Brilliant,absolutely brilliant. The guy was dragging the deer out and it was already tagged. He was caught by a fellow hunter with an illegal deer and was in no position to break off the antlers in an attempt to cover his illegal act.

Antler points were used as opposed to spreads because spreads were subjective at best. Who can tell decidedly in the field a 14 or 13 inch spread? Its easy to count points. A deer in the northeast with three points on one side is in all likelyhood a 2.5 year old deer. Of course there are exceptions, but as a rule, it works pretty well.

The other part of the equation was if the deer reached 2.5 years old, it had a much better chance of reaching 3 or 4 years of age before it was harvested. This in and of itself would increase the buck doe ratio as bucks tend to get smarter as they age and experience a couple of hunting seasons.

Another BB2 tactic of trying to change the point of a post. His curmudgeonry just wont let him read and comprehend any post made by someone he dislikes. The point to telling that story was to show that even after 6 years, some have difficulty understanding the rules and a spread restriction is more difficult to the average hunter than a point count.

That being said, a spread restriction IS far more likely to be beneficial where it is feasible. It just aint feasible statewide in PA yet.

The antlered buck survey showed that around 50% of the 1.5 buck had at least 3 pt. one side. Since there are at least twice as many 1.5 buck as 2.5+ buck that means there are a lot more 1.5 bucks with at least 3 pts. to one side than 2.5 buck.

Wrong again. The antlered buck study showed that only 20% of the 2.5+ buck survived to become 3.5+ buck. That is the same survival rate as for 1.5 buck,prior to ARs.

I believe the point is that the average PA buck hunter has not evolved to a high enough level yet that any amount of scrutiny beyond counting points is possible.
I actually believe that we have too many hunters to attempt it any other way.
When hunter numbers decline more, it may be possible to go to a spread restriction.
