All, I was invited to northern Vermont to go coyote hunting by a coworker. I would be traveling to Long Island NY to work for a few days before traveling to Vermont. Can anyone tell me what kind of pain I'm going to have traveling with my rifle to and through Long Island for a hunting trip? Are there restrictions on type of rifles? Transporting ammo? or What?
I'm not worried as much about Vermont as I am going to Long Island. O... it is the far east side of the island in the rual area(not the city side) where I would be staying (if that changed anything). Twin Rivers is the address I think (I'll have to look when I get to work).
I have never traveled out of state to hunt before so traveling via air with a rifle will be new to me. I'm kind of excited as he says their family's land on the north edge of Vermont is crawling with coyotes.
Anyway. Thanks for any help

I know you cannot transport guns through NYC. Which brings up the question on how do you bring a gun to Long Island from Upstate? We disscussed it at our pistol permit class and the instructor who is a retired county sheriff Lt. said there was no way to legally.
if I were you I would just have a trigger lock on it and in a case and have the ammo in a seperate case with a lock on it or if you can disassamble the gun that would be a choice also.

NEW YORK CITY--A city permit is required for possession and transportation of handguns and long guns. New York State handgun permits are invalid within the city limits; however, New York State residents may transport their licensed handguns unloaded through the city if these are locked in a container and the trip is continuous. Long guns may be kept in the city for only 24 hours while in transit and must be unloaded and stored in a locked container or vehicle trunk for the period.
New York City forbids possession of an "assault weapon," which includes various specified semi automatic rifles and shotguns, or revolving cylinder shotguns. It is unlawful to possess an "ammunition feeding device" capable of holding more than 17 rounds in a handgun, or more than 5 rounds in a rifle or shotgun.
In all cases, the general rule should be observed. The New York State law on illegal possession applies to the City as well.

Non-residents:
A non-resident citizen may possess a rifle or shotgun in New York, as long as it is unloaded while being transported. No person may carry, possess or transport a handgun in or through the state unless he has a valid New York license. New York does not issue licenses to non-residents nor does it recognize licenses issued by other states. (A provision of federal law provides a defense to state or local laws which would prohibit the passage of persons with firearms in interstate travel. If a person is traveling from any place where he may lawfully possess and transport a firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and transport such firearm and the firearm is unloaded and in the trunk. In vehicles without a trunk, the unloaded firearm shall be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. Necessary stops, e.g., gasoline and rest, seem permissible.) A member or coach of an accredited college or university target pistol team may transport a handgun into or through New York to participate in a collegiate, Olympic or target pistol shooting competition provided that the handgun is unloaded and carried in a locked carrying case and the ammunition is carried in a separate locked container. An alien may possess a rifle or shotgun for use while hunting provided he has a valid New York hunting license. "If such (handgun) license is issued to an alien, or to a person not a citizen of and usually a resident in the state, the licensing officer shall state in the license the particular reason for the issuance and the names of the persons certifying to the good character of the applicant." Non-resident target shooters may enter or pass through New York State with handguns for the purposes of any NRA approved competition if the competitor has in his possession a copy of the match program, proof of entry and a pistol license from his state of residence. The handgun must be unloaded and transported in a locked opaque container.

From: NY: NYC to Watertown
problem wouldnt be NY state law,
its NYC regulations you have to be concerned with,
only way in/out of Long island is through NYC,
and NYC requires rifle/shotgun permit,
only exception during transport is when it is on route,
you must be on continuous route from home to destination,
if you live in NJ and are going upstate , cop could question you why your headed to/from LI,
might up to the cops discretion,
i wouldnt chance it.
