RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskabush, glad to hear and your welcome. The weather is aweful and like you said not getting better for a couple days. I talked to a neighbour who went out this am and they saw nothing but snow. I think you made the right decision to turn back. If your sticking around for weds it might be the day, sound like the snow is suppose to let up tomorrow for a few days, still going to be cold but if the wind dies down they'll be moving. Good luck and drive safe!

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Congrats Rb! Very nice mulie ag! good work!
Things were looking a little better by noon today so i saddled up and headed for the pasture. I hadn't even made it down yet when I was presented with my ethical dilemna for the year. About halfway to the pasture my spidey senses started tingling. I looked to my right I saw a whitetail doe standing about 300yds away on top of an old grassy canal or fence row. Given the time of year I hit the brakes and soon had the binos up and a very nice heavy horned 4x4 in focus. He was bedded about ten yards behind her so that only his rack was visible above the grass. Here's the bad part. They were on private land (not posted) which I don't have permission to hunt on. It would have been too easy to sneak in along another east-west canal and shoot him but given how close it was to a well used secondary highway and the fact that I didn't have permission, I decided not to go after him[:@]. Instead, I sat in the truck and watched him chase his doe for a good 15 minutes, quite a show to say the least. I eventually made it to the pasture and spent several hours humping through it with out seeing a damn thing. By the time it was dark the snow was picking up again and the roads were getting bad. Hopefully things clear up a bit tommorow. |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
thanks jeff
There was a rumour of a very large mulie running around a neighbors property however he didn't allow hunting, but , over the course of the summer i helped move cows and did some roping for him at branding time so he made an exception for me I hunted for 15 days without seeing a mature deer but finally on november 16 i connected with this 162 B&C mule deer I watched him for about 10 minutes and finally decided to take him. 1 shot at about 75 yards with a 270 WSM with handloaded 150gr grandslams. While this is deffinetly not the monster that was rumoured to be running around I am very happy with my buck Thanks again jeff |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Way to go AG on your alberta mulie! Nice pictures as well.
10-4 hia, I have bar stools and few office chairs as well in the shop(kinda like Town Hall..lol)so you can always just bring the lil' lady as well.;) Don't let her talk to the Mrs. though she may tell her to run for the hills when dealing with an addict..haha. Saskabush, that is a tough call but at least you saw. How are the trails/roads out that way? I am thinking about doing something tomorrow, likely my last go for 2006. Planned to sit the afternoon in the blind with the smokepole(though depends on the wind) but not sure if I'll do something different for the am. Wrangler06, your welcome and once again congrats on your Mulie. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter, Highways aren't too bad. 219 was a little sketchy last night. Grids are drifted over but passable. Trails.. well you'd have to ask a braver man than I. I didn't even try. Good luck. The forecast is back in the sh*tter for friday and saturday so it'll be cold hunting.

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Sask...ya did the right thing. A buddy of mine did the same thing a few years back except he decided to take the shot. Needless to say the landowner came flying up after hearing the shot. He was 10' from loading it in the truck when he pulled up. After a while of catching hell, he was reported to f&WL and had to deal with all the fun stuff associated. Landowner ended up dropping the charges since my bud co-operated with him when asked about his info. Last thing a guy needs is to taint the sport he loves for an animal .Hell try and find the owner and secure permission for next year I say...can't hurt!
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
JD I agree with you BUT if a landowner feels that way he should post his property. I am not saying disrespect landowners in any way but how is guy to know without it posted properly!! In sask it is not a legal obligation to have permission for private land, if unposted they can't do a thing legally but it is always best to try and gain permission!
Saskabush, are you saying toyota 4x4's are meant for the tick stuff...lol. I have a Dodge no worries about a little snow...Ho ho Ho! |

