RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Sprocket great deer congrats. Scoring deer is very easy and the b&c sheets walk you through it pretty good. Don't matter if your off by a bit but get it as close as you can. If your entering it in a contest or something it gets done by an official measurer usually. Big buck night here in Brandon Dec 7th I am thinking of going i have nothing to take but be nice to go and look.
Ag- It is my father's farm, all thats left there is me and momma. I will be buying most of the land from him within the next 5 years. Anyone feel like givin Hia a loan? There is bout 1400 acres or so of cultivated land. Plus all the river falts and bush. I will buy it then rent it out. To good of hunitng land to let go to somebody else. Also most of that land was broken by my Grandfather and it got passed to my dad. His 7 brothers did not want to farm and left it to dad. My brother lives in Calgary so i feel its kinda up to me to take over the land at least. Nice to always have somethin to go back to even if i don't live there. As for my site yes i needed to create it in an education computer class. and my outdoor pages are bonus marks..yeehhaaawwwwwwww Skeeter be positive ice fishin is here. I am all fired up to get out and ice some eyes. [8D] |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
ag, no respect needed mo frair. One of my main concerns is maturity, the rack size is important but when it comes to field judging a buck I look at the rack and age features equally. I have let many 150 class 3 1/2- 41/2 year olds walk in lieu for amature lower scoring rack. Why b/c that is what stage I am at now. Been through a few but asI mentioned way back when in response to Hia's marginal buck fonder I don't expect to kill a gagerevery year as my luck don't run that way but have no problems filling the gaps with mature bucks that the best days are behind them or they just never had the genes to be gager material. In this particular case or situation this buck has a boat load of potential and does far more good to the future living and breeding then hanging in my garage. Would i should the hansen buck even though he hadn't reached his full potential well lets just say even I ain't that stupid.Though hebeing the rare exception to this rule. It is all about personal objectives not about keeping with the jones and for me it is saying I shot a mature buck or I passed a up and comer.:)
As far as the hoss, not much of kiss and tell type;). Though we all pretty tight here sowill say he's my 6 from last year but this year he sprouted a pair of split brows to go along with his 6x6frame. I estimate him to be a 5 1/2 year old deer as we speak so next year he should still be prime if he survives or stays close by. BOONIE fo sho. BTWI am seriously considering recanting on my ban of game cameras:eek:! I think in the spot a few digital game cameras might be very useful. Any thoughts on the cuddyback or others? Don't wantr to spend the money for Camtrakker if i don't need too. As far as to mount or not, that is entirely up to you. I see nothing wrong with mounting any animal. IfI didn't merry miss "no dead things on my walls staring at me"I would have more myself. I am going to really try and get her that bear rug next year maybe that will break the hump !!!!Hia, eye's, perch, pike and burbot through the ice are ALL GOOOOOD. Frozen pond dangling, yote trumping, smoking (jerky, etcnot dubbie's)and looking for horns are what I plan to keep the no hunting blues at bay this winter.:D |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter,
I have 2 game cams, neither of them were expensive but I have had good luck with both. The first one I got was a 35mm stealth cam, never had no problems at all, 7 rolls of film through and still on first set of batteries, the only downside is developing film. These cameras are dirt cheap now, I use this one in locations that aren't as secluded as I would like it to be, that way if someone swipes it I'm not out alot of cash. My second one is a Moultrie 3.1 megapixel. I havent had this one for a long time, probably about 100 pictures or so, but have no complaints, the pictures are clear, both day and night, I've read of people having trouble with the Moultrie's but I have had zero issues with mine. I picked it up off ebay, with a solar panel, battery, charger and camera for 225 to my door. With that said I'm sure you get what you pay for and a cuddeback or leaf river digital cam would likely be superior. but for what I need them for these 2 have worked great. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Ag..mount him! I've had alot of buddies wish they would have had a shoulder mount instead of aeuuropean, but never the other way around.
