chase phase more times then not where I hunt in the forest/forest fringe area. The 18-20 is usually when I see them paired in this area, to me that means rut bell has rung. Good luck, stop worrying about the rut, instead pray for - temperatures and white stuff...LOL Here is a pic from the othermorning of a gaggle of yearling whitetails. This is just one group of them, unfortunately the zoomed out picture they look likedots but must have been 50 or more, as this pic I'm sure has around 20 of the little guys in it.Not 1 set of horns or a mature doeamong all those deer...little early for such a sighting! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey guys hows everyone. Buck down. Got a 5x6 last staurday, real good mass, not bad tine length. not much for spread. I hummed and hawed over him for quite awhile but decided to take em. I will post up ythe pics as soon as i get the film developed. I put a quick tape on him and got him in the low 160's, need to remeasure though. Other than that been teachin alot and coaching football. Got a big playoff game this saturday in carrot river, think i am more pumped than the players. Anyways good luck to u guys i will try and get on here again soon.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Good going Hia. I'm sure a 160 class didn't need too much hummmin & hawin[:-]Sounds like a good one in my books...can't wait to see the pics. I'm actually starting to jealous of you Saskatchewan bunch[:'(]Any one hiring draftsmen over there? I'm sure I could by a good chuink of land in Sask. for what my house is worth now:DHere's a question...if I'm from Alberta and move to Sask. do I have to cheer for the Roughriders? Funny thing...I bet no one has ever moved there from here:D:DHalf of my office is from there though!!!
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Wait a go Dan "o":D! Bow or the 7 mag? Look forward to seeing some pics of your hum and haw buck...lol!
JD, I am not so sure you could buya lot ofland close to a major city with your profits from the house here but you'd certainly be able to buy upgrade or downgrade and have little to no mortgage on house in those same cities. As far as draftsman I think you could get a job in very little time. I know a number who are coming back due to housing, busy, etc if trained/experienced finding position haven't been to hard. No you don't have to cheer for the Riders but when the Stamps come to town with our former golden child you better just stay home and listen on the radio or TV instead...LOL;)! Well last night I tore down the savage for a complete clean job to be shelfed for this year. Well I'll be ifmeeze didn't find a small problem!!That darefront screw in my leupold frontbase was sheered plum off..huh! I slapped her back together with some warne maxima rings/bases and did a rough bore sight job usingda neighbours hub cap..hehe! Imanaged to slip to the range at lunch hour, here is the results: Like I said "if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all!!!"....WTF I am pleased that the scope checks out(JDshould bring a smile to your face[8D]the zeiss is AOK). The savagehas beencalled up to the active roster. HUM DINGER I am still giving the mulies a break. This weekend wife works so hanging with the girls, next weekend my partners mom and dad are having an auction sale so will be heading there to help but may sneak in a whitetail hunt with smokepole. I am planning to take off some time to hunt in november so have to make hay now so it looks pretty bleak at this point. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
This may get the juices flowing. Buck harvested near Meadow Lake, SK with the ML green score is said 245". This guy was featured in the spring 06' edition of big buck with another 200 plus whitetail, he has taken over 600" of bone from the same stand!!!! WOW...E
Notice theScope fing hetook...bet you he never even noticed it!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Does that buck ever get em runnin!
TOo bad I never see articles (or rarely) of huge whiteeys comin from my parts! Lookin real forward to seein your buck Hia - maybe i missed it, but is it a whitetail or mule deer? Either one (ESPECIALLY Whites!) 160 is a gorgeous buck! Im excited for after next Tuesday - one of my exams got pushed up so that means Ive got two weeks of no exam time - Im really hoping to get alot of hunting in! Shoul dbe good though, as even after that Ive only got one exam before end of season, so I should beable to put in some good time prior to season close (Nov. 24.) Do you guys ever find that mulie does band up a bit more right prior to the chase phase (2-3 weeks prior to full rut?) Keep us all updated! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Congrats on the buck Hia, can't wait to see the pics!
As for myself. I haven't had much luck on my quest for a cow elk. I've got close to the a few times but they rarely stay in the field more than a few minutes after legal light so getting a shot has proven tough. This morning a buddy and I went back to try again. We've got some snow up here and the animals have really started hitting the feedbag. In the end, all we saw were two bulls, two moose and a bunch of whitetails. After the elk flop at dawn this morning we headed for some alfalfa/stubble fields we nicknamed the magic hill because deer magically appear out of nowhere at all times of the day. We both have mulie doe tags and before we even got set up we had spotted a small group of mulies. after a short stalk and a minute to set up the video camera we counted to three and shot at the same time. Mine dropped right away and my partners went down shortly after his second shot. Here are the pictures from this morning along with the pics of a 1 1/2 old doe I got last weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]() The best part of the elk hunting so far has been all the kick*ss whitetail spots we've found. In the past week we've secured permission on about 30 quarters, so we should be able to find a few decent bucks in november. I think i'll wait until december to bother the elk again. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Congrats saskabush - that young doe should taste jst like veal! Talk about melt in your mouth!