Can't wait to get out and use it. -As for the private land bit you did the right thing sask, not saying i would have done the same. I know as a land owner i demand people ask permission to hunt that is why i have it posted, if it was not posted there is really nothing i can do about it. It is a commom courtesy to ask permission for unposted land though few follow it. Workin like a dog on a website for school, managed to sneak in some huntin photos lol. Will post up the url for u guys once i get a bit more done on the page. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hey all - if you have a sec do me a favor and look at this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s8WwN6XnqM Tell me what you get outta that big (Nontypical looking) muley about 2 minutes into the footage. Its kind of blurey, but he looks heavy and nice. In regard to the private/posting thing - I think you did the right thing Sask. In BC its even more private than ALberta. If you hunt private land - posted or not- and get caught your basically f**ked. A friend of mine (this is totally illegal, I dont hunt with him, nor do I condone what he did) was with a friend of his and illegally shot a doe out of a private agricultural field. Famer heard the shot, chased the guys down, they rolled their truck over a cliff - farmer went down the cliff after them on foot, took their rifles, literally beat the hell outta them, and then called the cops. Although I dont agree with the famers actions, my buddy and his friends were clearly in the wrong. Alberta to my understanding you are supposed to have permission on any private you hunt - but my hunter host was telling me the lines do tend to get blurred when it comes to fenced, non posted land. The first evening I was there hunting we spotted a BEAUT of a muley buck in my tag zone - had deep a$$ forks, with serious mass. He was about 800 yards out and in the thick of chasing a doe in circles. To me, my host, and my partner, he would have gone 180-190 typical. Absolutly gorgeous. Problem was the land was private, not posted. We called the land owner, and unfortunatly she had other hunters booked in for the weekend. We drove by there the next day to find no tracks int he snow, and we could have easily hopped the fence, went in, and probably atleast seen that big bugger if not snapped a shot off at him in a cooley. Regardless point is respect the land owner. We own some land here in kelowna and have some trespassers on it - I cant stand it as they are quite disrepectful even though ive asked them to vacate and never come backk. They just about drove my dad off the road when he blocked it with his truck to talk to them the other night. Idiots imho. My 0.02 cents! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Thanks for the reassurance guys. For the record, I know that I didn't necessarily need permission but I agree that it's much better to get it. Given how well used that road is, the last thing i needed was a nosey neighbour deciding to raise a stink. I like shooting big deer but not when I leave with a bad taste in my mouth about doing it.
However, it turns out the point was moot. I have an old RM map at my parents place (circa 1986) that shows the land as leased crown. A quick stop at the nearest farm house this morning confimed that nothing has changed and it is still crown. With that in the back of my mind I headed for the pasture but not before stopping to glass the hedgerow. Surprise, surprise. Guess who was there!:) In the exact same spot as i'd seen them the day before. I got a better look at him this time (better angle) and have to say he's not as big as I thought the first time. Still, he was a very pretty dark horned deer so I figured wtf, I'll give it a go. By the time I had got stuff ready he was up and chasing the doe again. after some back and forth they ended up about 3/4 of a mile south but still in an approachable area. Wth out dragging this on any longer i'll get to the point. I blew it!!![:@][:@][:'(] I made it to 75yds and the doe busted me! I could have sat still and waited for him to make the first move but nooooo, I had to get one rise closer and she busted me. Oh well, at least I got a chance.[&:] The rest of the day was good. The deer were moving early! Earlier than I could get into my evening spot so I ended up watching from the road. Saw another four bucks all come out and into a wide open field with a full 1/2 hour of light left. One was a nice but slightly broomed off 4x4. I think he lost both g3's in the wars. The rest were all little fellas. Tommorow I'm taking the brother in law out, he's never shot a buck so hopefully we can get him his first. Skeeter, the toyota is an off roading machine. Just not with the POS stock tires I currently have on it:D. If I had a shovel with me I may have been a little more adventurous. Looking again today, I don't think the trails would be impassable, just a little ignorant in some spots;). BTW, get your butt out there this week! I saw another nice 5x5 courting a doe on posted land this afternoon while heading for the pasture so they are definately still rutting! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
high 5's skeeter...got me twoof em ;)...dodges that is
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskabush that 5x5 you saw would be off 219 south of Dakote FN would it?? I saw a good 5x5 and a gager 6x7 a lot on that run this year. The land in which both were on are NO GOER's from any angle as they are locked up by a couple of brothers here.
I am going tomorrow though not sure if I'll dawn the rifle in the am or head to the Ml spot. South wind is ok for the morning there but the evening very bad and while they are calling for a possible NW switch in late afternoon I am thinking of heading out in the afternoon with my partner and the rifles. I made a whirl tour out to the ML spot and saw a 4x4 nose to ground so I figured rut is still in the air a little..but good to hear elsewhere. Hey wait maybeI shouldhead to 29 tomorrow just in case you need a yank;)! You'll know me I am the one in the dodge with the peeing on every other truck symbols plastered on the rear window...J/king of course I am not that red around the collar! Ya you need some meat under that machine. I like my BFG's they chew pretty good, yet are reasonably quiet on blacktop. Who knows maybe we'll cross paths, i'll see which way the wind blows me prior to sunrise. in any event good luck to you and your bro-in-law! Sprockett, I have 2 dodges in the driveways as well. Only 1 ram, the other is the wife people mover(minivan). I think young hia drives a dodge too. Well he use to any way! Only thing my truckdoesn't pass is gas stations!! Yeah it's got a HEMI[:o]!! |

Yeah Skeeter, south of the reserve about where the road turns from southwest to strait south again. no hunting signs every 100yrds on both sides. I've seen some crankers (both mulies and Wts) in that little bend over the years. My old truck just about became intimite with a HUGE 5x5 mulie a few years ago on that corner.
Good luck if you head down to the rifle zones. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. I'll be in the black tacoma parked on the side of the road:D New tires will be next years purchase. Shhh[:-] I haven't told the wife yet:D |