Skeeter...atta boy! Since I have yet to really anchor a decent whitetail over the 110 mark I'd of taken him. Then again if you are the only one hunting the land and you know the potential is there for a pig, I'd hold off too. Cool you met Sask. hopefully we'll all meet one day. There's a good post in the game camera section that some guy's were helping me with. Check it out. Hia, good website. I'd loan you some cash as long as I get hunting rights there. Too bad it's so far from Calgary. Where's early these days?? Never saw any pics. My season is done[&o]No deer at all! Thats what happens when you get picky, I'm good with it though. Looking forward to getting a .223 and doing some gopher shooting in the off season. Just gotta find a gun and work up some loads. Keep posting pics boys!! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Skeeter, how much hunting season do you have left up there for whiteys? Skeet, I am with you, holding out myself. Bucks still breeding up there? Things tailing off?
Hia, nice web page man.. good stuff! Been cold bowhuntin' here...gettingplenty of snow, several feet in the high country bout 16 inches now where I hunt...whew couldnt feel any of my fingers the other day after climbing out of my stand..bout 6degrees Fthat night. |

Nice side note the wife is a L&D nurse and was working today, my sister requested the wife and she delivered her neice as the doctor was late arriving. To add more to the story it is my wifes birthday today as well...purdy cool.[8D]
Shed in the ML zone where my blinds are located it closes monday Dec 4th. The rest of the province is open till Saturday Dec. 9th. Gotta run, i'll check back later. JD thanks i'll take a boo and the post. |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hia, that would make for easy tag filling for the up coming late cow draw!!! Hopefully they won't get slaughtered, personally think the late season should be removed for such a reason. If they want cows taken go back to an eitherin the second weekand drop the anterless only draw. Guys still like bone so I doubt they would get over harvested and the amount of posted land around these elk means some safety percautions, provided they are adhered too! In our area we have way to many cows and the discussion has already begun about archery or possible even just do the draw next year. I'm more for the archery b/c the calling is what gets me a goin'.
Thanks and a passed on your wishes but she said who the he,, is dan in chelan..lol;)! JPF, thank you for your input on cameras. I used to have 35mm camtrakkers and if I do get a couple it will be digital only. I don't want crap but I also don't want to pay the price that camtrakker is asking for a digital either. I'll have to do some research and watch ebay. JD, if you like deer meat and have the opportunity for doe tags either via draw or over the counter why not get on that train. It is an excellent way to fill the freezer while not worry about burning your either - sex tag reserved for a buck, helps confidence in putting the arrow or bullet in the x ring and good management. We love venison so I have beening doing it for awhile and will continue too. The smokepole area is a joint effort between myself and partner. We either own or lease the lands we hunt, allowing us to post it. The area see's a fair bit of raod hunting traffic as it is only a few miles fromthe city - 15 mins from my step. We hay the land for cash(helps with land bills)and partners cows. My partner has a boy but he doesn't hunt much, so may accompany dad a few times each fall. Our hunting partner and son(the 13yr old I mentioned) also can hunt there, he doesn't hunt their a ton but when he does he asks to find out if its ok and other rules like who not to shoot! We manage it like a hunt club I guess, but have no control over who comes and goes interms of deer, so even if I let the 5x walk no gaurantee he'll make it to next year! Though that doesn't really concern me I do the same elsewhere just the personal stage I am in now. JD, as far as connecting on a big buck you can't if you don't have a tag! You sound like me luck is by effort so be patient and enjoy the ride along the way! Not everyone has HIA's mojo !!!LOL |

JERKOFF's what a complete waste and that sheet burns my arse hairs!![:@] I found a couple deer and calf moose just shot/left at the lake this year. I suppose the calf moose might have been legit seeing a draw season was on as no tracks to it other their her own but still. At the late elk zone the co's told the fellas they were busy nabbing early bloomers the evening prior to the elk season opening(that would be grey cup sunday-NIGHT). All were locals that were caught...I hope they throw the book at them.
