No deer...my cousin tries his new 7mm reloads on the next best thing.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
My point of view when the big guy walked out. Came from the right bush, first shot missed before the tree in the cut, second hit. This will be burned in my memory for a long time[:@][:'(]

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Last sgn of him...no more blood trail and his tracks got lost on multiple trails. I still can't figure out where I hit him. Blood down the right front arm. I shot him from the left side. I'm guessing I hit the brisket and just didn't get him in a vital anywhere...any thoughts guys?

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Went back to the same spot, sat for a couple hours, stood up to take a leak and these 2 bulls were 30 yds behind me. I didn't even hear them come out. They didn't even care I was there. Man I've seen more moose this year then ever. Never even tried to hunt them since I don't have the right equipment. Looks like I might have to start putting in draws. I might see more deer then:DAnyhow, trip was good (except for the losing the deer thing). Hope you guy's enjoyed the pics.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Good stuff guys.
JD that sucks looks like you may have either clipped the lower leg with the bright red spray. Take solice that if that indeed was the result he'll be fine. Don't have a ton of time now but we knocked down a few critters north(excluding a cow elk!). I managed to shoot a dink in the forest on my second tag - 4x5 small tines, but decent beams and mass...great sausage buck for my sister. I also filled my doe tag.. I'll be back after work |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Great pics as usual jd, that settles it i am goin after a good digital camera over the holidays. As for the wound i kinda go along with what skeeter said. I had a buck once i cracked from quite a distance but i thought i was good for it.Once i got on the blood trail i began to question my shot and replay it in my mind. The blood was not very high up and was only on the right side. The deer was showing me the otherside when i had shot and after studying the track more often i came to the conclusion that he was angling away i shot underneath and clipped the other front leg. Made me sick because it was a shot i have made several times b4 but mis judged distance and blew it. I looked several weeks after in that area for magpies and yotes but nothing. Hard to say if he made it or not. Here is an interesting pic of my elk from this yeaqr with her broken leg, seemed to heal up not to bad. Would be interesting to know how her leg got broke. Skeeter congrats on your deer, keep on keepin on.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
My money's on a leg shot too. With any luck he'll pull through and you'll get him next year.
Congrats Skeeter! looking forward to the pics. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Man you guys out west have it all. IMO this is by far the best topic....every post is great. Lots of great stories and pics....I sure wish a Maritimer (me) could get out there hunting Whitetails someday.
Keep up the good work guys, this is all I have as our deer season has ended We had the best season ever.....3 out of 4 tags filled. I could have filled mine as I had a doe tag but decided I wasn't shooting a doe after 3 deer were already in the deep freeze. I hunted a field that had 4 scraps on one side of it along with 1 tree rub all made within the last week of deer season but never got a chance to get my crosshairs on him........he should be there for next season. the weather was way too warm the last week which didnt' help matters at all. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter, how are those pictures coming?;)
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Here's what the bucks escaped this year. The ol gurl is a unit now with that bipod on er. Looking forward to some long range yote sniping over the holidays.

Hia the SNIPER:D!!
Saskabush, been busy working during the day and by night cutting meat. all in hopes of braving the elements tomorrow for a go. I never took any pictures, so waiting on the others to send me some. I snapped a pic of my dink and doe capes just now. Hope your happy:)....man it is cool here today[:@]! I am hearing rut is in high gear around these parts(any way). Haven't decieded what I may do tomorrow if I go - between blind and smokepole and rifle somewhere(maybe back to the cabin for just a day trip, fireplace to snuggle up to seems inviting to take the bone chill out). |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thanks Skeeter, I needed a fix:D Looks like a not bad buck, congrats again! Good luck on the weekend. It's been fricking freezing up here the last few days and it's only supposed to get worse. went out this morning with a guy from work and didn't see much at all, too windy to see them in the open but too cold to sit for more than 10 minutes at a time in the bush.
I'm leaving for Saskatoon tommorow, scouting sundayand freezing my ass of starting monday(but at least i'll be huntng). Hopefully the Holy pasture is open this year. How much snow did you guys get the last day or so? I saw a snowfall warning fro S'toon the other day that said up to 10cm. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Dink...Skeeter you been living in the sticks too long. Looks like a decent buck to me (how can you tell I'm still reeling from the trip?) well done!
Looks like I picked the right week to be up north finally:DI've hunted that -30 stuff before and it's not fun at all. There actually is a point where the cold weather is too cold[&:]. I'm heading out Sat. for my last crack at a whitetail but I'm not really expecting anything where I'm headed and with the temps being brutal. Ah well only 9 mos. till bow season:D On another note...Anyone use ground blinds. After using one up north, I'm definately in the market for next season. I'd like it for bow & rifle. Any suggestions would be appreciated. early...whats the deal? no pics from your hunt? |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Yes JD, I have a bunch of nice pics from my hunt, but I still need someone to help me with uploading. I have looked at "Posting Photos-A Tutorial" and still find it confusing. I need a computer "GEEK" to show me this stuff! I will get them on here!