Nice looking webpage Hia - just like an introduction for you for the school?
If you dont mind me asking, how big is your farm, and is it your families farm? Great looking buck sprocket - nice mass to him. a symmetrical 5x5, right? Any idea what he scores? (Guess 150?? Im badddd with whitetail scoring!) |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
ag thanks for the props man, he's a 6 X 6 ...and to tell ya the truth....i have no freakin idea how to score these critters... here's a side pic |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Congrats sprockett nice looking deer. Here is a link to B&C for scoring a Typical Whitetail for you. It isn't that hard to do and the link illustrates how to take each measurement, with printable score sheets. (For determining your score the only spread measurement that counts is the inside spread. B&C also ask for Greastest Spread and tip to tip but they actually don't get included in the score tally. More of descriptors for the deer.)
http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgRecords/bc_scoring_typwhitetail.asp?area=bgRecords&typ e=Typical+Whitetail+Deer Hia, looking good! Do you get extra credit for the number of hits;)? Well I headed out today as it very well could be my lastday for 2006. With the wind howling from the SEI deceided to dawn the white and rifle for the am vs go to the blind with the smokepole.Made the desicion toheadfor 29E where I was drawn for Mule deer, as their was a little spot that i had seen whitetails hanging all year and thought just maybe a good buck may be not to far away. I made my first mistake early in the am by going out 219 via Lorne Ave...flippin' train delayed my exit from the city of bridges. I turned down the road to my little spot it was 15 minutes after legal already. I stop towatch a very wide 5x3 with what appeared to beintestine hanging out (fight, poor shot, fence not sure but they were frosted so it wasn't real fresh), know doubt a deer that will die a horrible death and had he not been on posted land I would have ended it for him. Knowing the landowners stance all I could do was move on. My little spot proved to have deer like always but all young bucks. I deceided to head east to check another area, along the way saw a few wt and mulie does, plus a small group of young whitetail bucks. Then low and behold I run into a black yota with a orange and white marshmellow...so had a chat with Saskabush for a few minutes. Was nice meeting him in person, good guy! We head in opposite directions and by the time I get to my other spot I am in near white out conditions. I thought fook it head home and gear up for an afternoon in the blind but then it hit me I had accomplished not much but keeping my arse warm, potentially the last kick with the 7 mag for deer, so I halted and did a reverse course to the tree rows I was headed when I ran into Saskabush. Wind HOWLING I set out from the north end with it firmly blasting my face about 1/2 down the wind row I came upon a deer bedded, 6 yearlings all appeared same size and stupid to boot as they slowly made their way to E. I sat waiting for something else but nothing materialized and I was frozen so I continued on. Maybe 200 yards later in a low spot I pick out a doe bedded, I set down and tryto glass but my focus on my binos is froze so all I see is a blurr. I don't like using a scope for such things so I deceided to try and free my focus ring on the binos, success back in biz. I quickly find her and panned around but couldn't see anything else. The cagey momma caught me and rose to her feet after a short stare down she had enough and started out E. That's when I noticed something else moving, instinct told me to get ready but the babe went backW, I broke through the tree row to see a heavy frame standing behind her(I mean directly behind her). I quickly acquire but have nothing for a shot, they turn and walk up the tree row but the buck is in the lead so no hope for a shot. I figure they'll head E as nothing to the west so i slip back through the tree row, I hear something and get ready she springs out but no buck. Staying on attention I keep ready but nothing. I start advancing as she is standing in the hay 150 yards out which is almost to far due to the snow, still no buck. Ithen catch movementon the west side, slip back through the bush in time to catch a glimpse of him but when I shoulder I can't see anything but white[:@]. I slipped back east and see nothing. Ifindtrackshead east across the fieldbut never saw him or her again. Though did run into a good 4x4 mulie and when walking with the wind on my arse them same stupid yearlings. As they say "that's hunting". By the timeI got to the truck i made a popiscle look warm so head for home. Afternoon spent in the blind was awesome, wind died down and it was very comfortable -10 is what the truck said whenI departed for home at the end of the day. I saw a parade of deer through out the 4 1/2 hours they slipped in and out of the bush at will but onlythe familar 150/5x5 sort of tempted me, though being young I just couldn't see the point in cutting him down just to fill a tag. I also had 2 visits from a 4x4 that is well aged, I hoping my partners 13 year old might take him out for his first buck on saturday. They both know the 5x5 is off limits and if they get the big daddy oh well "that's hunting". I'dbe tickled to tell you the truth but it might spoil the young lad just a tad:D. Though I never saw hide nor hair of him this evening. If it turns out to be my last big game hunting day of 2006 then she ended in good fashion. Had a chance, made mistakes, froze my arse off, met good people and lots of memories to fill the next 9 months till we do it all over again! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Respect for passing the young 150 class - I know id have trouble skeet!
How big are we talkin about regadin this pig that lives about your spot? story sounds typical with them sneaky whitetails. They get quite frusterating for moi! Sounds like a fun day though, cool that you ran into Saskabush! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Cant decide guys - I just measured my most recent mule up and he goes 177 gross nontypical. Nets out at 165 1/4.
Ive currently got a typical muley 160 on my wall, but in the same breath I know that muleys go big NT - big as in 200 class NT. Then again they aint easy to come by. ;) Whats your guys' opinion, should I mount em? If I do ill do it with an upright pose, head turned to his right so one can see that heavy ass left side of his well. opinions?? |
