My friend has a house and property in one of the units that has antler restrictions. He surely would tell you that it is NOT working. Very few bucks are being seen never mind shot, plus doe permits are also hard to get in his unit where one is required to have preference points in order to get one. Not much reason for people to hunt. For the first time in many years he will be going up to another area to hunt where he drew a doe permit and AR's are not in effect. Sort of stinks that one owns his own property yet has to go somewhere else to hunt.

We have had this restriction in our area of PA since 2002.
I will say we definitely have more and bigger bucks. But we also have a lot more mature bucks with sub-par antlers.
I would say the benefits out-weigh the gains since more bucks reach maturity. But it does let a lot of the inferior bucks keep their bloodline going.

I live right on the border of NY and NJ(zone3) NJ has had 3point ARs for at least 8 years now, NY does not. I have hunted state land on both sides and I can assure you the NJ deer are no bigger. You can see it for yourself in the NJ outstanding deer program record books. Very few entrys at all for that zone.

They should get rid of it. The responsibility of the state is to manage deer populations and not the points on a bucks head when he gets shot by a hunter. More hunters are happy with any deer they shoot then there are trophy hunters who push for laws like this. The trophy hunters typically try to tell us to shoot a doe instead and let the little bucks walk. Yes that would be an idea, but try to tell this to the people in one of these AR units where you can hardly get a doe permit in! I guess these people should go out hunting just to get some fresh air since any deer they do see won't be legal to shoot??

I hunt in these areas and see no differents after 4 years.I'm in the woods a lot.I did take a nice 10 pt last year but we seen some even before the 3pt rule.Still see a bunch of scrub bucks. My take is sure I like to shoot a nice buck as well as the next guy,but would like to make that decsion for myself.Last bow season I passed on 6 bucks that were in range one nice 4pt that I would have taken. Were I hunt is over 200ac and with all the small bucks we passed on sould be loaded with racks after 4 years...Ed

It all depends on where you hunt. We hunt on private land, put the restrictions on ourselves in Port Jervis, and we've noticed bigger deer taken. We're not allowed to shoot does, at all. We have 25 hunters and we're averaging 17 deer a year, same for the past 10 years, but the bucks are ranging from 6 to 8 pts. Guys are seeing a lot of spikes and 4's, and it's great letting em go. Granted, if your a meat hunter, points don't matter. But all our guys are saying it has worked. Now if I can only convince em to put in some food plots.

I hunt in central NY.
Have passed 5 different 6 to 8 pointers this year (along with several spikes and forks) that I am am sure where 1 1/2 old bucks. Under 3 pt/side AR they would have all been legal and able to be killed as 1 1/2 - same age as the spikes. Hard to find ANY logic in that.