This crap needs to end, privelage not a right to hunt for ALL (I don't need to further explain what "ALL" means). Hope they catch the suckers. |

ORIGINAL: agaucher Thinkin about trading in my browning a-bolt .300 Win mag for a Tikka T3 Lite in 7MM Rem mag. Opinions? Was also thinking about picking up a coyote gun - .22-250 - anyone knowledgeable on those familiy of light, long, fast shooters? As far the guns 60 degree bolts on both. Tikka are known to be accurate but browning usually are as well or can be made to be. Both require some trigger work off the shelf and the browning will cost a touch more as it will require a different spring though both aren't as easy or cheap as the rem 700 in this regard. Tikkas mag system is better IMHO. Both use tang safeties. Tikka will be lighter and likely to recoil as much or even more than your 300wm abolt. 22-250 is what I havetouch slower than the screaming 220 swift but a great varmit rifle. .223 rem might be a little slower but known for accuracy and typically more over the counter shell offerings if you don't reload. That should be your first order of business when choosing look at ammo offerings in the area be it components as a reloader or OTC. Though have to be honestI have busted more coyotes with my 7mm rem mag than my 22-250 as of late. GuessI like ump sound it makes when the firing pin strikes and it feels soooo good tucked into my shoulder:D! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Ag I have both...tikka .300 win mag and a remington .300 H&H mag both guns loaded properly are deadly on moose and deer ( we dont have elk we can hunt here ) ;) I prefer the tikka for long walks and stil hunting however ..and this is JMO ...the remington is a must more stable shot ( heavier )now... on the latter half of your question I have no idea....we deal with the wolves here with HIGH power chit ( hope i am not oversteppin the language barrier here ) Not many LONG shots like out west :D;)
But I know the gun /reload section here has some intersting combos for reloads and opinions. Sprocky |

LOL Definately good to run into Skeeter and put a voice to the face and name, good guy! Hopefully i'll get a chance to meet more of you guys in the future. Skeeter, I'll be around sometime this winter or early spring if you're interested in hitting the pasture or those alfalfa fields for sheds. Was that buck you jumped in the same windrows where we ran into you? Keith (brother in law) and i didn't ever make it into the pasture. the wind was a bit of a b*tch but you found that out for yourself! Instead, we went and talked to the guy who owns those posted alfalfa fields on the east side of the road where we met up with you. He gave us permission on the south quarter as long as we set up facing south (away from the houses). The rest of thurday was pretty uneventful. The wind switched to northwest so we set up for the evening in that abandoned yard and waited for the critters to come out but only the does showed up. Firday morning we set up on the fenceline along that alfalfa field hoping to intercept all those deer coming from the fields. It worked perfectly as the snow drifts were high enough that we could scoot along the fence for a shot every time a new group of deer came across. I think it was the second or third group that came by had a nice little 2 1/2 year old 5x4. Keith lined up and made a great shot from about 175 yards. He went a few yards and I put one in him for insurance (turns out it wasn't needed) but we wanted to be sure because of our narrow shooting alleys. Keith was pretty happy to finally have his first buck after three years of trying. To me that morning made the whole trip back worth while and a success in my books. :D I'll post pics when I get home. Last night was a bust as the deer came piling out of the pasture. I lost count at 30 but no big bucks to be seen. This morning dad and I headed back to the fenceline but the deer all crossed before legal time. A couple of decent ones but nothing worth shooting. To effing cold anyway[:'(]. Tonite I went back to the pasture but someboday already was in my spot or at least camped out in his truck watching the field where the deer end up when they come out of the pasture. Instead, I became one of the "orange army" driving laps. In the end, I didn't try to hard as I wasn't too excited about gutting a deer in this weather. [:'(][:'(] All in all a fun trip and well worth it. I had my chances and learned my lessons from them. I can't wait to do it again next year, just don't tell the wife[:-]:D Sprockett, nice looking buck way to go! ag, i'd be putting that mulie on the wall but that's just me. JD (or any of you for that matter), you should come up to PR next year. We'll track a big wt down and admire each others trucks:D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Sounds like a good hunt Saskabush! Howfar in frpm the BC/Ab border do you tend to hang out around? I was up that far last August (on the BC side) nice country. Are your deer seasons quite late like in Southern BC?
Skeeter - The trajectories are a big issue with me, especially since I am going to be moving towards more sheep hunting from here on in. Furthermore the 7Mag has a 140 grain bullet, which without reloading as far as Ive been able to find isnt available in my .300 Win Mag. One other issue that has bothered me with my .300 Browning is durability, the synthetic stock seems to scratch/scuff more often than my wood stocked rifles. Might be how I treat it, as it does endure a lot. As for grizz, the only times ive run into them is when I have been carrying a 7mm-08 with 140gr. Not a good idea. One time in fact I shot one as it was beginning a charge (wasnt moving THAT fast) and unfortunatly wounded and lost it after 6 hours of looking. Regardless though the safety aspect of having a heavier hitting gun is something to consider. Finally weight with sheep/goat hunting is a priority, and the Tikka Lite, is, well, light :D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskabush, good meeting you bud and sure next time your back touch base we'll arrange something. Congrats tothe bro-in-law on getting his first buck...super! Sounds like the traffic picked up out that way, thursday I only saw you guys in my travels. As to the buck on the tree rows it was north and east of where we met, the same area I mentioned to you in our convo that day;)! You kinda got the crapo stick this week for hunting but hey such is life sounds like you had a good time any way. Safe travels home. PS sorry for razzin' you.
