Cut back on the more proficent equipment and you cut back on deer kills...not rocket science is it/ now compounds can hunt from 1st Sat in Oct. thru 2nd Sat in Nov. the majority of archers use compounds, cut that to 2 wks and you cut bow kills
From a theoretical standpoint that argument makes sense. But, when you consider that archers take a significantly smaller percentage of deer in comparison to rifle hunters then it would seem that reducing the rifle season to a week or less would provide a more suitable alternative.

And, though some counties or sections of counties have deer numbers below the recommended level there are other areas where deer numbers are significantly above the recommended ratio. Not surprising is the fact that this typically correlates with the amount of public versus private land in the same areas.

As always, until the Game Commission has the power to regulate the amount of deer taken on private land there can be no effective deer management program in Pennsylvania.

Why cut bow kills? Why not rifle? I hunt both, so I"m not partial to one or the other but its a fact that bowhunting only takes a very small percentage of the deer each year anyway. Now the gun hunters are a different story. Why not make them go back to flintlocks if you wanna go traditional and cut back on proficient equipment. There is a place near where I live that guys shoot over top of a road to a mountain side on the other side. The distance in about 1100 yards. They have special guns set on benches to shoot this far. Is that traditional?

Why cut bow kills? Why not rifle? I hunt both,
Amen to that.

Archers do not kill a number of deer proprtionate to their numbers now. In rough terms, bowhunters are about 1/3 of our hunters but they dont kill 1/3 of the deer. Besides that, the areas with the highest bow kills are the generally the areas where there are still too many deer. The WMU's that seem to be suffering the "coldspots" problem are not the most popular bowhunting areas. Conversely, on private land, bowhunting is more likely to be permitted in many cases. It's just safer in the more populated areas. No suburbanite has ever been shot in her driveway by a bowhunter, not with a traditional bow and not with a tricked out hi-tech compound.

I agree cut rifle season by a week, drop Oct MZ season, slash doe permits so forth so on. But this thread is dealing with archery gear not rifle hunting "Compound vs. Traditional" is the title.
Pa you may recall in my post where I submitted "...in WMUs where needed..." I NEVER made a flat statewide statement.
* Now that the reference to a young lady being shot in her driveway has been made by BTBOWHUNTER for no apparent reason other than to start an argument as it has no bearing on this thread at all . I'll add my .02.
This could have happened just as easily to anyone now that the Saftey zone for archers has been cut. I know I've shot at my well constructed backstop an had a shaft careen off the top or side when shooting from an unknown distance. I also know I've shot at deer with both my longbow and my "tricked out' compound bow an had the shaft sent off at 90 degrees after hitting a small unseen twig. Let us think how easily this could happen when the archer is shooting near kids playing in a yard, swingset, pool, etc. To make a statementr of OH that won't happen is utter foolishness.

Charlie P: you seem to have a problem with resentment towards traditional bowhunters
I'll type this slow for you wingbar. I don't have a problem with traditional hunters. I have a problem with people that post false statements basically lies(100 yards shots) to make a point.I have a problem with you,ok. Please don't address anymore questions to me because I won't respond.

Charlie P : if it makes you feel better to call me a liar, I hope you are able to prove your point. (your reference to my suggesting a FEW archers take 100 yd shots at live animals).
I know this to be a fact, I saw it attempted with my own eyes! And severly chastised the "archer ' for doing so. As I recall my comments were along the lines "this is not ancient England and that doe is not a castle wall" WB

Rather than try and start another rift on these pages maybe we all ought to consider working toward a mandatorybowhunter ed program in our state. Ideally I would like to see proficiency testing before bow tags are issued but it's not likely in the real world. At least with some basic bowhunter ed we would have a start.

We have that here in Jersey.

Glad your using wingbar, uylsses is to hard to remember to spell.