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Early in
Email the pics to me if you can't download them Jeff. Your missing some unreal movement now Jeff, the bucks are moving like never before. -32 with windchill right now:D. Talk to you soon bud. Rocky PS Thats -32 F also[:o] |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Nice work skeeter
![]() JD have you used ground blinds alot in the past for archery? I used one quite a bit a few years ago while archery mule deer hunting south of stoon and i wasn't impressed. It was a homemade contraption with slough grass woven into heavy cement type wire. I thought it looked pretty good but the deer would always seem to shy away from it, well the big ones anyway. I was just wondering if guy's you know have alot of success with those pop up styles like the doghouse or whatever. They look a little better than a clump of slough grass and are handier but do the deer pick them out in the woods also? Where i was using the blind it was pretty open so maybe if it was in the bush would have been harder to pick up. I have heard of some deer walking by and looking in the window to see if anyone is in it, possibly they get used to them. I just wondered what your thoughts on the blinds were i have mixed feelings. Seems like a guy can pick them up anywhere now even at home hardware. My bud uses one here for rifle hunting and really seems to like it except for the unreal wind we had one day sending the blind to the other end of the quarter lol. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I used one up north last week and it was great. No wind on me which was nice. Could move around alot and not worry. I don't think it would bother the animals. We park our truck at the bottom of a coulee and the deer walk right past. Maybe I should just camo up the truck:DI'd like to get a pop up one.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD, I have been using a ameristep doghouse for a few years and like it. It tends to be a little noisy in the cold/windy conditions but the deer pay no attention to its presence, then again I don't set it up in the wide open or pop it up and down each trip either. It does a good job at concealing, keeping the elements outand very easy set up/take down. For bow a 1 person rig but gun 2 works. They also have a snow camo cover for the ameristep blinds if of interest(slip over). For the money I spent on mine I have no quams but its main use is gun(well muzzleloader).
If you want the best buy a Double Bull my partner picked up one and it is the most impressive pop up blind I have ever seen. 2 guys with bow no problem, quiet, easy set up and awesome shootability(especially for the bow) and no shine at all! Though be prepared to shell out 400 bucks. The Caddy of pop ups but if using it a ton it may be worth consideration. It appears in construction to much better built and designed, maybe moredurable for our extremes. For my usage and needs the doghouse which I paid less then 100 bucks for each (ebay) is just fine. Here is a pic of my doghouse set upfor MLing. |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thanks for the info on the blinds fellas...looks like I get to do some shoppin. My last deer hunt was a bust for me but my cousing popped a decent buck in our Mulie spot. Pics to follow...

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
I guess seeing all those whitetails during mule deer hunting wasn't such a bad thing. We never saw this guy before but he's great for the location, not known for decent whitetails.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Well, me and JJensen set out around 10pm for a long drive to southern Alberta. The following morning we arrived and with our hunter host, Dave, started scouting some areas he though some good bucks lived around. After seeing a number of younger whitetails and mulies, we spotted a very deep forked and heavy typical mule deer. As by this point it was last light, we watched him chase a hot doe into some river cooleys and disappear. The land he was on was private, and the owner had the weekend booked with hunters, so all we could do about this buck was wait and see if they other hunters cancelled.
The next day the season was open - I had a mule deer and whitetail tag, JJensen had a whitetail tag. We started the morning scouting some open hunting property, and getting permission from a number of other property owners. The evening was spent glassing some river breaks when JJensen spotted a heavy tined 4 point in the flat below us. Deciding I would put on a stalk, we repositioned ourselves on another knob above the river flat. Now looking down I noticed another two bucks with 8 or 9 does has emerged below us, undetected. I told JJensen I was going to go down and put on a stalk. Moving quickly down the break, I was spotted and the deer moved closer to the river. The bucks continued to run the does. Once getting to the river flat, I noticed that the bucks were pushing the does away from JJensen. I sprinted to the river in an attempt to lead them off from what I believed to be their escape route. Needless to say they heard me this time and ran closer to the river again - JJensen watched them run, and through his glasses thought he saw another deer running to join them. Hard to explain, but because JJensen was about 75 meters above me on a ridge, he could see what I couldn’t. That deer running to join them was me lol. So anyways after moving through some buck brush for about a half hour it was dark, and I couldn’t find the deer. JJensen on the other hand watched a number of other bucks join up with those does, and saw another typical and heavy 4x4 sky lined on the river. The third day brought -15 temperatures, and some light snow. Me and JJensen found ourselvesglassing the same river flat. After seeing a number of small bucks, JJensen decided he would do a drive of the trees and heavy bush surrounding the river. Immediately upon him starting the push some young 3 and 4 points started emerging. When I positioned myself on a small knob, I