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
She tastes awesome. The backstraps were amazing!
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter...good to hear about the scope, those groups look dandy to me. Didn't understand what you meant on that giant w.t. pic "did you notice the scope fing" ?? WTF??? That thing is beautiful and I know the Big Buck article you speak of.
Sask, nice mulies! Looks like your season is off to a great start. I'm off for an evening hunt but the weather is less than great. Windy & rain hopefully turning to snow tonight but I think it's too warm. Off tomorrow for deer/pheasants so hopefully I'll have some good pics come Monday. Good luck to all heading out this weekend!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Aye - g'luck to everyone this weekend. I wont be out much :(
The scope fing - he got f**ked by his scope - take alook inbetween his eyes, he must have been shooting at an odd angle and bit it in the face. I did one of these this spring on a black bear I shot - he was on a steep angle down the road from me and crouched my face felt some of the .300 WinMag's anger! Lol good luck this weekend!:D:D:D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
aahhhh got it now...deer got a bit of revenge...lol:D

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Went out to practice with my bow this evening with my girlfriend. Park the truck at my homemade outdoor bow range, and as I am getting my bow gear ready and am talking to my girlfriend, I hear the tell tale "thud thud" of a deer jump to its feet. The property I am on is a large piece of private property which I have permission to hunt - and there are lots of mule deer around.
So I tell my girlfriend to stick around, I am going after the deer. I take off my boots and nock my hunting arrow - heading after the deer I see it trotting to my left, and yes it has horns! I move to my right to cut it off, and sure enough I get ahead/caught upto him. It basically came down to a moment - all mule deer are open for one more day (today) but I didnt want to shoot any buck - so this one fleeting moment that I had a clear 35yd broadside shot, I instead spent identifying it as a nice four point buck. By no means a booner, but probably around 150'' class. I went after him after missing this opportunity but only saw him once more bounding away. He was headed into the mass section of property (900 some odd acres) so I think hell stick around - especially with the amount of does around and the impending rut. Thinkin I might head out tomorrow to see if I cant get a poke at him. Would be a nice first bow buck!:D:D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
AG, To answer your mulie doe's question about banding or grouping, yes. I noticed they are really start to break off the family groups of mom and fawns and getting intoherds. Also the bachelor bucks, usually comprimsed of 2 dinks and 1 that needs a year ortwo to become a master are close in toe. The big boys are in shadows for the most part but they are never far to sweep in and take their positionat top of the pecking order. Also the ones that ready to challenge are roaming for territory to establish....this to me is MULIE pre-rut and within a couple weeksDoe's will be squatting/dragging their hocks with bucks in toe...LOVE IT!
Very good best of luck to you today. I had a great morning friggin' cleaning house but managed to sneak in a game of SORRY with my little ladies. Now we're heading to thepet expo, they are pumped. So am I...ever seenlamas race?...WOW.It sucks no cameras or I'd share FO SHO.:D:D:D I will report back but I sure hope they have a brown phase lama...trophy IMO................................ ![]() |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Well its Sunday, no pics from Hia, and no deer news from anyone!
Haha I guess ill just have to get out there this week and refresh this thread with some pics or sumthin! Hope some of you guys got out this weekend and had some luck. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I'll be in the Edmonton Bow Zone in 21 more days!!!! I live for this, and I'm PSYCHED!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Early in having trouble sleeping yet?:D:D:D good luck to you!
AG what no mulies to arrow? No brown phase lama, in fact no races either??? Kids had fun so that's all that matters. JD, shed, hia, etcwe're waiting on pins and needles here.......... |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Nothing new to report here. I went out last night and only saw a few whitetail does.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Probably my most frustrating hunt in years occured this weekend. Started off by catching $hit from some goof on land I HAVE permission on[:@]Called the owner and he said he'd prefer us out there instead of the clown who was way out of line. Saw nothing but a small mulie buck and a hail storm! Sat. was brutal!! Cold and rain[&:]The place we hunt was soaked and saw barely any deer moving. Saw a few pheasants so after getting the chills we decided to get the shotguns. I didn't even point my gun at one!! Either the wrong side of the bush or too far away:(I've never been skunked in my life on opening weekend, guess there's a first for everything. Anyhow...work sucks and my hunting was just as bad. Here's to next week!
