In the past few years our numbers have been alot lower but enough deer to keep your interest.By that I mean seeing two or three a day. However last year we had snow cover from the first day of rifle to the last day. They stuck out like a sore thumb in the laurel and pine thickets.Deer you normally didn't see were easily seen with the snow cover. As a result so far this spring/summer has shown the least amount of deer or deer sign I've ever seen.
Might have to grab a hold of the pocket book this year and do alot of driving/scouting looking for some decent spots in the mosh state forest. That's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
It's not unusual to have snow during the second week of the season.I thought the conditions were unfavorable in Moshannon state forest that week. The snow was extremely crunchy, making it hard to even get on stand without booting every deer within several hundred yards.I saw alot of deer both sarurday of the season, very few hunters and heard very little shoting.I can't imagine you'd think there were less deer in 2G right now than in past years.Sometimes you boggle my mind rich.

There are plenty of good spots in Moshannon state forest.Stay off of Rocton mountain and you'll find plenty of deer.

Maybe it's because the PGC claims the 2006 harvest reduced the 2007 heard by 27%. Therefore there is no reason to believe the herd increased in 2008 or 2009 since the doe allocations remained at 26K.

I boggle my wife's mind too Doug.
My post didn't represent 2G as a whole but our immediate area that actually borders 2g.In the snow last year the first thing I noticed was the way the deer stuck out in the thick laurel.I watched deer go through from a treestand that without snow I would have never seen. The numbers were down before last season but with the two week snow cover and last year's harvests it seems numbers this year are lower then I probably ever saw.The ridge behind us was recently timbered and it seemed the deer were drawn to that area.Normally it's thick enough for most to sneak through but last year easy pickins.
This ridge is posted but gets hunted heavily.I know the area very well Doug and spend loads of time scouting/hunting so I have a good feel for the deer numbers and harvests.I don't go near rockton mountain to hunt so that's not even an option.
In our hunting area food usually isn't an issue because of the farms/woodlots.The land owner behind us grows corn specifically for the critters and the farms mostly plant rye.Browse consists of plenty of red maple, sasafrass, multiflora rose,dogwoods,oaks,grasses,wildflowers.etc.We have hard and soft mast also.Too much hunting pressure and harvests affect our numbers and as I said two weeks of snow cover didn't help.

Had there been more hunters around the deer you booted Doug would have been killed.

Rich, areas with alot of pressure will always see higher harvests. That's the way it's always been and always will be.I hunt public land in 2G that has very easy access for the most part.I rarely ever see another hunter. After the first day,I have the woods to myself, even on the saturdays.

That was my original point Doug. The snow cover made for easier hunting where pressure is high, being our area.
Sometimes Doug you boggle my mind.

Snow is fairly common during deer season Rich.If anything conditions were much worse last year. The snow was extremely crunchy and many of the state forests roads were all but impassable.Lot's of deer were spared accross the WMU

Default deer all over.,

i went for ride about 2 miles from my home.i saw around 35 deer.never saw so many but i can explain some of it.we are patrolling our areas now do to no wco locally here in western clinton county.we have stopped many poachers lately but they are not giving up.this area is all private with fields etc.

nunney went on up past the privateland and went about 10 miles on SFL and did not see a deer.........out of 35 i saw about 12 bucks and about 8 fawns in group.bill and co-op did not kill a doe last year.from what i am seeing it made a big impact on the number of deer.last year in same area i saw about 12 deer best i can remember.

i have real big buck in my yard and headlights at 1 am is not so pleasant.i got look at these birds and anyone of them would shoot that buck, they are at it already getting ready to poach for HORNS...LATEST RUMOR IS THEY TAKE A HEAVY PIPE THAT IS DRILLED OUT AND PUT STEEL WOOL IN IT FOR SILENCER.using the 22 mag is favorite rifle and thompson contender 223/222...

Go get 'em Sproul! Nothing I despise more than a horn poacher. They are the lowest scumbags out there. Surprised you aren't getting any help from the WCO's with that amount of info on the perpetrators. Just be careful. Some of these jerks are felons who don't really care to go back to the big house.