AG, understandable with the added info why you might want a 7mmremmag and especially a lighter rig. Being a OTC user your limited with what you can do with either but your right the 7mm rem mag has more potentials with 140grs for sheep hunting purposes.Another option would be to buy a dedicated sheep gun and keep the 300wm as well. .277 cals are very popular for such usage and it might be worth checking into availability of ammo, etc on the likes of a 270wsm. Wiat a minute you said you want a yote buster and sheep gun what about a 25-06? Federal load 100gr TSX that would work great for any sheep. 25-06yields a flat trajectory and is an excellent deer sized cartridge. It doubles very nicely as a varmit rifle as well. I plan on building a .25cal myself, most likely a .257 wby on a 7rem mag chambering b/c being left handed I can't find a 25-06 in a rifle I like(currently). |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Back home now.
Ag, I'm right in Peace River. I think about 2+ hours east of Ft St. John. I've been doing most of my hunting either north of PR or 1 1/2 hrs southeast near High Prairie. Hunting is good in all directions up here, I just haven't had time to explore them all. Most rifle seasons kick off sept 17 in these parts and lasts until the end of Nov. Usually a three week archery only season beginning late august as well. Having the early rifle season is nice. This year myself, my hunting partner in HP and all four of his other hunting buddies had whitetails over 150 by the end of Oct. Some monster mulies out here too but they are on a draw, same with moose. Elk are general tags 3pt or better and are starting to get out of control in some areas. All in all, a pretty good area. Skeeter, no need for apologies as long as you can take a little return fire. Traffic really got worse on saturday. Everywhere you looked there was a truck full of pumpkins. I came across a wounded buck of my own sat evening. I would have ended it for him but it was after legal on posted land. Poor little bugger had quite a limp on him, looked like he must have taken a round in the arse end. I doubt mother nature will go easy on him.[&:] Here's Keith's first buck. Fortunately my camera batteries didn't die until after we'd got a few pictures. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Saskabush congrats to your bro there nice lookin buck. I passed through Peace River last winter on my way up to Zama for seismic and i loved it there. As you go up north around manning and that there are critters everywhere made me get homesick lol.
|
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hia, I'm really enjoying Peace River. The town itself reminds me as much of a smaller city in Saskatchewan than any of the other Alberta towns I've lived in. It must be the people or something but it just seems less like an fast paced Alberta oil town (which it is) and more of a prairie town.
I haven't explored the manning area yet but i've heard nothing but positive coments about the quality of critters up there. I'm thinking next year there will be some scouting trips up there in the summer. I've also been told it's one of the easier places in the province to shoot an elk.:D |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Good stuff Saskabush, nice first buck your bro-in-law shot and cudo's to you both being able to grin and bare it...she was miserable out there. Looks like he has some genes in him, for a 2 1/2 year old good tine length....his daddy would be proud! No worries I have broad shoulder so "fire away":D!
Easy elk hunting, is their such a thing? If so I am in..lol.;) |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Now I never said elk hunting was easy, just that it was easier in that area compared to the rest of the province;). Like I said before. You're welcome to come upand find out for yourself anytime. My door is always open.:)
2 1/2 was just a guess. Could be 3 1/2. Pretty thin horned though so I guessed 2. I'm an optimist :D |

RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Sorry to interrupt you prairie boys bickerin! DOessound like you have a good Canadian-HUnting.net Hunt planned though!