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Early In ---> It is Primetimeb, I switched over user names... Gotta be excited for the bowzone! I just seen a picture come into work the other day of a mule deer that will push 200 inches Typical and probably about 220 Non-Typical. It was sick, taken in the bowzone!
I am sick with myself, havent even been scouting in the zone yet... havent really hunted much at all, lost permission this year and now Im on the search for new grounds... G'Luck |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
After yesterdays bad day at work I was lucky enough to have a lady ram her minivan into my new truck[:@]Man is life kicking me in the nut$ right now...
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Ouch, rough day. How's the Tacoma feeling?[:@]
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
anybody try rattling yet?? I was thinking about giving it a go this weekend.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
It's feeling about $2500 under the weather:(
I'm looking at doing myself some rattling this weekend. I'll let you know how I made out (hopefully better than last). |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
yikes![:'(]front or back? Terrible way for a truck to lose it's virginity.
I Tried a little rattling on sunday with no luck. Probably a little early yet. It's suposed to cool off this weekend so hopefully that will help. good luck. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
OUCH, sorry to hear about your accident. I trust your ok JD? Then again maybe you require some healing time (long wekkend perhaps??)...has potential to be milked;).
I am having a aweful week as well. Had a meeting with thetop fellas yesterday, i'll skip the details but it was basically move to head office in TO or we will not be renewing your contract (expires in Dec.). I looked him in the eye and said as of tomorrow noon I am on holidays, I'll let you know my decision in a couple weeks. I have 8 weeks in the bank (been with this company in one capacity or another for over 12 years). So I guessmy new handle is"jobless in sask" b/cwe ain't moving to TO...[&:].The wife isin total agreement and said "hey why don't you head out hunting this evening to help clear your head?"....I SAID PARDON...WELL I......LOSE IT/SNAP. OKwhile I was speechless in our 16 plus year relation for the first time, I nod and promotely head to the mans room(basement) to get the heck out of dodge before the sheriff realizes what she said.......................:D:D I think I'llgive the mulies one last go with the ML tonight(still have a horn and ear tag to fill). Imay try some rattling this evening and will let you know. What a week no lama races or even brown phase, JD gets T-boned, I will be standing on the corner with a can and nobody is getting her done in the field. Really how much worse could it be:D...haha. Later all and good luck in life in general, seems we need it this year[&:] |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Bummer about the jobSkeeter. If I were in the same position I would stay put too. It's bad enough to be out of a job but to disrupt the whole family for a transfer you don't really want doesn't seem to make sense. Good luck sorting things out. Maybe tonite will be the night you whack the big one and turn everybody's luck around:). I sense a Big Buck Magazine article with the "the buck worth quitting your job for" in it;)
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
disrupt the whole family for a transfer you don't really want doesn't seem to make sense. Tonight was good, though I never got away in time to setup for rattling as the wife and I instead had coffee with Dad. I did manage to get out for one last crack with ML for mulies though. Isaw6 mulie bucks, 3 whitetail (1 that wasdecent 5x5) nothing I wanted to use my either tags on.I deceided I'd fill my remaining mulie doe tag as I had a small group of does working towards me nearing the end of legal.A nice mature doe gave me a broadside shotinside 100 yards, whapthrough the top of the heart/bottom of the lungs. She's getting a little stinky,in this group of 7 not one fawn in the mix all were 2-4 year old does. Where are the big boys??? Must be laying low for the days ahead, rubs have really popped up in the past week in this location, way more than last week. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I hear ya on the stinky does. the one i shot last week was no bouquet of roses[:'(]. Still tastes good:)Congrats on knocking one down. By chance are you hunting 29E?
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskabush, I thought she'd still be ok but not. I don't get whymulies get so stinky as rut approaches, I have yet to have a stinky whitetail but mulies[:'(].The hams area bit strongso I'll debone them for jerky, backstraps should be alright I recon. My first one at the start of the month was JFL, no smell and tender.Yeah 29E...zone is not what it used to be, at least around "RUDY".
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I got smoked in the side as she was trying to back up. Hit the gas instead of the brake[:@]barely inderstood her...very heavy Chinese accent! Oh well at least I'm ok and it doesn't look too bad. Just bad tiing more than anything!
Skeeter, sorry to hear about the job...sounds like you did the right thing and I'm sure you'll do fine. Good call on taking holidays now though! Good job on the doe, agood huntalways clears my head too. Obviously you married a good woman! Just for the sake of discussion, what do all you guy's do for a living? Myself...I run the design & drafting dept. at a little (oil & gas) engineering firm. Been here for just over 14 years. Wow has time flown! I remember starting as a jr. out of school, now look at me:D:D. I'm ready for retirement almost. |