didn’t realize it but I was directly above the main escape route. Throughout his push about 10 bucks funneled right beside me, including one massive 3x3 that clearly wasn’t going to grow anymore points. He was at least 32" wide. A few bucks did use an escape route further up river into a different cooley. When JJensen returned we decided to push some cooleys and see if we would run into these bucks. Sure enough, about four cooleys up we pushed a nice buck non typical out. He was about 300 yards away, but I couldn’t decide if he was a shooter as he was moving away from us. We pursued him, but quickly lost him in the mass of river breaks. Later that day we returned only to find him, 3 small bucks, andmany does bedded in a break. I decided he was a shooter for me, and put on a stalk. After about a 10 minute hike I was on aridge above where I thought they were. They had moved. I worked my way uphill to where they were now, but jumped 4 mulie does with a whitetail buck. With two quick snorts, the mulie doe sent her group, with my buck in another group of 15 does running away. I set up and waited for them to emerge on the far side of the canyon. They were about 400 yards away when I saw them again, and after taking a number of shots at him, I missed then all. I went to where they were afterwards - no blood. I was quite disappointed, and had a sore nose from scope bite on that last shot The final morning me and JJensen were in the same spot. I was disappointed about my previous day’s miss, so I decided that if they huge 3 point came out I would take him. He would be a great trophy. JJensen started his drive again, only to push way more does out today. They congregated in the middle of the river flat looking nervous. From about 2km up river, I noticed a big bodied deer hastily moving towards the does. I put my spotting scope on him and in disbelief realized it was the buck I missed the night before. I repositioned myself to prone, and waited for him to come in. He stopped with the does at around 400 yards. He was milling around, whenI saw JJensen emerge from his push. I knew I didn’t have long to get this buck on the ground, and two of his does ran to an escape route far up from me. I thought I had lost him there, but he remained. Although I missed at 400 yards the day before, I was in a much better shooting position today. I lined him up as he was quartering towards me sniffing a doe to his left. Bang. I looked through my scope to see him fall to his haunches. He started sniffing the does again. I couldn’t figure what happened, but as the does got nervous they started jogging towards me. Bang. I put another one right in the vitals, but he kept coming. Bang. Finally my last shot - a poor one in his back leg put him down. He was dead from the shot to the vitals when I got to him. Pictures are below, but he is a non typical 7x5 with a very heavy left side. Defiantlythe character buck I was after. The remainder of the trip was spent chasing whitetails for JJensen - needless to say he didn’t connect, but not without any chances Ill leave that story for him to tell. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeetergreat pic there, white is definately your color, highlights your hips:)
Jd thats a pretty fine looking buck i must say. Nice deer anywhere congrats to your gang. my bro lives in Calgary and was out chasin deer over the past few weeks, claims he saw one whitey that made his jaw drop, never got a crack at em but some boonies around i guess. Ag congrats on your slaying get them pics up here can't wait to see em. If you need help posting just hollar one of us should be able to sort it out. Broke down today and bought a video camera. Picked up the canon Zr500 dv camcorder that was on sale at staples for 319. Looks to be good enough for the taping i will use it for, has a 25 zoom so that sealed the deal. Interesting to see how it performs out in the fields this coming year. Bought extended warranty cause i can already see it falling out of the treestand a few times. be nice to get some scouting and hunting up on here so everyone don't think i'm bsin all of the time, only half of the time usually [8D] As for the huntin i hear they are moving insane at home, jumpin the roads in the middle of the day, full out balls to the walls ruttin. We are feeding them in the yard again right now and dad says does will come in and try to eat in the middle of a day with a buck chasing them around the lumber pile lol oh i wish i was home to tape that. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD, good work man. Way to finish the season on a high. That's an good buck no matter where you hunt! You know it's a good deer when you have to leave the cover open on the truck bed.
Ag, congratulations, can't wait to see the pictures. sound likes a fun hunt! Hia, good work on the camera. I picked up a little sony DVC last year and winter and have used it a lot out hunting and scouting. I hoping to have a chance to get whitetail on tape this week if it warms up a bit. Skeeter, thanks for the heads up about Owen. I dropped my deer off yesterday and had a look at some more of his work. Definately seems like a first class guy and an excellent taxi. thanks again. As for me, I didn't make it out this morning. The old man and I made it to grasswood before deciding it was too ****ing miserable to go out this morning. In retrospect, I probably should have gone as the weather is not getting any better and the roads will only be worse tommorow. I did make it down on sunday night and saw a crap load of mulies including one nice buck. I also saw a few whitetails, mostly does but a few small bucks too. Hopefully the weather cooperates and I make it out tommorow. Sask. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Good stuff JD, gotta love when the roll top has to be retracted!! Good looking buck.
Wait a go AG, look forward to the pic of your alberta harvest. Hia, who ever said "you can't wear white after labour day" was a loser! lol:D Nice haul on the early christmas gift for yourself..enjoy!!! |
