Default Buck or Doe?

Ive sat at this computer every night for the last two weeks reading all the posts about antler restrictions, deer management, low deer populations, to many deer, not enough deer, and after about four or five replies from someone, we all start arguing, we as sportsmen have to stick together, we are all in the woods every chance we get, scouting, hunting whatever the case may be. we are the ones that know what the deer populations are like in our woods not some guy in a suit, who probly doesn't hunt anyway, so the question I have for everyone is what can we do as hunters about all thoes things. we all get doe permits but do we use them? if the buck to doe ratio in your area is five does to one buck are you going to take more does, or do you want that 8 pointer or a 6 or a 4 whatever size he might be, or are you willing to do the (not so manly thing) and trim down the doe population? I my self would just soon take a doe than not put any meat in the frezer, I hunt in the souther tier, Stueben,Schyular and chemung county's, and as you may know new york fish and game rate two of the three the best deer hunting county's in New York state.we have a good number of deer around a good buck to doe ratio. sorry I am rambaling, anyway what would you reather harvest bucks or does? please be honest.. this is not a debate, nor is it ment to start problems I just want to know, Thanks

If given the choice, I like shooting does for meat. I've reached a point in my hunting that regardless of AR or not, I won't shoot another small buck. I hunt areas with decent deer populations. Some also have good chances at big bucks, some don't(although better now with AR's)

I'd be happier shooting 5-6 does a year and a real nice buck every 2nd or 3rd year, than shooting a small buck and 1-2 does each year.

Obviously everyone wants to shoot a buck. But if my doe to buck ratio is 6 to 1 ya better believe some does will be thinned out.(if they are ever seen again that is) People have to realize there is a big difference county to county in deer herd. I'm sick of "know it alls" supporting the DEC because they don't see a problem in their little hunting world. They respond with "you're not doing something right it has nothing to do with the DEC" or "There is nothing wrong with the deer population in NY"

Stueben county?? Excellent !! The highest buck take in the last few years I believe. Great hunting by looking at the stats. The DEC permits and DMU's will probably not affect huters success there.

Cayuga county?? (where I hunt) Sucks!! among the lowest harvest numbers in NYS. So don't sit there and tell me the new DMU's and all the other bullcrap hasn't affected my hunting and there are zillions of deer still in NY. Some counties maybe not see a difference. Others that were teatering on the population being abundant in the first place are getting killed.

oops sorry this wasn't supposed to be a debate.

No thats totaly right I cant under stand how the dec can say where the population is down or not, I belive the only people that truely know how their area is doing is the hunter. I know that the hunting sucks in cayuga county I used to hunt there, around cato, hannibal,a few years back the hunting was pretty good now like you said it sucks. but can WE do about it??

Love to hunt. period. especially bowhunting for whitetails. In the past 10 years I have killed both doe and buck at a ratio of almost 10 to 1. 68 does and 7 bucks. Keep in mind that I am in a suburban bowhunting deer control program and 46 does came from there. I love venison and am happy to take does where they need to be thinned out. I hunt two and occasionally three states so i've had a lot of unfillled buck tags. I'm very happy to let a 110" buck walk by and take the doe that comes by 5 minutes later. It took me awhile to get to this point and I still have EVERY rack, big and small, that I ever shot.

I guess I took the long route to your answer... I'd rather shoot a mature buck but I'm just ( well almost anyway) as happy to get an opportunity to take a doe as well.

Hmmm funny NYB, maybe you were on to something when you tried to bash me in the other thread about how I was going to say you weren't doing something right. The reason I say that is I have been hunting Cayuga the last two years and it's some of the best hunting I've seen in NY.
UH yeah I agree that is hilarious!![:-] Tell me DANNY ............ in all your scholastic achievements what do you decipher from this chart?? Now take a close look at the "combined kills section". Look where Stueben County is and where Cayuga County is!! Any other questions?? Maybe you need to get out more?? Maybe you don't have All the answers with your infinite education. Like you said #'s don't lie right.

Heres a few deer from Cayuga County, you tell me if they suck or not...
Those are wonderful bucks. Here's a big pat on the back for ya. Look at the chart again and tell me I'm wrong about Stueben and Cayuga County! I'm sure you'll have some justification babble BS to come back with so proceed with it this should be good. You sure you work for the DEC??