Had a quick question guys: Anyone else checked these new XP3bullets out? I am sure there are better hand loaded bullets, but as I am an OTC user, this looks real nice. I am looking to downgrade my bullet in my .300 Win Mag from a 180gr Accubond, and have been comparing ballistics information on WInchester, Remington, and Federal Cartridges. So far, the new XP3 kills them! At 400 yards the average for these bullets drop is around 18.5". The XP3 only drops 16.2''. At 400 yards all cartridges Ive looked at have between 1440 and 1480 foot lbs of energy - the XP3 has 1925 foot lbs at 400 yards. Just curious if somehow they are using marketing gimmick, but I cant think of/find any. Anyone tried or know anything else about this cartridge? |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
XP3 is new this year, so haven't heard a ton about it other than the usual marketing stuff. Concept isgood if it performs like advertised. I am not sure who manufacturers this bullet, I highly doubt it is OLIN (winchester) as they haven't developed bullets for some time. Though they do make it sound like aOLIN design in the info on the press release??
As to the ballistics that is for the 150gr bullet correct? Fine and dandy if your gun shoots it but not all 300 wm like 150 gr projectiles so you'll have to see how your's likes them. Assuming it does shoot well could be a great deer sized bullet. Though for the likes of moose and elk I'd step up to either 180 gr version of it or stick with the AB due to larger mass and possible closer shots leading to less pentetration due to the increased MV or move to 165 Barnes TSX which will give you flatter trajectory but being all copper won't comprimise terminal performance as a result. BTW 2" at 400 yards is nothing to get hung up over, accuracy and practice rule the roost when dealing with longer range shooting! If you can get both great but don't settle based on a test firing from a gun other than yours and never take the paper ballistics as face value. Only true way is shoot the distances yourself and over a chrony for MV, then run a ballistic program to figure out the variables at those distances. |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Yeah, the reason I am looking at the 150gr is primarily for deer, sheep etc. POSSIBLY elk, but ive never shot one, so I really cannot say.
like you said, and Ive been reading reviews, gotta try it out. Im going to buy a box tomorrow, see how she goes. Ill report back if anyone is interested. I want to stay away from 180gr sizes, unless I am going after moose/grizz. I honestly think a 165 TSX would preform well on a mooose for that matter. Regardless, I am planning on putting in alot of hours at the range this year. For some bloody reason our local range (local pop over 100k) only has targets out to 200m, but for sheep and prairie hunting I want to be comfortable at ranges in excess of 300, so ill setup my own. I think ill have to try a full bullets before I find a 150gr ish size that I really like. No problem though! Maybe ifim REAL lucky, the XP3 will work like a charm. ive heard ABolts like em, but well see! |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hell i don't mind banjo music, always heard ya got a purty mouth skeeter.:D Ya i am really stoked about that states elk hunt thinkin bout it more and more. Physical training and mental prep has begun lol. Ya skeeter ya gotta see ol shed33 shot pool with one hand while sippin on one of many wisks. That night we went into the chelan bar it was only the two of us and one local guy. Was happy hour all night and between me and shed we left with a hundred dollar tab on wisk. Lost 3 years of my life that night but holy f did we laugh. Needless to say not much shed hunting got done the next day due to the swelling cabbage.
Saskabush can sask residents hunt elk there up around manning and that? Or a hunter host system thingy of some sort. If we can i sure wouldn;t mind comin up and chasin them around in the rut, don't need a bed cause usually i don't sleep much during the season lol. Sure i wouldn't have to twist jeff's arm to hard to go either. Not sure which wife he would bring though.[8D] |
RE: 2006 Canadian Whitetails - Get' em!
Hia, bulls are a general tag (3pt or more) in most zones up here including 527 (manning), so yes you would be able to hunt them with a host. I think a resident can host up to two non-res canadians a year so you guys would both be covered. Tags would be more expensive than normal ($130 + $25 for the hostlicense and another$25 or so for the habitat cerificatei think). Not cheapbut otherwise it could be done. There's elk in every direction up here but I have heard the manning area is better mostly because there aren't a lot of resident hunters that bother going that far for them. If a rut hunt was to be planned It would be worth investigating that area for sure.
As for a bed, if you don't sleep we could at least set you up somewhere where the bugling won't wake up the neighbors. :D |

I'll consult some local experts on the rut timing. Habitat is probably similar to what you guys are used to. Mostly mixedwood forest bordering cropland with some big river valleys as well, i'll dig up some pictures and post them when I get a chance. The Peace River Valley holds a lot of animals as it is a big valley. Think North Saskatchewan x2 or 3withmore trees and your in luck most of the beer stores here sell Pil.
